Scandal fallout

Recommended Posts

Today one gyoji told me that some shimpan wanted to have him thrown out but technically they couldn't so....

Possibly stupid question: If they can't, who can? Surely there has to be somebody who can deal with disruptive audience members, at the very least someone who's part of the arena management. (Maybe you should have insinuated that he was bragging about his mob connections...)

and speaking of drunks... the one who gets the award (pics will be posted on my facebook when I can) is the guy today who ended up being carried out on a stretcher during the Bushuyama bout. I remember only the drunk incident and nothing about sumo.

The guy was not drunk- he had a heart attack and died-see my other report..

That being the case, I respectfully ask you take those pictures off of your Facebook.

I just read your report but am not checking other news during the basho. He was indeed drunk before his heart attack. The drinking probably caused the heart attack. No one person (except Baruto) should drink that much alcohol at one time. I'm sorry that this happened but then what was he thinking? He drank sake and beer and ate no food all day. Every time he got up to go to the bathroom he tripped all over the people in the tamari in front of his box. I suppose he may not have know he had a weak heart?? And people who do often do not give up on things like smoking and drinking.. that is true everywhere I guess. Nobody wanted to sit with him because he was drunk. Since he had a whole box to himself with four obentos and such he invited two people he seemed to know at different times around 3 (because it was during juryo) that came to say hello to sit with him but neither stayed nor came back... I think they didn't want to sit with him in his drunken state.

The fact that he had a heart attack makes all that drinking even sadder!!! Shouldn't the ochaya be at some fault for serving him?

The new laws in Japan for drunk driving say that if you are caught drunk driving the person serving you alcohol is at fault too. So the bar or restaurant or even a private citizen who lets you leave drunk may have to pay the heavy fines too. Ok he wasn't driving but still..... should their be laws against serving drunks (or are there in Japan?)

well don't worry Peterao... I haven't even taken the 4000 pictures off the memory card yet so I don't need to remove them from anywhere yet.

As I said above I didn't know he just died after he left the gym.. it was the first I heard, so even I'm not stupid enough to post the pictures.

I am also disappointed that he drank himself into that heart attack. I think stopping alcohol sales in sumo venues would be a better thing than stopping NHK tv coverage.

While this may be the worst that has happened... every time I'm at sumo someone is drunk, to some capacity... leaving in an ambulance or passed out in a box sleeping, vomiting all over themselves, making a disturbance, arguing with police... I seem to remember Nagoya is the worst because it is also very hot and alcohol affects you differently (I'm told..)

Once a guy fell in the Kokugikan- not drunk, just stumbled and hit his head. He almost bled to death cause nobody was "in charge" to do anything or "had to ask" his direct boss...one of the bouncer ladies came and handed over some tissues........(that is why everybody should carry a first aid kit with him all the time...you might be the only one who is able to decide to help. Had not even tissues with me. :-S )

It was Izutsu from the Shinpan-seat to yell at the Yobis to help the poor fella.

If anybody, then it is the Shinpan, at least they have enough authority and do not have to ask someone before deciding, but they are kinda "fixated" and have to remain sitting there.

Honestly I'm not surprised by the drunks. When I got there at 8am they asked me how many beers I wanted after they insisted on escorting me to my seat so they could add extra to the price of the drinks as I soon discovered... they were surprised when I wanted koohii instead.

Heart failure, and I don't mean the empty seats:

Morbid choice of a number, it turns out...

(Conspiracy alert) So, with sales down even more than normal, is it possible that they were plying this obviously-willing gentlemen with more drinks than he should have been having? If they were supplying him with drinks long beyond the point where a bartender would have pulled the plug, is there a case to be made by the survivors that the Kyokai is partially responsible for his death?

If there's any impropriety to be found in this gentleman's death (of course, Takashi Saito's death was originally ruled an accident, and the true extent of his injuries would never have been revealed without further followup against the Kyokai's initial wishes), then that's proof positive that tempriji should be available at all times during a honbasho.

How would the tempriji's presence have made any difference whatsoever? Are you suggesting he should be walking the aisles checking on drinking in the crowd? If so can you say the last one that did so.

How would the tempriji's presence have made any difference whatsoever?

Mainly for PR purposes. A company president is always on hand for the most important events of the company, such as the annual stockholders meeting, or the biggest trade show of the year. It lets people know that someone is in charge, and gives them a feeling of security. When Steve Jobs is not at MacWorld, it is big news, none of which is good for Apple.

Honbasho are the biggest events of the year. If everything goes well, no problem. If something goes wrong, people are going to want a comment from the man in charge. Ozumo needs all the positive press they can muster, but now we're hearing about how the man in charge is not on hand to deal with problems at the biggest event that Ozumo has.

Ozumo can negotiate with other cities for handling police enforcement any of the other 275 non-Hon basho days of the year. Tempriji needs to be where the action is now.

Has it been decided whether the 0-0-15 rikishi will fall down the banzuke for Aki? I remember there was some suggestion they might keep their rank.

Another jungyo cancellation, this time the Tagawa basho that was to be held November 6th December 5th. Reason given: "(Ozumo) is not a good fit for the creation of a happy town."

A picture of Takanohana sealing the deal for this jungyo in happier times can be found within the PDF file at http://bit.ly/auReYv

I don't know, my personal opinion is that cancelling all the jungyo just punishes the local fans especially the ones who can't get to a hon basho. And children who often can only go to jungyo!

Many rikishi do not enjoy the long jungyo tours anyway, especially the busier ones doing tsukebito and stuff as well. Many complain that while it is nice for the fans it is exhausting to go from place to place on a bus each night.

So maybe for some of them this will be good but sorry for the real fans!!!!

It's really ashamed! Tagawa basho should be a special event for the former oozeki Takanohana I and Futagoyama oyakata. In this town, one's of the greatest supporter of the great man owned a chanko-nabe restaurant, the only one in Japan authorized to be called "Takanohana chanko".

In the article of the Mainichi shinbun, it noticed that an other Tagawa basho should be take place in the next years.

The whole winter jungyo is canceled. "I feel responsible," said Hanaregoma jungyo chief. All sponsors have refused to back them.

It's an unprecedent case I suppose?

Well, about 5 years ago the winter jungyo was canceled altogether because of "low interest in Sumo at that time".

The reason for this is that Kintamayama and Kotoviki failed to follow through on their promise to post of a picture of them eating at McDonalds. "If we would have seen proof that people were actually eating at Mickey D's because of their support of sumo, then we may have had the strength to carry on for the real sumo fans." said Mr. Mumei.

I am preparing an album, not some dumb picture. We shall rise from the ashes and challenge NHK.

Probably better that they cancel the whole jungyo at once, as each individual cancellation would have ended up being a separate story anyway. Still, it is strange to see all of the winter jungyo cancelled before all of the ones before them.
