8 Oyakata who were demoted from iin to shunin after the Yaocho scandal have been re-promoted. Magaki, Kiriyama, Arashio, Isegahama, Hanakago, Irumagawa, Tatsunami, and Kasugano.

That's rather unusual, isn't it? IIRC there wasn't a time element to their demotions, so I wonder what's going on behind the scenes.

Oyakata typically only spend two years as shunin anyway, so given that no length of punishment was specified, one year seems about right for what, let's face it, was just a one-size-fits-all penalty for public consumption anyway. I think it's also in line with what was done with e.g. Otake and Magaki after the cannabis cases. (The ones hit with the big yaocho punishments, Michinoku and Onoe, remain blissfully demoted.)

Edit: Although in Onoe's case that's also due to his subsequent DUI issue.

Edit edit: Full list of the original demotions here. I see there were actually 10 iin->shunin demotions - Oguruma and Kasugayama (now Ikazuchi) already ended theirs by being voted in as riji three months ago. That might also have something to do with the other 8 being let off now...hard to maintain that two guys' punishments already finished and the others' equivalent penalties did not.

Apparently the repromotions were even back-dated to April 1...oookay. Appropriate date, I guess.

Ex-Hoshikaze is still contesting his firing as well. Today was the last day of his trial. He is demanding re-reinstatement as a rikishi and ¥24,000,000 in restitution. Final verdict-May 24th. Today, another banned Mongolian, Kouryuu, gave evidence in Hoshikaze's defense. "Just by watching how earnest he was on the dohyo, you can tell he could never participate in such actions." he said.

Hoshikaze's Benny says he is 99% sure they will win.

Claim rejected today by the Tokyo District Court.

Former makuuchi Sokokurai at his trial denied under tears that he ever did yaocho. On the 19th at the oral proceedings videos of two bouts were presented. Both against Kasuganishiki, one Natsu 2010 classified as yaocho, the other Hatsu 2010 as not. Former Sokokurai explained each. His lawyer: "With the videos we showed that it was not yaocho. I want to bring him back to the dohyo."

The trial continues on October the 15th. The NSK wants the former Kasuganishiki to appear in court, if not the trial is over. Within this year the verdict is expected.

No advancement in the Sokokurai case on the 15th. The presiding judge had new questions for the sumo kyokai about punishment regulations and applied examples. Time to answer till end of Nov.

The lawyer of Sokokurai: "I wanted to have him back (in sumo) for the Hatsu basho, but it cannot be helped." Sokokurai continues training at a gym. Final hearing to be at the Dec. 20th. Verdict maybe in Jan.

Hoshikaze's trial in the appeal court ended on the 24th. Upholding the first decision, the dismissal is valid, the appeal rejected: "It is hard to say that there was a motive for false testimony."

Maybe he tries it one more time in the supreme court: "Any way possible, I'll return to the dohyo."

The hearings in the Sokokurai reinstatement trial concluded today - the announcement of the judge's decision has been set for March 25, although the two parties were urged to settle on their own until then. Sokokurai's lawyer affirmed that his client's priority is a return to the dohyo and finding a financial settlement is secondary for them, so I wouldn't hold my breath for a solution before March.

The plot thickens...the previously rumoured notion that Kasuganishiki and Enatsukasa didn't actually accuse Sokokurai appears to be true in some way; Sokokurai's lawyer claims that both "key witnesses" were unwilling to sign their names to affidavits that included Sokokurai's name among those they admitted doing yaocho with. (I'm not sure if this means they were initially unwilling and later did so, or that they never did.) In addition the Kyokai side appears to have handed over incomplete documents relating to their investigation. In particular parts of Kasuganishiki's testimony were mysteriously missing, which Sokokurai's defense team claims was done to hide the fact that he had commented in the negative about Sokokurai's supposed involvement. The document snafu has been corrected by now, but the Kyokai isn't looking good in this so far.

Found this..Interesting.

Writer Yorimasa Takeda, who in the past (with Shukan Gendai) had been found guilty of libel because of wrongly accusing the NSK of yaocho, in 2007 Asashoryu, has lost his counter lawsuit against the NSK on the 10th, he plans to appeal.

The „yaocho mail“ surfacing, he sued the NSK for 10 million yen in damages, claiming „they lied at court, saying that yaocho doesn't exist“ - the court rejected that, citing that for the cases he had named there were no proof, so it's not possible to say they lied.

Former juryo Mongolian Hoshikaze lost the final appeal – his dismissal is definite.
