Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted May 18, 2011 (edited) Aoiyama needed a tori-naoshi but beat Nionoumi convincingly to get the kachi-koshi and really earning the juryo promotion. Takanoyama on the other hand was pretty lucky as Myogiryu stepped out while chasing the Czech lightweight around, but at 4-2 he also truly earned a juryo promotion. I was more impressed by 32 years 8 months old Kaonishiki who easily beat Sadanofuji and at 4-2 also is sure to make his juryo debut in Nagoya. Sotairyu won against Minami with a sotogake and at 5-1 should be sure to return to juryo after his sole 5-10 in Aki 2009. The third win might already be enough for Kanbayashi for another return to juryo while Matsutani has no such problems at 6-0 and has only to worry about getting a second consecutive makushita yusho with only 18 years old Chiyootori standing in his way. Tomorrow we have some early and nice exchange bouts coming with 3-3 Myogiryu and Nionoumi having their seventh bout in juryo against underperforming Tsurugidake and Shironoryu. Flohru 176 Posted May 18, 2011 Tomorrow we have some early and nice exchange bouts coming with 3-3 Myogiryu and Nionoumi having their seventh bout in juryo against underperforming Tsurugidake and Shironoryu. I don't think there is any way Shironoryu is in danger of his Juryo spot with those 17 additional ranks to be filled up. Maybe even Masuraumi and Tsurugidake are somehow allowed to hang on if they win one more. Looking at the current win-loss-ratio of Juryo-Makushita bouts (5:12), it seems as if the Juryo guys know that they have much less to fight for than the Makushita guys this time... Pippooshu 1 Posted May 18, 2011 I hope Takanoyama will be Juryo. Kakizoe goes down but Matsutani stands up above czech rikishi (for Zensho) and maybe Kaonishiki will be in 5-2 at the end. I hope Takanoyama will be sekitori but I'm not sure...

I thought about that too but than decided that "exchange bout" is the traditional term for these type of late-basho bouts. Besides, there are "only" 13 additional ranks to fill up, not 17 since makuuchi and juryo are both one rank shorter than usual in Nagoya. So I really am not all that sure if Shironoryu is safe in case of a 3-12.
Flohru 176 Posted May 18, 2011 (edited) I hope Takanoyama will be sekitori but I'm not sure... It's a certainty. In fact with his 4th win Takanoyama is already pretty sure to be in the upper half of Juryo next basho. Even with a loss in his final bout he could very well end up at J4 or J5 (assuming that they don't do anything extraordinary like promoting mk upper and mid Juryo rikishi). I was afraid other rikishi step over Takanoyama, with czech wrestler forced to makushita 1 rank... Your news is a beautiful news... (Clapping wildly...) So I really am not all that sure if Shironoryu is safe in case of a 3-12. One of those unofficial pre-basho comments was that "6 wins from the bottom of juryo could be enough to stay", which one might take to mean that double-digit losses are still no-go territory for somebody like Tsurugidake. That wouldn't be terribly unjustified...5-10 typically still keeps you above Ms7e (the current #66 floor), but not so much that it would be an outrage to drop somebody with that rank/wins combination out of the top 66 after this special basho. Shironoryu is three ranks above the bottom but if I was him I wouldn't plan on being safe with less than 5-10.
