Jejima 1,384 Posted May 23, 2010 I have just sent this message to the Bench Sumo mailing list. It is primarily aimed at Bench Sumo players, but others would be welcomed. As not all players (members of the Sumo Forum) are on the Bench Sumo mailing list, I am advertising it here. ****** Hi all, I've created a game for the football World Cup. To play, you will get ten football teams (out of the 32 competing), two of which will be assigned to you, the other eight you get to pick using a method similar to picking for Bench Sumo (or Roto Sumo, or Fantasy Sumo etc). More details about that later. You will then arrange your teams - and go head-to-head with another player - for each round of the real World Cup, following the actual matches that will be taking place, similarish to Bench Sumo. For the later rounds (after the Group Stage matches), there will be extra time and Penalty Shoot-Out rules to decide ties. These rules will be told later to the players taking part. (I have shared the basic ideas with a few people who have given a positive response.) I have shared my basic ideas with a couple of players, who gave very positive responses to my ideas This email is to find out who would like to play (please send me an email ASAP), as it will be limited to 32 players. One to represent each team in the competition. Once I get 32 names, I will draw the teams out of the hat, and you will be assigned that team to be part of your squad along with a 'balancing team', based on the odds given for each team in the competition by three leading bookmakers. For example if you are draw 'Spain' as the team that you are representing (and will play the same matches as Spain will in the World Cup, against the players representing the other teams), you will be balanced with 'North Korea' being assigned to your squad. If you are representing 'New Zealand', you will also get 'Brazil' to balance the books a bit. Anyways, please let me know if you would like to play. First come, first served. If we do not get anywhere near 32 interested players, this game will not be played (Yucky...) As I have spent some time developing it (and I believe I have come up with a good, fun game), I really, really hope we do! All the best, Jejima
Itachi 395 Posted May 23, 2010 This sounds like fun. I would like to play. I could probably get a non-sumofan to play as well if we need more participants to make it work.

Jejima 1,384 Posted May 26, 2010 (edited) I've just sent this email to the Bench Sumo Mailing List. Former players of Bench Sumo especially welcome to join in - as are players of the other sumo games - or forum members in general. ******************************************************************************** ******** Hi all! Okay, I am desperate now (Sign of approval...) We have 24 players ready to play the Bench World Cup - but we need 8 more. Once we have those 8, then players can start selecting their squads. As this is going to be done without automation (back in the days of yore with Bench Sumo), I am hoping that we can start as soon as possible. Therefore, please, please consider joining up for the game. Knowledge of football (or soccer) / the World Cup can be minimal to still play (I am not worthy...) The amount of time required to play will be very little too. I would prefer to play this game with Bench Sumo players and/or players of other sumo games, as I feel we have become friends over the years. It would be more fun for me to take on Jakusotsu (say), than to take on Jakusotsu's good friend, who I don't know. However, if this begging email fails to get any takers (Please play - make me happy!), then I will soon open it up to friends of players, in order to get the required 32 players. Those signed up already are as follows:- Doitsuyama Furanohana Gawasukotto Gusoyama Harinezumi Imumaru Itachi Jakusotsu Jejima Kaiopectate Kameumi Kintamayama Kotononami Maguroyama Metzinowaka Mischashimaru Oshirokita Oskanohana Pitinosato (please let me know a working email address!) Randomitsuki Rannohana Rubensan Saruyama Terarno All the best, Jejima Edited May 26, 2010 by Jejima

Itachi 395 Posted May 26, 2010 Would you consider allowing multiple entries? Some enthusiastic football fans might be willing to field an A side and a B side and that could fill those 8 spots with familiar faces. Hi all!Okay, I am desperate now (Sign of approval...) Those guys there are super-competitive-I'd go fishing over there aggressively, sir.. If you are talking about the Talkies, I advertised there at the same time I advertised here (okay, a minute later in all honesty (Thinking in depth...)) Maeden (Kawika) and Achiyama now included, plus Chabonowaka. . This leaves three openings! If need be, I will twist Frankleebrian's arm to play when I play him tomorrow at pool. But still looking for two more ;-)

Jejima 1,384 Posted May 27, 2010 (edited) Just sent this message to the Bench Sumo Mailing List... Urgent request to Achiyama and XiaoTan - please PM me an email address that I can use for you! Hi all, We seem to probably have 32 players for the game - great! But I think we may need some 'back-up' players just in case, as I haven't got confirmation for a few email addresses yet. Please let me know if you would kindly agree to be a back-up. For all those who signed up, I have created a new mailing list for the game bench_world_cup@yahoogroups.com, and I have sent you all invites using the 'best' email address that I have for you. (Please let me know quickly if you don't receive the invite email, or would prefer a different one to used.) Please accept those invites quickly! Then we can move onto the next stage of this game. All the best, and thank you for playing! Jejima Edited May 27, 2010 by Jejima

I am sorry to respond so late, but you know how busy we were a whole month with the World Cup, and than right away the Nagoya Basho started etc. So, now being between basho I would like to go back to the Football matter. First, I want to thank most of all Jejima for offering the idea and sponsoring the World Cup Sumo game. The rules were not perfect, but I can say that the game was a success. Thanks for your time Jejima, and your dedication. Second, I want to thank all the referees for the job well done. All of you were very respectful to the players you referreed. Some of you were sometimes in limbo about the rules, but you never ceased to ask for a double check by other referees for precision. Thanks for your contribution and dedication as well. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to play the game. It was FUN (Eh?) and success (Dancing of joy...) ! Without a doubt I would like to participate in such games in the future if organized. The next World Cup is in 4 years (2014) in Brazil. But why wait til then. Let's do EURO 2012. The qualifications for it will start this autumn, European countries will be fighting for 24 spots at the Finals in Poland and Ukraine. I think it could be fun. If the interest is too big we can do for example - 2 waves, instead of 1. How many people would be interested to do this game? If there is enough interested, we have plenty of time to discuss the rules of the game, and make it an ALPHA game. WHAT DO YOU THINK, GUYS???
