Hokutoriki had his chimes rung at the tachiai with Takamisakari. Took him a while to recover, but didn't look seriously damaged.

The only tachiai I missed in my recordings (of course..)-and this happens. To me it looked rather serious, as it looked like he was throwing up in the hanamichi- concussion?

He looked pretty stable on his walk to the dressing room after coming off the hanamichi.

You're watching NHK so you have a much better perspective than me, but watching this it looks bad-he seems to vomit at around 1:23, and two service people come running to clean it up with plastic bags, or maybe not..

Yeah. He was still in a fog bank when he started up the hanamichi.

I love Takamisakari, such an energiser bunny.....he cleaned Hokoturiki's clock good!

He wasn't exactly walking in the sunshine, but then, he seldom is. (Sigh...)

Toyonoshima was handed his first loss of the basho at the hands of Shironoryu.

A monoii was called. On the video replays it looked like Shironoyu's arm clearly hit the dirt first.

Yet after the mono-ii, Shironoryu was named the winner. WTF?

Takanohana-oyakata gave no explanation on the mic -- he just said they decided in favor of Shironoryu.

Anyone else surprised at this? Do they not consult the video for non-makuuchi bouts?

I found a Japanese blog that says the video playback showed the heel of Toyonoshima's foot just barely touched the dirt first.

Japanese blog "Ozumo Torikumi Naiyou"

Well I guess that clears it up. It's debatable to me whether his heel touched, but at least it's a reason. I don't see why the shinpan didn't mention it.

BTW that Japanese blog gives a text play-by-play of every sekitori bout. Incredible detail.

I totally agree with you. I was surprised as well after seeing the replay. We can see how careful Toyonoshima was with his foot on the tawara. He waited as long as he could not to touch the ground before Shironoryu was down.

Asked about what happened, Hokutoriki said, "It wasn't a concussion. It was a temporary 'hernia of the neck' (首のヘルニア)." All the impact [of the tachiai] went to the neck. I couldn't sense anything below the neck . I am glad it wasn't a [serious] injury."

Robo's knockout tachiai

Takamisakari in the dressing room: "I was wooly-headed during the [nine-bout] losing streak. I would go shopping and I would go to the movies. I just couldn't find a way [to change my fortunes]."
