Doitsuyama 1,190 Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) Another win from Baruto coupled with a Hakuho loss means that the makuuchi yusho is decided long before the two contenders even meet on senshuraku. It's the first makuuchi yusho for the big Estonian ozeki while Hakuho is in a six way tie for the race to jun-yusho as all pursuers except Chiyonokuni won. There are a lot of new rikishi in lower makuuchi and it is interesting to see who can prove his worth here and who must go back to juryo. Chiyonokuni and Tenkaiho are doing best so far with both kachi-koshi already, but Sadanofuji also is a pleasant surprise at 7-6 following his 8-7 shin-makuuchi basho. Nionoumi has to go back to juryo, but bigger disappointments are somehat hyped Kyokushuho at 3-10 and Kaisei at 4-9. Yoshiazuma also looks like he will join those three down to juryo as he also is at 10 losses. Sagatsukasa and Tosayutaka close to demotion as well while Takanoyama needs one more win to stay. The juryo yusho race to a surprising turn as Amuru didn't appear for the all-leader bout against Chiyotairyu who now is the sole leader again as Sotairyu lost to Takarafuji who looks like he will join Tamawashi, Wakanosato and Ikioi on the up elevator. Hochiyama and Shotenro also can get promoted if they win but Masunoyama falls to make-koshi again. Flohru 176 Posted January 20, 2012 It hasn't been mentioned yet I think but it definitely should be as the Ozeki crew was heavily criticized lately by some: our Ozeki are standing at a magnificent combined 50-15 this basho. What's the record or to put it differently: Is there a way to search the Doitsubase for basho where five Ozeki achieved a combined score of 50 wins or more? Not exactly with a number of ozeki, but maybe this works too: Basho with at least 45 wins by ozeki until day 13. This basho is tied as second best behind the 52-13 in Nagoya 1963. This is also the best ozeki total basho at 56-19 despite the bunch losing a lot bouts against non-ozeki on day 14 and 15. This basho there are only two bouts against Hakuho open, so the score will be between 54-21 and 56-19, possibly tying the record.

I'm not sure if that can be done, but I don't have a lot of time at the moment. Here is the expanded list of all basho with five Ozeki; 1963 Nagoya has the five Ozeki combining for 56 wins, but I only gave it a quick scroll. As they say: You do the math. (Showing respect...) Doitsuyama 1,190 Posted January 20, 2012 J8e Tochinonada (3-10) J13w Chiyotairyu (11-2) It seems to me like a Tochinonada intai watch must be installed before it's too late. Another loss would mean certain demotion to makushita and the torikumi makers certainly didn't give him a favorable matchup for tomorrow. Somebody wants him ready for the riji-election? Asashosakari 19,451 Posted January 20, 2012 I'm a bit surprised they're not saving Arawashi as a potential Tochinonada opponent for senshuraku. Rank Rikishi Rec + Tsho Tochi Masu Hoku Tshin Kita J6e Tokushoryu 1-12 - --- L06 L13 --- --- J8e Tochinonada 3-10 2 W06 --- L08 L07 J10w Masuraumi 5-8 1 W13 W08 --- W11 W06 L05 J11e Hokutokuni 5-7-1 1 L11 --- W02 W06 J12w Tokushinho 6-7 1 --- W07 L06 L02 --- --- J13e Kitaharima 6-7 1 --- W05 L06 --- --- I suppose it's possible that Tokushoryu will barely hang on if he wins his last two bouts and other rikishi get themselves demoted, so I left him in for now. 4 credible promotees though and just two demotees even with Tokushoryu at the moment, so that would require a lot of things to break his way. Not only that, but two of the Ozeki defeated the sole Yokozuna with two more to go, one Ozeki already secured the Yusho and three are still in Jun-yusho race already having double digit wins. From statistics point of view they are doing their job very well.
