Hakuhou preparations- Hatsu 2011

Recommended Posts

Hakuhou trained for the first time today under the watchful eyes of new/old Miyagino Oyakata. He took on Tochiouzan and Tochinoshin who came for degeiko and won all his more than ten bouts. "No changes from before, but I'd like to raise one or two more sekitori and get some new recruits," said the Oyakata.

"Last year we had all kinds of stuff happening but in the end everyone gambarized well," said Hakuhou.

"Anyone else wanna disagree with me about something??":

Hakuhou had 19 bouts against Tochiouzan and Tochinoshin and Juryo Tochinowaka who came for degeiko and was looking his usual great self. "It looks like they will be coming tomorrow as well, and I thank them deeply," said Hakuhou. Before the last basho, not many rikishi came for degeiko and that hampered the Yokozuna's preparations. This time around, Kasugano beya has been coming regularly, making him very happy. "He has been doing good keiko. He is gradually increasing the number of bouts,"said the old-new-old Miyagino Oyakata, the one who doesn't look like a drag queen.

The new Oyakata is flexing his muscles somewhat. Taking into consideration that there are not many keiko days left (tomorrow actually, as the 6th is the Meiji shrine commemorating dohyo-iri and the weekend after the matches are announced are usually rest days) the Oyakata has suggested Hakuhou train over the weekend as well. "No way," said Hakuhou. "Way," answered the Oyakata.

We shall see.

"Youse gots to be kidding, right? Yuk yuk yuk!"

Reason for this-he had 19 bouts yesterday, losing one to Tochiouzan and two to Tochinoshin, which must have started the new/old thinking.

Hakuhou went for degeiko at Tokitsukaze today, having 17 bouts against Toyonoshima. He started off lightly, taking on degeiko-ing Soukokurai three times, then proceeded to tackle Toyonoshima, mixing sharp tachiais with defensive ones. "I'm getting better," observed Hakuhou. "His sumo is better. He is not out of breath and his stamina has improved," said the old/new Oyakata. "The Yokozuna is very good at switching positions and making quick changes to suit his own sumo, but I feel that I can cope with that and have a chance of winning," said Toyonoshima.

Edit- 19-1 overall - 3-0 against Soukokurai, 15-1- and 1 tie (!!) against Toyonoshima.

Unless there will be anything unexpected, today is Hakuhou's last keiko day. Yesterday, he expressed his express wish to train with Kisenosato. The problem is he has the dedication dohyo at the Meiji Shrine in the afternoon so degeiko is out of the question. We know what Naruto Oyakata thinks about degeiko, so what will happen? "He's going to call him personally and invite him over. Degeiko is out of the question!" said Miyagino the Current From Before.

We'll know in a few minutes..

Just in-his old left elbow injury seems to be acting up. "Every time it gets cold the pain flares up," explained Miyagino. His elbow was bandaged yesterday during keiko. Papers say this pain coupled with insufficient keiko are a cause for concern.

With Toyonoshima and Bandagenoyama yesterday:

EDIT: It was degeiko to Isegahama today with 15 bouts against Harumafuji. "The keiko was good," said Hakuhou looking relaxed and satisfied.
