Asojima 2,874 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) Since NHK is not broadcasting the Nagoya basho, many may be joining us in watching the NSK video stream which will be the only live coverage of the matches. NSK provides a single camera live coverage via the internet. The image quality is not as good as that provided by NHK, but it is better than nothing. There is no commentary. Audio is limited to an open microphone at the venue. In the past, coverage normally has started at about 2:30 PM Japan standard time with the Juryo dohyo-iri and continued through the final makuuchi bout. The start time has been a bit arbitrary. It sometimes starts earlier and includes many of the makushita matches. Viewing the stream requires the installation of a recent version of the Microsoft Windows Media Player (WMP) or a very close equivalent. (I use both versions 10 and 11 of WMP.) A dial-up connection does not provide enough speed to sustain a stream connection. The easiest way to get to the stream is to click on the (Live Stream) pick at the top of the Sumoforum display. Another way is to go directly to the URL mms://bpsw00.goo.ne.jp/sumolive . Attempts to access the link before the camera is activated will result in an error message to the effect that you are attempting to access an invalid link. Keep trying every few minutes. It will eventually catch. Do not be surprised if the initial connect has no audio or a solid audio tone. Sound is normally fully activated at about the time of the Juryo dohyo-iri, but may come earlier. The initial camera angles may be a bit bewildering (ceiling, empty seats, long shots, extreme closeups). During the Juryo matches, coverage settles down to serious coverage of the dohyo action. The above is based on what we have seen in the past. Since the stream will be the only live coverage of the action this basho, the NSK may change things a bit and also clean up the coverage a bit. There are a limited number of "viewing slots" available for the coverage. If you do not get in early, the slots may all be taken up, and you will have to wait for someone to drop out. Once you get logged in to the coverage, do not disconnect. You may not be able to get back in. There was an announcement that the NSK will make more slots available for this basho to accomodate additional viewers, but the demand will be very high for this basho, and the slots will probably be used up very early. This thread can be used to alert members when the link first becomes active. I suggest it be used only for posts related to the activation/quality of the link. Use another thread for comments on the action. NOTE: For Nagoya, there have been some major changes in the stream coverage, including new URL's. See the posts below for details. kappa-joe 0 Posted July 10, 2010 (edited) Thank you for the useful post. For those with non-Windows systems, I recommend the free and excellent VLC (VideoLAN Conduit), which also plays the mms streams quite effectively, and is available for nearly every operating system in the world: http://www.videolan.org Connecting is as simple as with WMP; select "Open Network", enter "mms://bpsw00.goo.ne.jp/sumolive" as the URL and hit return. sekihiryu 51 Posted July 11, 2010 Hmm, wonder how long before only users in Japan can access this and all outside of Japan ISP's get blocked. Shame a proper online video streaming service couldnt have the rights to show it.
Asashosakari 19,306 Posted July 11, 2010 (edited) Stream's up at 15:00 JST. New location: http://mfile.akamai.com/101599/live/reflec...6762∝=a Address may not be permanent (I have no idea); when in doubt, go to http://sumo.goo.ne.jp/hon_basho/torikumi/e...shin/eizo2.html and click on the link there. Edit: Oh yeah, bitrate increased from 73 kbit to 121 kbit. Looks good! Edited July 11, 2010 by Asashosakari

ilovesumo 12 Posted July 11, 2010 (edited) Thanks, Thought the server was already full. (Sigh...) Real good quality. - the good thing in all the bad.... I just noticed the Yobi on the left wears clothes, made of the same pattern of cloth like the yukata I am wearing now - light blue with white little bunnies and "terao" on it. :-( Edited July 11, 2010 by ilovesumo
Asojima 2,874 Posted July 11, 2010 Day 1 - The first Juryo match was posted on the NSK site at about 15:12 JST, but no stream activation has been noted here in USA. This is not in line with previous coverage. Has any coverage showed up in Japan yet?

Kintamayama 45,086 Posted July 11, 2010 Apology by Temprij now-crowd is shouting stuff, pro and con. Sorry, sorry, sorry, etc, says TR. And sorry again. A long apology. Crowd appears to be agitated. Bowing to all sides amid cheers (or jeers). End.

Bowing to all sides amid cheers (or jeers). End. Maybe the Digest broadcast will shed some more light on the reaction. I'm not watching the feed, but I remember the sound being very tiny and metallic a few basho back when I did watch. I will say that anyone making negative chants shouldn't be spending their money on a ticket to watch this in the first place... (On a totally different note, I wonder if the incidence of henka will be significantly less this basho?) Edited July 11, 2010 by Peterao

No, the tiny ( did you mean tinny?) and metallic sound is the sound of the NHK bigwigs' collective brains trying to think. The sound and the picture on the stream is pretty darn good, thank you very much. You won't find out, since I do expect nothing less than a total ignoring of it from you, sir. Asojima 2,874 Posted July 11, 2010 Actually, I've already announced that I'm being a hypocrite and watching the first digest show. Would like to see the apology and crowd reaction for myself. Yes, but I meant watching it live. Would it be a serious imposition if I requested that you resume your discussions in one of the old threads and leave this one to those who are attempting to make some sense out of the new streaming links? Many, Many thanks to those posting the links for the broadcast. I came here hoping to find information, and sure enough there was a lot of it. Regarding the VLC player, I have Windows OS and still use VLC, as I believe it is the best player of the two. The VLC player is super! Itchygao

On one of my systems, I had to reset file type .asx to run WMP vice VLC. Go to file options / file types in the Control Panel, find .asx in the file types list and change it permanently to WMP. This allows the above URL's to work in WMP if you want them to.
