Kotoviki 16 Posted July 8, 2010 Kotooshu will also be crying in his sake this basho, as Bulgaria yogurt has also announced their plans to pull their kensho support from Nagoya Basho. The only company to outwardly announce their support for the Nagoya Basho remains the KY McDonalds Holding company, probably to avoid retribution from all of the gangsters that come in to their restaurants for a late night cup of coffee after their "work" has finished. More power to them, for not caving in to some uber-morality nonsense and blowing in the wind. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they are an American company, and not with that excellent theory of yours.. McDonald's, I will now go to my neighborhood branch and eat there heartily though I haven't entered their premises for a while, and will post a picture here with the sign "Eat this, NHK!". I suggest all those that think NHK suck all over the world do the same! Mainstream I will do this!!! I will attach it to my complaint to NHK for sure. Along with the copies of letters my 5th & 6th graders wrote to Baruto and Yamamotoyama telling them how sad they are they can not watch them on tv during the basho! Not like I need the excuse as a frequent McDonald's goer (it's the little tastes of home that keep ya going), but I'll take this as a sign to increase from my once a week average trip to McDs to maybe three or four times a week? I'll change from Kaiho to YMY in no time B-)

Kintamayama 45,111 Posted July 8, 2010 Mac are buying kenshos to the sweet tune of 6 million yen. They only started buying kenshos last March. "We're behind the sumo world always and hope to enliven it!!" said the nice guy from McDonalds. I'm going again for dinner.
Asashosakari 19,319 Posted July 8, 2010 (edited) New-S Securities, a fund that specializes in stocks from emerging markets (I think) has announced they will be offering kensho for the first time at Nagoya; the exact number of sponsored banners was not announced. Incidentally, as for the companies who decided to drop their sponsorship of the yobidashi garments, I hope the Kyokai takes some pride in the newly ad-free clothing and tells those companies to shove it if they want to restart their patronage in the future. Let them pay the going rate via kensho like everybody else. Edited July 8, 2010 by Asashosakari

AFAIK, it's the yobidashi who have always objected to being used as walking billboards -- apart from the time after the war when they were glad to get any gear at all. Incidentally, I always thought that story of the yobidashi continuing to wear the advertising of a company that was no longer sponsoring them, out of gratitude, was an urban myth. Is there really a reliable source for it? (Just asking, I'd really like to know) Orion

They will i$$ue 8000 of them daily at the APG (Aichi prefectural gym) and bringing one of these to a McDonald's outlet gives you a free coffee. "I am truly thankful for their $upport in these difficult time$!," said Ni$honoseki Oyakata. I'm going for another round to my local one. Anyone coming with? And where are those pictures?? There used to be handouts of fans daily at previous bashos in Nagoya (or at least when I used to go to Nagoya). These were uchiwa type (non-folding) in the general shape of a gunbai, one side red, the other yellow, but iI don't remember who sponsored those. You really need some sort of cooling apparatus in Nagoya! Does anyone else remember these?

And where are those pictures?? the fans are cute, I picked up 20 for me and my friends today. They are really cheap as opposed to the ones that Barbara is talking about that they gave away until last year sponsored by the takkyubin company. I went to get my free coffee today. I took pictures of the employees giving them out and thanked them for supporting sumo! :-) McDonald's girl handing out fans. Ganbare Sumo in the dohyo Bring the small part at the bottom and get a free hot or iced coffee until August 31 at any McD's in Japan

The sponsor for the red & yellow gunbai-shaped fans was Seino, a Chubu area transport company (kangaroo logo was printed on the fans IIRC). I still see some being used in the crowd, but not sure if they are holdovers from last year, or still being handed out currently.

I still see some being used in the crowd, but not sure if they are holdovers from last year, or still being handed out currently. Most of them are people who still have them from last year. Me and everyone else got at least 30 or 40 last year so their are plenty around. I have 10 in my car still. One or more ochaya handed them out to some people I saw one or two days but it was near the beginning. Since they weren't giving them out at the basho I figured an ochaya had some left overs. The McDonald's fan is ok but it is nothing compared to the gunbai fans so many are still using those. I think Mc D's put it together so quickly that they couldn't arrange more quality than they got. Jonosuke 28 Posted July 19, 2010 Though I beg to differ, some considers McDonalds and Quality to be synonymous. But isn't their Fan fan more or less a glorified coupon for a cup of free coffee. But at least I got handed to them as this one is not really driven by their business interest alone. If they were to hand out 8,000 fans, don't they want to do it when whole lot of TV viewers are watching? It's rather impressive, it the viewers can see thousands of people waving their rad fan at the same time while watching a mono-ii replay, you really cannot avoid seeing them. Personally for promotional purpose, the Kyokai should give away better stuff than those clearfiles as they are not that visible after you got them. You put in your desk or briefcase and you forget about them. Why not get a Bobblehead doll like MLB does? Kids really love them. Not even sure how many Ichiro or Matsui Bobbleheads I had to get them .... But can you imagin having a Takamisakari Bobblearm doll? It will be pretty wicked. No doubt it will be an amazing hit on Yahoo Auction.

Asashosakari 19,319 Posted August 13, 2010 It looks like several sponsors think about cancelling their financial relationships with the NSK, but some have stated they won't change anything for now. ...Morinaga Co. (confectionary maker), who sponsors an award which is given at the end of Aki basho, considers to end their financial connections like Fuji Xerox. At last, a decision: The company's Morinaga-sho, a daily kensho given to the most anticipated bout as voted on by the Kokugikan audience, will be presented at Aki basho after all. A company representative commented, "Our company has a long-standing association with the NSK, and while it may be just a small gesture, we want to do our part to raise the sumo spirits", citing the Kyokai's nascent reform efforts as the basis for their decision, but also confirmed that further scandals may still result in a decision change in the future. Yubinhaad 11,683 Posted August 24, 2010 And some more good news: Kibun Foods, Inc. plans to resume advertising on yobidashi billboards for the Aki basho. Two others - Sugiyo, Co. and Suzuhiro, Co. - may do the same. "We can see the JSA's efforts to reform the present situation." - Kibun Foods PR man. "We want to support wrestlers who are hanging in there and the entire sumo world." - Suzuhiro PR man. Not everyone is willing to jump aboard quite so quickly, however: "We want to consider the matter after watching JSA's measures to prevent similar scandals from occurring again." Asahi Mutual Life Insurance, Co's cautious PR man.
Kintamayama 45,111 Posted September 1, 2010 Add Asahi Seimei (Asahi Mutual Life Insurance Company) to the list of companies pulling out their Nagoya kensho.EDIT: They are pulling out their advertising, not kensho. Their company name had been appearing on the back of the yobidashi's kimono. They will be back on the backs for Aki. "With the Kyokai's declaration that they are severing all their ties with the underworld they have made concrete decisions to avoid a relapse," they said. Kintamayama 45,111 Posted September 6, 2010 (edited) Nagatanien yes more. They are back for Aki (200 kensho over 15 days, happy days are potentially back for Takamisakari..), as are all seven companies who used to advertise on the yobidashi's kimono. "We are seeing the necessary reforms blah blah blah..," said Nagatanien. Edited September 6, 2010 by Kintamayama
