Was a fan as well, and he was one of those who pulled me into Sumo, caused a deeper interest. I was a teen back then, and sure, people change a lot.

When this interest was deep enough, he lost it in my eyes and other Rikishi, as well as Sumo as a whole institution, it's history etc. caught me.

Dunno if I will really miss him, but he was almost always there and now he won't. Banzuke-gaps will be filled again...

This whole scandal is very bad for Sumo, but kicking people out doesn't solve anything.

At least the attention might save him and his family from "disappearing"...

Interesting occurrence at the rikishikai (meeting of all sekitori) today- the rikishi, led by KaioU decided that if ex-Kotomitsuki wants to have a danpatsushiki retirement ceremony at the KKan, they will "cooperate". "He made it to Ozeki so he deserves the accolades," people were saying. "I can't say anything, but let's not forget that this whole scandal started from his behavior," said Hanaregoma rijicho who was present at the meeting. Sadogatake beya has no plans for a danpatsushiki, sources say. Kotomitsuki himself is living in Tokyo and in his home town alternately and has no plans for the future at the moment. He did however send a letter of apology to his koenkai today at their "breaking up meeting" saying it was his fault entirely. "I will be reflecting on my immaturity in this matter deeply, and will try to put the maturity I gained in the sumo world to good use," he wrote, getting applause from the 400 members present. "11 years is a long time. I am not in contact with him at present but if we meet, I'd like to look him in the face and tell him to gambarize, " said Koenkai head Mr. Okada.

Yokozuna Hakuhou voiced the rikishi's protest that even though the Kyokai promised a light punishment for those who came forth with an admission of guilt, they kicked Kotomitsuki out . (Perhaps he came fifth)

I wonder if Kotomitsuki had been more forthright (fifthright?) to the Kyokai about the depths of his gambling issues that maybe his punishment would not have been as drastic as expulsion. Maybe but probably not since they needed a scapegoat to chop and he was the biggest tree in the forest.

Applause to Hakuko & Kaio for standing up for Kotomitsuki in front of the rikishikai. I feel the general public has sympathy for Kotomitsuki and that he got caught in a no-win situation but did the right thing by not knuckling under to the extortion demands that came his way. He was not one of my more favorite wrestlers but I always respected his determination and remember when he finally qualified for Ozeki status. If I were still in Tokyo I would buy a ticket for his danpatsushiki, either at the Kokugaikan or at a "private" ceremony.

As for Hanaregoma's comments: The "Scandal" did not start with Kotomitsuki; he was the catalyst that brought this issue to light. The bigger "Scandal" might be if the Kyokai/Rijikai fail to enact serious reforms to sumo.

If this happens, it would be the first time a dismissed rikishi has a danpatsushiki at the KKaמ, which is why I personally highly doubt this will occur.

He's not coming back. So perhaps he should form another Sumo Bond, along with Asashoryu, Wakanoho, Roho, Hakurozan, etc.. Quite competitive I think. Just a thought...
