Asashosakari 19,653 Posted March 3, 2012 工藤良平 (Keiichi Yoshihiro??) Surname looks like Kudo to me (without a dictionary though). I agree with Doitsu. Maybe KudoU RyoUhei. Confirmed by Sports Hochi. Kudo, hailing from Iwaizumi-cho in Iwate prefecture, is notable for being the only sign-up from the three prefectures that were most devastated by the quake last year. Despite the jungyo meeting with Giku five or six years ago he actually hasn't done sumo for all that long, only since his first year at Morioka Agricultural HS (so less than three years). But the aptitude was clearly there - in his second year he won the prefectural prelim to the national rookie championships both on the individual side and in the group competition, and in year three he captained the school squad to a victory in the prefectural stage of the National Inter-High and thus their first appearance in the big event in 31 years. Unsurprisingly his first shikona will be Kotokudo.

Randomitsuki 2,843 Posted March 5, 2012 No special shikona for now, he'll be starting his career as plain old Yamaguchi. Well, the way collegiate rikishi have gone for the last decade I think they'd be aiming high just by expecting him to reach sekiwake... Especially considering that he won the Kokutai tournament with one hikiotoshi and four hatakikomi.

Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted March 6, 2012 (edited) Heaviest and tallest of the new recruits this basho is 18-year-old Kinjo Shota, of Dewanoumi-beya, who clocks in at 190cm and a meaty 179kg. He has zero sumo experience, having started to play baseball as a child and dreaming of becoming a professional baseball player. Somewhere along the way that dream ended - Google tells me he was hit in the first baseman, which sounds painful. Anyway, last year he competed in a sumo tournament in Utsunomiya, Tochigi prefecture. Approached by a Dewanoumi scout, Kinjo was introduced to Dekiyama-oyakata (ex-Dewanohana) and agreed to join the heya, despite having a job lined up in social services after his graduation from high school. Kinjo reckons he is still growing, height-wise, and given his fondness for cream desserts I reckon he's still growing weight-wise, too. He has a skinny younger brother. (I love the way they just lob these facts on at the end of an article) Edited March 6, 2012 by Yubinhaad

Naganoyama 5,947 Posted March 11, 2012 One of the height-challenged new recruits is an ex-speed skater, 19 year old 茅野 Kayano.(Kajino? Does he gamble?).He left school at the second year of Junior high but dreamed of being a rikishi since he was small. After seeing Ootake Oyakata on TV attempting to recruit new deshi, he decided to join his heya."It's a cheerful heya, and I would like to gradually add to my physical strength," he said. *no: Chino. Although he isn't wearing his chinos at the moment... I have the full data now but I haven't worked out how to post it.
Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted March 11, 2012 And fingers crossed that Kiyosato does enter, after all! Not on the list. (Shaking head...) Maybe next time. Nice to see Minezaki-beya getting a couple more new recruits. I think I'm right in saying that it is the only current heya which has yet to develop a sekitori since opening (which was in 1989). Raishu 208 Posted March 11, 2012 (edited) Three recruits from Nagano this time, nice. There haven't been that many Haru shin deshi from that place since 1993 (4). The French blog has shikona listed for the two Minezaki-beya recruits. Morooka is shown as Rikiyushi, while Yamamoto is shown as Oisato. Thanks - two fewer names I'll have to puzzle out from the juvenile yobidashi and gyoji voices later tonight and tomorrow. ;-) Also, there's some confusion on the Kyokai site as to whether the Naruto deshi's name is read Aragaki or Arakaki. That's probably getting fixed at some point. Edited March 11, 2012 by Asashosakari

Asashosakari 19,653 Posted March 12, 2012 Hamandoreiken seems like an unusual name. Ken Hamandley-Okawara. I'm lying, but it would be cool.. Ah, a double surname, that's also possible, especially with the haphazard way the Kyokai site transfers three-piece names from the Japanese to the English side. Probably Okawara-Hamandley then, though. :-) (And that's a Yubinhaad quote up there, not mine.)

Thanks for the semi-confirmation; that also dovetails with my notion that the shikona entry (with specifically entered kana reading) is more likely to be correct than the romanized name field.
