Asashosakari 19,319 Posted June 21, 2010 In the wake of the gambling scandal major sponsor Nagatani-en has decided to abandon their regular kensho order for Nagoya basho due to the negative societal fallout of the whole brouhaha. Active since the year 2000 and up to now buyers of 200 kensho (= 12 million yen gross) per basho they are by far the biggest individual sponsor, so not only will this be a major loss by itself, but it may also be somewhat of a bellwether for other kensho sponsors. According to the company the door is open to resuming their sponsorship at a later date if circumstances improve.

Peterao 3 Posted June 23, 2010 Household goods maker Runon has also announced it is not purchasing any kensho for Nagoya Basho. Now that it has started, I cannot imagine any company publicly financing an organization linked to a highly public yakuza/gambling scandal.
Raishu 208 Posted June 23, 2010 Now that it has started, I cannot imagine any company publicly financing an organization linked to a highly public yakuza/gambling scandal. It looks like several sponsors think about cancelling their financial relationships with the NSK, but some have stated they won't change anything for now. Fuji Xerox of Fujifilm Holdings Corp. (whose sponsorchip began this year) might cancel their kensho activities, it has been reported. Morinaga Co. (confectionary maker), who sponsors an award which is given at the end of Aki basho, considers to end their financial connections like Fuji Xerox. Two companies (Mc Donalds and Sake manufacturer Ozeki Co.) have announced they won't end their relationships with the NSK. McD has been awarding kensho money since last year, while Ozeki Co. (name taken from the Ozumo Rank btw) has been a long term sponsor since 1958. Small note: Nagatanien shares rose 7 yen to 877 yen at the 3 p.m. close on the Tokyo Stock Exchange yesterday. Raishu 208 Posted June 23, 2010 That article was from a couple days ago. In Japan, that's plenty of time to go from"total support" to "totally throw you under a bus" You are right. But that's all I could find using common searching tools. There haven't been any further 'world-changing' revelations since the 21st, so I assume the companies' intentions won't have changed by now. Or are there any new articles concering the NSK and its sponsorship deals? It would be nice to have red-hot news, if there are any.
Peterao 3 Posted June 28, 2010 (edited) Add Asahi Seimei (Asahi Mutual Life Insurance Company) to the list of companies pulling out their Nagoya kensho. EDIT: They are pulling out their advertising, not kensho. Their company name had been appearing on the back of the yobidashi's kimono. Peterao 3 Posted June 30, 2010 Snack maker Natori is also pulling their name off of the yobidashi's backs. Will we finally see some clean, unsullied kimono in Nagoya?
Jonosuke 28 Posted June 30, 2010 Natori has such a long history with Ozumo that it's hard to fathom. Way back when things were so tough that yobidashi could not even buy their own attire, they helped them out free. Old time yobidashi used to wear their name for free long after to show their appreciation.
Peterao 3 Posted June 30, 2010 After a long lull, Fuji Xerox is the next company to join the parade of companies pulling their kensho support for Nagoya Basho.
Jakusotsu 5,969 Posted June 30, 2010 Well, aren't they quick to seize the opportunity to "gracefully" pull out of this fruitless sponsorships? Some commission should be paid to Kotomitsuki...
Kotoviki 16 Posted June 30, 2010 The companies forget that there are still plenty people who are watching sumo who would support them! Why not stay and support the people still competing?
Jonosuke 28 Posted June 30, 2010 The companies forget that there are still plenty people who are watching sumo who would support them! Why not stay and support the people still competing? Some companies stuck with Tiger Woods and others, well, they did not want the association. It's not really a matter of supporting or not supporting. That's what sponsorship is all about. Peterao 3 Posted July 1, 2010 And Kyushin Pharmaceuticals becomes the next company to take their name off of the yobidashi's backs. (I had no idea that so many companies were using yobidashi as an advertising medium. They must have been changing clothes every hour...)

Jonosuke 28 Posted July 1, 2010 Despite NHK blurs out Kensho parade, most know who Kensho sponsors are as Nagatani-en or McDonalds is hard to miss. How many TV stations charge only 60,000 Yen for a spot commercial? Well if NHK decides not to air the broadcast, I have a feeling quite a few other companies may pull out so now even less money to Makuuchi rikishi to gamble on so it may be all good thing as those monies rarely go to non-sekitori so there is no impact to them except perhaps by taken along by the winning rikishi to have a few night outs. Kotoviki 16 Posted July 1, 2010 as those monies rarely go to non-sekitori so there is no impact to them except perhaps by taken along by the winning rikishi to have a few night outs. fwiw Roho used to give all his kensho to his tsukebito (to his main tsukebito Kihakuriki) I don't know about others... but it is good to know at least some of the money was being used wisely!! (You are going off-topic...)

But somewhere along the line I missed IHI Corp. also announcing that they were pulling their kensho from the Nagoya basho. hmm I should take this chance to ask them for a raise since I teach English for them. I could say "since you are not supporting sumo you must have some extra cash lying around...."
Peterao 3 Posted July 8, 2010 Kotooshu will also be crying in his sake this basho, as Bulgaria yogurt has also announced their plans to pull their kensho support from Nagoya Basho. The only company to outwardly announce their support for the Nagoya Basho remains the KY McDonalds Holding company, probably to avoid retribution from all of the gangsters that come in to their restaurants for a late night cup of coffee after their "work" has finished. More power to them, for not caving in to some uber-morality nonsense and blowing in the wind. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they are an American company, and not with that excellent theory of yours.. McDonald's, I will now go to my neighborhood branch and eat there heartily though I haven't entered their premises for a while, and will post a picture here with the sign "Eat this, NHK!". I suggest all those that think NHK suck all over the world do the same! Mainstream Edited July 8, 2010 by Kintamayama
