Gyoji - Opinions and Evaluation

Recommended Posts

HELLO! (Applauding...) I want to ask a question relating to the gyoji. Do you have a favorite judge who judged now or in the past? For what you value it? What do you think about the sound too nokotta, which appears at the fight? Each gyoji seems a bit different this voice.

I personally really appreciate kimura shonosuke who judge, for example, the fight

He was very thorough and closely approached, his decisions were quick and reliable and the voice of a very dynamic! Currently I like the way kimura masanao refereeing, has a slightly hoarse voice and unmistakable. Great role does gyoji, because I like to watch them and pays them much attention.

I've always liked Kimura Shozaburo because he always seems to be enjoying himself and smiling all over his face. He inspired me to make this Morph.

My favourite was the top ranking one that recently left, he was like the Pierluigi Collina of Sumo :) why did he leave, mandatory retirement?

Kimura Sanrio (Holiday feeling...)

Isn't he from the same heya as Kittytaikai?

Kimura Sanrio (Sign of approval...)

(Holiday feeling...) Good one!

Do not associate this gyoji ... Show me a link as referee.

That was just a clever joke - Sanrio is the company behind the Hello Kitty empire, and Onibushou's avatar is a Hello Kitty gyoji.

There's only one gyoji who sticks out in my mind at the moment, but I'm ashamed to say I don't know his name. He's one of the lower division gyoji, maybe third or fourth on duty during a day's bouts. Anyway, I call him (affectionately, mostly) the Sergeant Major Gyoji - he really does belt out the names at top volume!

Future Gyoji: Shikimori Tondafuji. (Holiday feeling...) I'm practicing my yobidashi skills.

Sadly, we are grown men--sort of. Who cares, though? Sumo rocks

Miyagino-beya's Shikimori Naotaro, if the identification on

That's him! (Holiday feeling...) Thanks, it's good to put a name to the voice - he sure does have his own style.

How is it possible that everyone just calls gyoji "nokotta" a sound so different depending on gyoji? Sometimes it's hard to believe that they are saying the same thing! Compare, for example, these two recordings below.

Yeah, some gyoji shout something that sounds more like "taragatt taragatt taragattA" than "nokotta nokotta nokotta". I generally like it when the gyoji clearly say "nokotta".

Remember the times when he was Akebono, Takanohana, Kaio and other stars, then the current shonosuke kimura was a judge in juryo. But I'm talking about what's going on. Now recall the whole range gyoji who the judges were in the division makunouhi. Here are my opinions: he was so small the judge (shkimori kandayu?), Very low and chubby, who moved little after dohyo, his voice sounded like karakaraka karakara ka ...

Then kimura jonosuke (recently retired as a kimura shonosuke) his voice was curious if it had sounded in the throat and the dumpling was a little hoarse.

Then there was the kimura koiji, poorly judged, and often it was not (he had long breaks) and long-held pointing gunbai won. His voice was quiet.

I also remember kimura michinosuke, his voice was great! He wore flashy clothes and sounded like a cock!

asanosuke kimura was slightly nasal voice. Often hakioooy Hooi said, even as steel wrestlers shortly.

I remember three judges of the former shonosuke kimura, I do not know what was the number, but he was very fast, super cheered and he was not mistaken! He was also a gryoji before him, who judged the second-last and third from the end of the fight, a black grandfather. Before him, se

All your gyojis are nice and all, but my favorite is the "moonwalking gyoji" (forgot his name, sanyaku guy)-every time he does that it kills me.

35th Kimura Shonosuke is my all-time favorite for sure. I always used to wish the TV commentators would just shut up already when he was announcing musubi-no-ichiban (usually the Japanese announcers did, the English announcers tended to talk right over him). Hearing him announce the final bout live the five times I've actually made it to a basho in person has been very enjoyable.

I actually think the new Kimura Shonosuke is pretty good at announcing too, he has a strong voice - I look forward to hearing him at Nagoya when I go this year. The gyoji in that "moonwalking" video is another one with real personality. And there's one guy in early Makuuchi bouts who says "te o tsuite" in a very conversational tone that always make me laugh, like he's offering some tea and biscuits... more like a polite request than an imperative.

Listen to the gyoji call out the names of the rikishi, and then listen to them as they're announced over the PA system. They have their own unique ways of pronouncing things.

Anyone know the name of the gyoji in this ceremony?

You mean the one being chucked up in the air? I'm afraid I can't identify him, sorry, but he should be the lowest-ranking gyoji who participated in the dohyo matsuri ceremony that preceded the basho, according to the post below by Jonosuke. So if someone knows which gyoji took part in that, we'll know the name of the brave man who risked his neck being tossed into the air by some intoxicated shindeshi. (Yusho winner...)

As Orion san writes it is a low ranking gyoji who gets tossed up but not any low ranking gyoji.

According to our friend, Makiko Uchidate, who knows about the history of sumo and religion, this ceremony on the senshuraku is the companion to the Dohyo Matsuri ceremony they perform prior to the basho. In that ceremony a number of gyoji and Kyokai people gather around the dohyo to pray for the safe 15 days of competition by burying selected items in the center of the dohyo to cleanse and make the place sacred.

The ceremony at the end is to release all that and express our appreciation. So the gyoji who gets tossed is one of the gyoji who was involved in the initial ceremony but generally the lowest rank gyoji who attended the initial ceremony.

The closing ceremony also provides a celebratory cup of sake to the new recruit(s) who were presented on the Nakabi after doing Mae-zumo. And at the end they do the tossing - obviously if there are a few recruits like this basho, a bunch of yobidashi need to come over to help him out.

I found a YouTube video of the ceremony in other basho, obviously taken by a spectator.
