Natsu Basho 2012 - Discussion

Recommended Posts

I noticed that there isn't a discussion thread. So here it is.

Hell of a first day! Harumafuji toyed with the opponent, Baruto did some trolling and the only thing that makes me happier than seeing Hakuho lose is seeing Takanoyama win.

Chiyotairyu, what a gift this kid has! Owning makuuchi without even a topknot! That's crazy. 1 year of sumo to reach makuuchi..... you think Boody will do it too?

Either way, let's discuss the championship here.

Btw who are you rooting for? I`m Harumafuji all the way

For my own part i would like to see Baruto do well, i want to see him as Yokozuna! the odd thing i find about Sumo though is that i don't seem to have one favourite that i support above all others, i always feel relaxed when watching Sumo, i am able to be happy for whoever wins (usually) in a way that i cannot do for other sports.

I like watching good fights too, and I think the crowd feels the same way. The crowd will always applaud a valiant struggle or a very competitive match. This is why I'm a Harumafuji fan, he has beautiful technical sumo.

When I first started watching sumo I liked only one or two guys. As time has gone on I have found myself liking more and more rikishi, until now I find only one or two guys that I don't like. And even when I watch a rikishi that I don't like so much, if he does good Sumo and wins, then I am happy.

So did Aminishiki hand over one of his kensho envelopes to Kimura Shonosuke?

Well, Chiyotairyu did start in makushita, so he didn't have to go through the lower ranks like Boody will have to. This will add some time to Boody's rise, even if he is wildly successful in each basho and climbs quickly. Chiyotairyu also had 4 years of college sumo behind (which would be the equivalent of lower makushita IMO), so he came in with much of the skill required.

Despite beginning appearances Baruto made Toyonoshima look a little silly in the end. Great day one...

It'd be a really nice gesture if he did, but Ami probably needs the lot to pay his bandage bills - his right leg is now more bandage than leg!

Go Aminishiki! Back to Sekiwake and then on to Ozeki (wishful thinking)!

Of course I'm also interested in Chiyotairyu's rise. Do you think he'll grow a topknot by the time he reaches sanyaku?

What's wrong with Hakuho? How should a pretty normal pull attack set him off so easily? I remember the time of his big streak where he survived this sort of attack very often. In the bout I didn't see anything obvious.

Observe how he puts weight on his left foot/ankle during shikiri. It was injured during the last basho. He still seems to be favoring it.

It's the last thing what we all need - sumo without yokozuna. Degeiko time did'nt get any hints for this.

DONT TELL ME ABOUT HARUMAFUJI LOSING TO FREAKING GAGAMARU THAT WAS A ROBBERY

Check the video. Harumafuji was dragging his left heel along the edge of the dohyo. Anything other than the sole of the foot is verboten. The match was decided before anyone left the dohyo. Da rules is da rules.

Day 1, Takekaze against Sekiwake Goeido. Gyoji Shikimori Kandayu failed to announce the rikishi two times. He used the below sanyaku call of "Takekaze ni Goeido". Goeido is sanyaku so it should have been "Kataya Takekaze Takekaze Konata Goeido Goeido". Kandayu is only Makuuchi-kaku, not sanyaku, maybe this is the reason.

Kotooshu was utterly robbed today. And it is sad because he has shown some good sumo so far.

The judges need glasses...how was that bout NOT a mono-ii at least? The video judge might as well not turn up.

By the way, does this mythical video judge actually exist??

Speaking of utterly robbed, howzabout the Yamashita-Wakarikido bout on Day 2? AFAIR the most blatant case of...well, you'll see.

Unbelievable!

I wonder if he's being coached by Kisenosato. The shimpanzees never seem to notice his mattas either.

I don't even think Wakarikido intended to win that way, the gyoji and head shimpan were just unfathomably asleep there. Starts that are much less questionable routinely get called back in the lower divisions, I have no idea why this one wasn't.
