Pardon my ignorance, but what's an "actor-cum-film director"?

(In a state of confusion...)

Ah, ok. I got my parentheses wrong: not "[actor-cum-film] director" but "actor cum [film director]".

Thank goodness it wasn't "cum-film actor". (In a state of confusion...)

Well he has directed some movies (including some of the 'Rockys" and the more recent 'The Expendables'), so I guess the accusation is fair....

You never heard of The Party at Kitty and Stud - his first movie?

Edit: That should be 'The party at Kitty and Stud's'

Maybe Sly's presence will help spike ticket sales (if not already sold out). One time Billy Blanks (Billy Boot Camp) was at the KK during a promo tour and a long line formed to greet him and take pictures- I can only imagine the circus when a real "star" is in the seating area.

Of course, nothing will match the hubbub that occurred on my first visit to the KK:

Kotooshu's favorite actor -- Sylvester Stallone -- will be watching sumo at the Kokugikan on Saturday, according to the Japan Times.

That's all I needed -- complicated day, juggling regular guest and two first-timers, plus touching base with at least three others, last thing I need is a big film star of any genre -- oh but wait -- Rambo'll be downstairs for sure, where the rest of us can't go. I wonder how long the sensation will last. Have the NHK cameramen been primed to show him as much as possible? or will he be treated like a regular paying celebrity who must be allowed to enjoy himself? For some years a very famous Japanese actor had a regular seat in the rear sunakaburi, and the commentators were under strict instructions to respect his privacy. One time when I was on, the then British ambassador was in those rear seats with the visiting Peter Mandelson, looking like a Where's Willie (Waldo to the Americans) and I had to keep biting my tongue.

Was anybody here when the Village People, in full costume, were paraded into the West hanamichi? They were a sensation for about five minutes, until the next bout started, upon which the crowd lost interest and returned to shouting for the sumo. It was sad to see a man in a full Amerindian feather headdress becoming aware that nobody was looking at him any more. They all eventually backed out, aware that their photo op had taken place and was now over.

I'm sure I've forgotten something about tomorrow -- oh yes, remember to take the tickets for the first-timers and go outside at the right moment to hand them over. And get an early start; at least the start for the final three days doesn't come till tennish.

Orion, all ready for Day 14 and Senshuraku. For those who listen to the bilingual but don't know the schedule, it's Ross and Ken Swenson tomorrow and Hiro and Dave Shapiro on the final day. Dave's special claim to fame is, of course, that in his younger days he was actually in a good sumo club doing practical sumo. It is from personal experience that he is regarded as the expert on technique. I'll never forget, however, the time I came the day after he was scheduled to cover a special on recondite techniques, and the schedule had been moved on a day, which had me stuck. My mind worked extra fast that day, but I managed it -- even suddenly spotting in the final demonstration that the two lower-ranked rikishi being filmed were demonstrating the means of countering the technique. Bingo!

The detour this thread has taken is giving me second thoughts about the thread title...

You mean the "Debbie Does Dallas" reference was unintentional?

I'm sure it was intended by Umigame, I just didn't expect the thread to run right off the cliff with it.

Stallone was there with Dolph Lundgren.

The NHK broadcast showed them sitting with Konishiki at one of the tables in the rear of the 1st floor.

And the first bout they saw was Wakanosato vs. Mokonami -- what a bout!

I thought it was very punny.

While it was cool it was also a big pain in the ass! Everyone standing up to look at them at the corner and turning all their backs to the dohyo (he was sitting shomen side in a table box) Nobody was watching Wakanosato's match... What a shame and a distraction!! I remember the same when the prime minister came and everyone stopped watching the sumo....
