Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 2, 2010 (edited) Some Kyokai members are suggesting that they should change the customary torikumi making pattern in light of Hakuhou's attempt to break Futabayama's historical 69 consecutive wins record. Talk of even having him face Ozeki KaioU on day 1 are surfacing as well. "We can't treat this as a regular basho torikumi-wise. We should make him face KaioU, Tochiouzan and Kisenosato from the start," said they. The thinking behind this is if they go the usual west Komusubi/M1E/M1W and so forth route, it may dampen the excitement value. "I don't mind who my rival will be. 'Bring it on!' is what I feel," said Hakuhou. We should keep in mind that the head of the torikumi-making gang is Takanohana, so anything can happen.. Ticket sales are going well for the lately really low attended Kyushu basho, and the day 7 and day 8 masus are nearly sold out, day 7 being D-Day. Hakuhou has not lost since Asashouryuu's retirement. "My responsibility has 'made me bigger'.. Lately I feel that my position helps me help others become better!" he added. But will the traditionally traditional Torikumi Hensei Kaigi (THK) committee take the plunge? BTW, if Hakuhou zenshos again, he will break his own record of wins in a calendar year (86) and will make it 87. Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 2, 2010 Hakuhou started training in Fukuoka today-teppo and shiko. he then surprised everyone by doing something hitherto unseen: Hand pushing sumo. He was seen pushing the young ones' hands trying to topple them. This went on for a while, and then he took on the reporters too, beating them all. "I always liked hand pushing sumo It maintains my sumo sense. The first day of keiko is usually a laid-back day, so there's nothing to worry about. It's important not to alter my pace," said Hakuhou. Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 3, 2010 (edited) Hakuhou met the statue that was modeled after him today. The statue is of a Buddhist deity called Virupaksa (he sure paksa punch?). It's in Kumamoto at the Rengein Tanjoji. He then participated in some children's sumo and was "thrown down" by some six graders, much to the enjoyment of the audience. Or to try and do anything possible (admittedly don't think its a good effort anyway) to prevent a foreigner from breaking this japanese record...
Manekineko 200 Posted November 4, 2010 a Buddhist deity called Virupaksa One of Four Heavenly Kings, in Japan better known as Komokuten. Guardian of the west. I got hooked on Buddhist iconography (if that is the word), and especially to these four and to Twelve Heavenly Generals.
Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) Hakuhou had 20 bouts against the young guys in his own stable. He seems to be having problems finding suitable training partners. "The feeling is that we don't care who it is, we just want them to come.. Once upon a time, it went without saying that everyone wanted to train with the Yokozuna. That is not the case at present. Everyone is saying how Tochiouzan has become stronger, so I'd like to see him here.." said Hakuhou's mentor Kumagatani Oyakata. "I had a great training session. I'm doing it at my own pace," said Hakuhou himself. Still, if they don't come to him, he'll be coming after them. He intends to go to Sakaigawa as early as this Saturday to train with the likes of Goueidou. Edited November 4, 2010 by Kintamayama
Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 8, 2010 (edited) Hakuhou went for degeiko to Isegahama today where he faced compatriot Moukonami and Juryo Takarafuji- 16-0. He was seen receiving his opponents at the tachiai at the beginning. "Moving forward is keiko, defending is keiko- what's important is to do it in my own flow and sweat well.." he said. *It looked like childsplay.. He is well fit..," said Isegahama Oyakata. Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 9, 2010 As promised, Hakuhou went to Sakaigawa for degeiko today and battled the likes of Toyohibiki, Masunoyama and 4 other Juryo guys, winning 20-0 and not losing his breath. Goueidou did not face him, as he injured his left knee during jungyo. "I got to face many sekitori, so it was good sweat," said Hakuhou, using his latest mantra. OTOH, Kotoshougiku, who is slated to face the Yokozuna and hopes to stop him, said that "Even Hakuhou has his weakness. If someone comes out at him hard and fast.. I'd like to step out well. Beating him and stopping the record run is akin to an Ozeki promotion.."
Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 11, 2010 (edited) Yesterday Hakuhou had 32 consecutive bouts against Goueidou, Toyohibiki, and others as he came to Sakaigawa beya again for keiko. "I'm in good shape, as I trained well during the jungyo too. Yes, there is a lot of pressure but you never know till you try," he said. Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 11, 2010 Today he went to Isegahama for his final training session and fought the likes of Asoufuji, Takarafuji and even Makushita hope Homarefuji and was 14-2. "No more keiko till the basho. I did a lot during the jungyo. Perfect shape? Yes!," he summed.

Kintamayama 45,111 Posted November 14, 2010 A funny thing happened on the way to the forum for Hakuhou. He went to the Dohyo Matsuri ceremony which is held one day beforw the start of tha basho. As he was walking towards his seat, just as he passed his day one opponent Tochinoshin who was already seated, he stumbled and nearly fell. Gasping was heard all around, but he managed to compose himself and sat in his place gracefully. Stumbleupon:

kotoeikoku 0 Posted November 15, 2010 I'm so disappointed...Hakuho's run was probably one of the best 'storylines' in Makuuchi these days. I doubt even Hakuho can muster a second run of this length, but you never know. On the other hand, if the Yusho race actually becomes competitive this basho maybe it will help fill those empty seats. Btw, how on EARTH did Baruto get out of that one? What kimarite was that???
Vikanohara 171 Posted November 15, 2010 Apparently harimanage. Never seen it before.
Jejima 1,384 Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) Btw, how on EARTH did Baruto get out of that one? What kimarite was that??? That was my first reaction too - I would love to see a replay. The win was by harimanage which does look like a good call - although perhaps a torinaoshi might have been fairer. (Shame it wasn't Harumafuji who won, as the pun, 'Harry manage(d) to win' is wasted.) Edited November 15, 2010 by Jejima

Naganoyama 5,911 Posted November 15, 2010 It is a shame that it is not possible to close the voting in a poll without closing the discussion thread that accompanies it. I would have liked to have replied to the last message in the "How far will Hakuhou go?" poll. As this is the nearest thread (well I thought it was, but it seems to be about Baruto and harimanage...) I will post my reply here. I was only going to say that it was disappointing that if someone goes to all the trouble of cheating in a poll, they don't bother to check their facts. Surely the final count was 63, not 64. What a silly Billy...
