Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 11, 2010 (edited) Another casuality: the interviews with rikishi who defeat ozeki and yokozuna will not take place this basho. No decision yet on the yusho interviews. Despite what I reported here, they did indeed interview Tochiozan for the Digest broadcast after his after over Harumafuji today. Tochiouzan himself was caught by surprise by the interview. As he came backstage, he was whisked away for the interview. "Truth be told, I didn't think they would call for me..", he said. The other rikishi were trying to get the hang of the non-broadcast. They had the TV hooked to the Kyokai feed, which is static and has no replays. Hakuhou's tsukebito was seen taking video shots of his match via his mobile phone. "With no TV broadcast, my sumo is kind of indifferent..", said a veteran Makuuchi rikishi. Edited July 11, 2010 by Kintamayama
sekihiryu 51 Posted July 12, 2010 I must say this no live coverage basho but with a 30 min sumo digest at 6:30pm is bloody brilliant! Perfect time to to watch a highlights show or record it and watch it later in the evening. The old digest was a 1:30 am or 4am. Ludicrous times. NHK - Please keep this new Digest time slot! ilovesumo 12 Posted July 12, 2010 You forget about the poor guys who work in the city and gotta go home by train or gotta go drinking. For those who record it- any time early is fine, but those who don't... gotta buy a recorder, hum?
Jonosuke 28 Posted July 12, 2010 I haven't watched the digest yet but saw a Hakuho bout in NHK 7 News and it appeared at least for Makuuchi NHK has a regular number of cameras around and Kariya announcer was doing almost as if it was like a regular live play-by-play. Of course for the digest, he was in NHK studio in Shibuya like Doreen and company for the broadcast. Anyway the place looked pretty empty today.
Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 12, 2010 4 monoiis in Jonidan-three sashi-chigais. "Since we have no video replay, we are looking at the bouts extra carefully, "said Irumagawa the judge.

As for the digest, who cares? I watched half the digest yesterday, didn't bother to turn it on today. I'll read about it in tomorrow's papers. It's the lack of NHK coverage that is killing my interest -- after well over 30 years of avid following. Still debating whether to go for just the last day.... Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 12, 2010 I pray it is successful enough to merit it. Ratings yesterday were around 13%, if I'm not mistaken.
shumitto 418 Posted July 12, 2010 (edited) I care! and I am sure the vast majority of forum members especially those abroad without any means to watch would dearly love the chance to watch the 30 min Digest do to. Outside Japan, on NHK premium at least, the digest is kept almost the same (barring the opening which is a different one and now it is wide screen I think) at the same time than usual and it is INDEED very important unless one has 2 hours to spend on sumo at the time it is broadcast. The digest is not ideal, but very useful. Edited July 12, 2010 by shumitto

Babaryutaikai 1 Posted July 12, 2010 The digest is not ideal, but very useful. i heard they were only showing the bouts in a 35 minutes show on jstv in europe..... That's what we have in the States, too, on JapanTV. Just about a half hour with all the Makunouchi bouts, but none of the preliminary stuff, except for Takamisakari's machinations last night. Tamaikazuchi 4 Posted July 13, 2010 As for the digest, who cares? I watched half the digest yesterday, didn't bother to turn it on today. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm glad it's there, but being happy about the recap is akin to being happy that gas prices dropped 10 cents to 4.50 a gallon.

Peterao 3 Posted July 13, 2010 I'm interested to know where the manga came from. I can see that it came from teh Yomiuri site, but is it from a weekly/monthly manga publication or is it produced by Yomiuri?I also like how shocked the child and woman are That was the only illustration from a children's article on the Yomiuri website. I don't think there's an entire manga devoted to gambling rikishi yet... (Right Panel) Boy: Trouble yet again in Ozumo! Man: Beginning with Ozeki Kotomitsuki, we found that lots of rikishi were engaged in baseball gambling! Woman: There were a lot of rikishi that weren't allowed to take part in Nagoya Basho. (Left Top Panel) Man: They bet lots of money on the pro baseball teams that they thought would win or lose. Boy: It seems that there were even gamblers among the oyakata that are supposed to be leading these rikishi! (Left Bottom Panel) Boy: It seems that NHK has stopped their live coverage of the Nagoya basho. Man: The basho is going on, but the fans are being saddened. The smiling rikishi looks a bit like Kotonowaka to me. Scoop?
nonews 0 Posted July 13, 2010 okay nhk now you have gone and done it. interfering in sumo operations by blackmailing the kyoki is one thing but interfering in my married life is going to far. my wife wondered why she can't watch her shows and kayo hall. when I told her the channel was blocked in protest of the dumbo decision to not televise sumo I lost the mini war. I was forced to unblock the nhk but I won't watch it and I still WILL NOT PAY the tv tax nhk demands for their worthless broadcasts. a curse on their livers goes out to nhk execs who don't care what the majority of viewers want. I would put the curse on their hearts but it's a known fact they don't have any.
Peterao 3 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Your wife will just pay the bill behind your back with your money. Face it, you can't win, so just chill out and enjoy the early digest! And you have a lot of chutzpah to claim a majority when all objective data says otherwise... Edited July 13, 2010 by Peterao
Umigame 82 Posted July 13, 2010 Man: The basho is going on, but the fans are being saddened. "The fans are being saddened" is a mistranslation that drastically changes the meaning of this comic. "Fan no me wa kibishiku natte iru yo" means the fans are getting more critical / they are watching with scrutiny. The father is preaching this to the boy with his index finger raised. Most of us foreign sumo fanatics are "sad" about NHK not broadcasting. But the majority opinion of Japan's general public is not "sadness" -- they voted to cancel the broadcast. Kotoviki 16 Posted July 13, 2010 should I add that every person I talked to in the Nagoya gym talks about how mad they are at NHK? They call them all sorts of names and are really angry. I talked to at least 75 people... all reflecting the same thing, they didn't complain to NHK to SHOW sumo because they like me assumed it would never be cancelled. The people here are not 100% of the population but I'm just saying....
