Day 13 lower division results

Recommended Posts

Chiyootori and Sensho were the finalists in the eight rikishi makushita yusho playoff last basho and today both were involved to create another eight rikishi senshuraku playoff. Sensho narrowly missed out with 5-2 but he made Sakumayama lose his first hon-basho bout to end his career start win streak at 27 and he will get a juryo promotion out of this. Young Chiyootori beat Kotokuni in a long bout and is the sole kettei-sen repeater as lead makushita Satoyama managed to send Hakiai out with okuridashi, getting kachi-koshi and juryo promotion for himself. The other five kettei-sen participants are a mix of older rikishi Terashita, Kotoyutaka and Shoho with two young talents Tatsu and Akinokawa. The three young playoff participants actually are three of the four youngest rikishi in makushita and higher (with Tsurubayashi being the second youngest).

Kotokawazu also is rather young with his 19th birthday last week and more importantly he is new and already 23-5 for his career as he went 7-0 in his sandanme debut with a win over Isshinryu. It's not his first yusho still as heavy Kenho from the same entry class is 21-7 for his career with a 7-0 of his own, beating Oruri. This win gave Daishoko the outright yusho, giving him a strong rebound after two consecutive 1-6 scores. Goshi didn't have an easy bout with Tochigidake but he came through at the end to secure a 7-0 jonokuchi yusho with Aokishin following at 6-1.

Goshi didn't have an easy bout with Tochigidake but he came through at the end to secure a 7-0 jonokuchi yusho with Aokishin following at 6-1.

Even a pretty weird bout it was.

Or perhaps I'm not used to watching sumo at that level. :-P

Jd9w Ikeru (5-2) kainahineri Jd13e Tokiarashi (4-3)

And this was great skill ! (Showing respect...)

So is an 8-way playoff in sumo done as one would expect? That is like the NCAAs or the like, quarters, semis, finals?

Take it you weren't watching last basho's 8-way playoff in makushita? (Showing respect...) Yes, simple 8-man knockout tourney, but with redraws for each round. If you have 20 minutes to kill,

- makushita starts around 09:20.

(I still get a kick out of the hanamichi fist-bump between Sakumayama and Higonojo.)

I would like to remind everyone that Goushi is the grandson of ex-Komusubi Wakabayama.

This win gave Daishoko the outright yusho, giving him a strong rebound after two consecutive 1-6 scores.

Odd but perhaps not entirely surprising factoid - in the 33 basho since 2001 where jonidan had exactly three 6-0 rikishi (prior to 2001 the division was too large to facilitate that most of the time), this is only the second basho in which the lowest-ranked of the three has won the yusho outright. The other one was Aki 2008.
