Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 8, 2010 I have cancelled my TVJapan feed and will not resume it until NHK announces that it will resume coverage of the bashos. May I suggest that other forum members do the same thing. It is one way to send a message. Well done- I wish I could subscribe just to unsubscribe, but I don't have a dish. Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 8, 2010 If NHK aren't paying for the rights, why do they have any say over what other broadcasters can do? Or are they just stating NSK rules? Because everyone else uses their feed. NHK has the right but not the exclusive right. If other networks want to show Ozumo, live or on delay basis they can and they do for one day tournament. They don't want to pay for live coverage right for basho. What if another station wishes to do the feed as well, asking NHK politely to go jump in the lake? Is it possible, or does Big Brother NHK have that exclusive right for eternity as well?

You stated you spent your formative years in Japan, which means you likely may know or even have watched commercial networks covering Ozumo, at least three channels did, Nihon TV, TBS, what is now Asahi as well but don't remember Fuji did but I don't think they showed it. As I keep pointing out, if any other TV station, including WOWOW or Skyper wants to cover Ozumo live, they can. They only have to pay a right like NHK does to Ozumo. The subscriber basis channles won't do it because there is not enough demand and commercial networks don't because they cannot attract enough sponsors. Regarding the cell phone video, I understand it's also NHK feed as well. I'd doubt they would do it if NHK decided not to do their digest program.

TBS for sure, but mostly NHK.
Babaryutaikai 1 Posted July 8, 2010 Just to chime in, I believe Jonosuke is correct in that it is NHK that provides the cell phone video. It's listed as TV, one to access the TV utility on the keitai and the regular NHK channel loads with the sumo bouts. Not BS, of course - the General NHK channel. It's not a streeam, it's an actual broadcast. AND it's free on the keitai, at least for Docomo.
Peterao 3 Posted July 8, 2010 The NHK president cited two factors in naking the decision to cancel the Nagoya Basho broadcast: 1. The "insurmountable wall" between the public's common sense and the Kyokai's common sense. 2. Overwhelming number of comments against broadcast. He also said that, when he met with the riji on the 6th to inform them of the decision, no one objected. If I were to engage in conspiracy theories, I would say that they deliberately did this, and other forms of self pennance, to turn public opinion in their favor so that they would be forgiven, and everything could eventually return to normal without ever actually changing anything. Asashosakari 19,306 Posted July 8, 2010 No, it's a Kyokai feed. The article I used as the basis for this post the other day said so as well, though admittedly that was also an Asahi article IIRC.

Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 10, 2010 More fallout from that great decision in the sky by the NHK luminaries - video replays will be available only for Juryo and on. All bouts before that will have the shinpan rely on their excellent young eyes.
Peterao 3 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) Another casuality: the interviews with rikishi who defeat ozeki and yokozuna will not take place this basho. No decision yet on the yusho interviews. Edited July 10, 2010 by Peterao
Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 10, 2010 Another casuality: the interviews with rikishi who defeat ozeki and yokozuna will not take place this basho. No decision yet on the yusho interviews. See? THIS I can live without-they are always so uncomfortable to watch. It always boils down to a rikishi breathing heavily, nodding, looking like a rabbit caught in a headlight, and making a lot of hissing sounds, culminating in the inevitable mother of all hisses-"Gambarimassssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss". Triple everything I wrote if it's a European foreign rikishi.

All bouts before that will have the shinpan rely on their excellent young eyes. Not that it is any help in the lower divisions except after the fact. In Sandame in Osaka there were so many mistakes and no matter how loud the audience screamed.. well anyway.... different gyoji told me later in the day that they checked the video and sure enough they had made a mistake but they won't reverse their decisions. Unfair!

But I'd like to see the Emperor's Cup delivered in a Louis Vuitton case.

FIFA stubbornly refuses to use replays, while Sumo, regarded as an ancient traditional sport, has been using it since 1969. The only thing NHK figures is they are holier than thou, and everything else stems from there.
ilovesumo 12 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) But I'd like to see the Emperor's Cup delivered in a Louis Vuitton case. If that ever happens, I will be seen NO MORE... I dunno how many people I told how this traditionalist "sport" Sumo is working with video and Shinpan's final decision for decades.... FIFA, you're kinda behind........ nonews 0 Posted July 11, 2010 watching world cup documentary? thats like watching clothes in the dryer. it's gonna end 0-0 like most of their crappy games. I would rather watch a documentary on skipping rocks across the water.

I almost missed it because the highlights, minus warm-up, were so devoid of substance that I found my attention wandering. Today, Shonichi, I did not get my fix, and I am already out of synch. What's going to happen tomorrow at the office when I get a travelog like I saw 30 seconds of today before I turned off the TV? Orion at bored, bored, bored -- this is NOT a hon-basho!
