Video Stream - Kyushu 11

In the absence of any reports to the contrary, I assume that the NSK will once again provide a live internet video stream of the action in ALL divisions every day of the Kyushu basho. The link(s) should go active at about 8:20 AM Japan Standard time with the Jonokuchi division and continue through the end of the Makuuchi Division at about 6:00 PM.

To watch the action, you need a high capacity (non-dialup) internet link and Microsoft Media Player or an equivalent ( many use VLC ). The links to get to it are:

Links 1 and 2 are usable with WMP and most others. WMP will not play the two mms links, but VLC and others can handle them. One or more of them should be available for Kyushu. If you try to open any of the links before the NSK activates them for the day, you will get a connect error message. Keep trying.

The approximate start times for each division through day 12 should be:

Jk - 08:50 AM JST

Jd - 09:00 AM

Sd - 11:20 AM

Ms - 1:40 PM

Juryo - 3:05 PM

Mk - 4:20 PM

Dohyo-iri: Juryo 2:40 PM, Mk 3:50 PM

All times are +/- 15 minutes

Jonokuchi should start on Day 1 at about 08:20 AM. Days 13-15 have fewer matches per day, and they should start at about 10:30 AM

I sure hope they never stop offering this service. I tried to write in the feedback box to thank them and let them know there are people who appreciate it, but there's something wrong with their email application. It keeps telling me to add an email address and I've tried everything.

I did the update to 5.0.1 yesterday, haven't noticed any problems with the battery.

However, I use a Mophie battery pack most of the time, so I don't always see the actual battery results.

Most of what I've read suggests that it was the first batch if iPhone 4 that had battery issues, and the update didn't resolve it for those users.

Will kep an eye on it this evening, and see if it is draining rapidly while streaming, but I don't think so.

Must say the picture quality was nearly HD quality on the iPhone, and even in VLC looked much better than TV Japan's broadcast.

Just to update, I've been streaming for the past 90 minutes, during which time my battery has gone from 98% to 70%.

That doesn't seem excessive to me, but YMMV. Also, as noted, I have the option of the Mophie battery pack if things get too low.

One nice thing about loading the .asx file as opposed to typing in the mms:// address manually, is that it has links to two feeds, so if one hangs up, I can click on the other one and reconnect.

Re: Andorid apps; I did a brief search this afternoon, but didn't find a whole lot. VPlayer and yxplayer are out there, but I have no way to test them. You may want to have a look and/or try them out. Both claim to handle mms:// feeds.

VLC claims to be working on an Android app, but it's not available yet. If you've got a Linux box, and feel adventurous enough to want to try compiling it yourself, there is a Wiki "How-To" page here:

I remember to have tried that one (among countless other players who also claim to play mms streams).

Well, it didn't work - but in my case that just means it doesn't work right away, as I am not really a tech-wiz.

It seems that Apple is still one or two steps ahead in this department, I found out that there is an iPhone version of KeyHole TV.
