Its my local basho, the one basho a year in my back yard and this year it has gone. Posters have already been ripped down from the Osaka Pref. Gym. ilovesumo 12 Posted February 4, 2011 According to the Yomiuri this morning. Big headline I officially ask you for a meeting and a chat. My flight goes on 22nd, will be there from 23rd. Cannot change the booking - more expensive than going. Time to visit the castle...
Asameshimae 220 Posted February 4, 2011 My newspaper this morning didn't mention it, but when I saw this I check the Japanese online new, and there it is, several links. A meeting on the 4th (probably in the evening) has decided to cancel the Osaka basho according to the chairman of the kyokai. It also confirmed the last time this happened, which I wasn't sure the exact date of, it was last cancelled in 1946, 65 years ago...

It also confirmed the last time this happened, which I wasn't sure the exact date of, it was last cancelled in 1946, 65 years ago... Can you post the links please? All I can see , including Sekihryu's post, is that there is a possibility that the basho will be called off on Monday at the special riji meeting, nothing really finally decided or announced yet. All serious onlines are speculating, based on ticket sale postponements and inside information/rumors. Not official for sure at this time, but usually these speculations are later proven to be true. Asameshimae 220 Posted February 4, 2011 Yeah, I jumped the gun when I saw that, it does say what Kintama summed up.hence the へ in 中止へ。I should have read on. Sorry, I got carried away. Apologies. It could have just been a tactic by the chairman by saying "cancellation can't be ruled out" to show they are serious.
Kintamayama 45,530 Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) Yes, let's all take it easy for now, shall we? Nothing will happen till Monday, if at all. Maybe try to water down the blinding subject for now? Asashosakari 19,664 Posted February 5, 2011 (edited) Borderline on-topic, somewhere at Mainichi earlier I saw speculation that they might end up holding Haru basho behind closed doors (they last did that in 1945 in the waning days of WWII) so as to maintain the sanctity of the whole "show must go on/our charter forces us to have 6 basho and 6 new banzuke a year" thing. I'll try to find the article again... Edit: here, including a quote by ex-Akinoshima in favour of holding a closed-doors basho if need be. sekihiryu 51 Posted February 5, 2011 Oops sorry for jumping the gun, must confess my kanji reading ability is not up to the task of reading the whole article. The headline was what tripped it off for me. I thought it meant going to be or to be rather than might be. Big difference. Why rip down the posters. At the gym though, a bluff? Nitpick: The upcoming board meeting is on Sunday. 大相撲春場所中止へ、八百長解明間に合わずwhich Google's language tools translates as "Sumo spring sumo tournament to stop, too late match-fixing understanding". I'm not sure what that means, because it sounds to me as if it says "we found out about match fixing too late, so we can't cancel the spring sumo tournament". They mean that they're not sure they'll be able to puzzle out enough details in time ("understanding too late"), i.e. the investigation won't be nearly complete before the basho is set to take place. And as ilovesumo mentioned above, some people are preemptively putting even Natsu in doubt, in case the yaocho network investigations get even more involved. This history occurred to me, but in many ways, the last thing sumo needs is a "behind closed doors" basho, that just makes it look like more of the same, that sumo is repeating it's inwardness and collusion. I think they would totally lose the public if they did that.

I think they would totally lose the public if they did that. How would it be more of the same? Everybody involved would be taking a huge financial bath - even moreso than if they simply cancelled everything and stayed in Tokyo - and all just for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of the task set out in their charter. (Inasmuch as that's still possible after Kasuganishiki et al. compromising a different part of it.) In any case, the press are typically allowed to be present during closed-door sports events. Asameshimae 220 Posted February 5, 2011 I am saying if they have the basho, it shouldn't be behind closed doors. The reasons for a behind closed doors basho were different than they are now. And I do hope they go ahead and have a basho, not because I am dying to see it, but b/c I don't want it to be the beginning of the end.
Babaryutaikai 1 Posted February 5, 2011 Well, Ross Mihara stated just a little while ago "The JSA has just cancelled next month's sumo basho in Osaka. The first time that's happened since 1946." I would think he should know...........It's on his Facebook status. :-(
