Orion 431 Posted July 14, 2012 Hochi reports that to support Oosunaarashi, a personal koenkai is about to be formed, which is highly unusual for a jonidan rikishi. The central person is the proprietor of an Egyptian restaurant. About 350 people already have been assembled. Unless the rules have been changed they can't call it a koenkai, because only sekitori are allowed to have koenkai. Of course, considering some of the silly names being used by the new political splinter parties these days, Oosunaarashi's supporters can call themselves practically anything they like. It'll be interesting to see how the Kyokai handles it, though. Orion
Akinomaki 40,760 Posted July 20, 2012 Oosunaarashi got his kachikoshi before the Ramadan. Now he's spending the early hours before dawn eating burgers at a nearby 24h open McDonald's. After 4 a.m. he sleeps again. His phlegmon still requires treatment at a nearby hospital. He first lost 15 kg from 145 kg and is now again at 135 kg.
Nabuko 11 Posted July 20, 2012 His the last bout is early in morning and he will not be affected with fasting. Anyway sumo could be treated as a job and if that job requires eating he is not obliged to fast. For example now is Olympics and I guess that it is not supposed that muslims sportsmen do not eat for sunrise to sunset.
Kintamayama 45,505 Posted July 22, 2012 (edited) He won his fifth today. He beat Hokutohana by sukuinage. Next stop-Sandanme. Edited July 22, 2012 by Kintamayama
Orion 431 Posted July 22, 2012 He won his fifth today. He beat Hokutohana by sukuinage. Next stop-Sandanme. In any case, rikishi in the bottom four ranks in principle have six bouts up to Day 12, and then the final bout on only one of the last three days. Ramadan started on Day 13, so he had to worry about only one bout in fasting conditions. And of course, outside daylight hours, observant Muslims can eat as much as they want. This kind of thinking became part of my life in the seven years I lived in Singapore, back in the 1960s. The only relevant problem was, that we tried to avoid Malay taxi drivers especially in the afternoons when their energies were likely to be most depleted. shumitto 418 Posted July 22, 2012 This conversation has reminded me of this. In any case, he can talk with his local muslim authority (maybe of his native Egypt) and do it after his active days are over.

Akinomaki 40,760 Posted August 4, 2012 Osunaarashi is cheering for the Egypt men's soccer team against Japan "They'll win 2-1". His father plays soccer and was a member of the national team.
Igordemorais 75 Posted August 4, 2012 It's that really skinny kid! With that kind of genetic predisposition, can we expect anything from him? One thing we gotta say: if he's there he must love the sport.
kuroimori 1,634 Posted August 4, 2012 It's that really skinny kid! With that kind of genetic predisposition, can we expect anything from him? One thing we gotta say: if he's there he must love the sport. You consider 138kg to be skinny...? That would put Takanoyama in the anorexic category. I suggest you doublecheck posts #84 or #87 about how Osunaarashi looks like and the video footage here and there for the question what to expect from him ;-)
Igordemorais 75 Posted August 5, 2012 I know Osunaarashi is huge. I'm talking about this homeboy right here:

Orion 431 Posted August 5, 2012 Yeah skinny kids never amount to much. Don't know what what could be making this guy think otherwise. Oh yes, how I remember that one! The photo was already old when I started watching, but it was there right in front of us when we saw what Taiho had become. It's a very good thing they've kept it up on the wall. Akinomaki 40,760 Posted August 17, 2012 Osunaarashi on the 17th was on NHK Document 20 min. I can't get the bigger pictures and soon the shown thumbnails will be scrolled to that of the 18th. I'll try to listen to the record of it from JSTV, 25:00 CET.
Akinomaki 40,760 Posted August 18, 2012 Not drinking at daytime during Ramadan was tough for Oosunaarashi while doing keiko. Usually drinking about 6 litres a day (is that standard ? Quite a strain for the heart), he was down to 2 litres. He also lost muscle strength. Next year the Ramadan may begin around July 9th, covering nearly the whole Nagoya basho (start on the 7th). "I can't think about that now" he said.

Zenjimoto 40 Posted August 31, 2012 Who is that PUNY kid in front of him at about 1:25 into the video?
Mysko 0 Posted September 1, 2012 Great report indeed. Thanks a lot Nishinoshima ! I guess it's even better for people who understand japanese, which is not my case (too bad for me !). I was wondering, at 15 minutes into the video, was he being lectured by his oyakata for putting down his aite, who had already stepped out of the tawara and lost ? kuroimori 1,634 Posted September 1, 2012 I was wondering, at 15 minutes into the video, was he being lectured by his oyakata for putting down his aite, who had already stepped out of the tawara and lost ? Yes, he was reprimanded about that. At one point Otake-oyakata said that he better not do that again cos then it would be better he goes back to Egypt. I hope Booty gets used to such (repetitive) lecturing without feeling tempted to start arguing...
Bugman 384 Posted September 1, 2012 (edited) Who is that PUNY kid in front of him at about 1:25 into the video? http://sumodb.sumoga...hi.aspx?r=12021 I saw him as well, he must have a lot of courage and determination, being brave and physically strong is one thing, having that same bravery when being weak is something else, having said that i saw a young Hakuho in some youtube vid or other and he certainly did not look like the colossus he is now, so there is hope to pack on a few kilo's. :) Sagatsukasa comes to mind actually, one of my favourites, short by rikishi standards (in my own mind i have the nick-name for him "the dung-beetle," not in a negative way, but out of admiration because of the way he can roll his much larger opponents out the way) but he can be very strong and difficult to deal with, actually make it "the scarab beetle," sounds more dignified and mysterious. :) Edited September 1, 2012 by Bugman
kenzo 5 Posted September 2, 2012 Oosunaarashi is a star in the making.....it is no more a question of if..... but when......He will surely make all those doubting Thomas's eat their words..I for one would not like to be standing behind the Shikirisen when he launches off from his line next week....It will not be a question of the Eagle has landed but the Egyptian Eagle has taken off......
