Jakusotsu 6,047 Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the summary. The strangest thing seems to be only 4 uwatenage wins in Juryo, but judging by the overall "quality" in Juryo this time, perhaps not that strange at all. (see tsukiotoshi and hikiotoshi for comparison) Edited May 21, 2012 by Jakusotsu
shumitto 418 Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) With some very good technicians gone for good (Kotomitsuki, Tochinonada, Kasugao, Kaio - in his good days) the ability of throwing has been replaced by that of pulling. Wakakoyu is the contemporary rikishi par excellence. I don't know what has been going on in the world of college sumo, but I see the latest generation has a penchant for hatakikomi, tsukiotoshi and related kimarite; vide Kimikaze, Chiyotairyu, Yamaguchi (small sample, yet I won't hold my breath that they will change). Jokoryu is better, though. It is very soon to tell and drawing any conclusion from three examples is tentative at best, however, this is the direction the kimarite evolution has been pointing to, if we take the past years. Universities don't like to look backward, it seems. B-) Edited May 22, 2012 by shumitto
Achiyama 1,246 Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) Thank you, Yubinhaad, for the wonderful thread you have started about the kimarite used. I have one suggestion. As I am pretty new (only 2-3 years) to the Sumoforum and I am learning every day new things, I think it will be a good idea if you hyperlink the name of the kimarite with a description of the kimarite. There are nice descriptions on the website "Goo Sumo" - "Information" - "Kimarite Menu", if you can link them to your thread. Or maybe there are other sources describing the kimarite. It will be easier for the newest sumo fans to get acquainted with the different kimarite. Best Regards, Achiyama Edited May 30, 2012 by Achiyama
Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) Thanks Achiyama. That's a good idea - I've added links to the Kyokai's (English) kimarite pages. :-) Edited May 30, 2012 by Yubinhaad
Koukai 4 Posted May 31, 2012 You can use this topic (or this one) to watch most kimarite video examples.
Kintamayama 45,503 Posted May 31, 2012 (edited) You can use this topic (or this one) to watch most kimarite video examples. I think the coolest thing on earth and beyond would be if Yubin could link these videos to the various kimarite (if they are available, of course)- a lot of work, I know, but it would be totally awesome. <bow> Edited May 31, 2012 by Kintamayama

Or am I an idiot?

That's not mutually exclusive, is it? ;-) You probably mean this site.. Does anybody feel like recreating the old romaji frontend to those animations? Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted May 31, 2012 I seem to remember there being a fantastic little site that had animations of each kimarite, not just pictures. Or am I an idiot? That's not mutually exclusive, is it? ;-) You probably mean this site.. Does anybody feel like recreating the old romaji frontend to those animations? I downloaded all these and was debating with myself if I should link the kimarite to these animations. Problem is of course that these aren't my own - I tried to contact the creator, but no answer. Maybe I should just go ahead.
Achiyama 1,246 Posted May 31, 2012 (edited) Thanks, Yubinhaad, for linking the kimarite names with the descriptions. Thanks, Koukai, for your links. They are interesting (it's good that I know Russian :-)). I liked Doitsuyama's animations (triggered by Pandaazuma). I'd suggest to leave Yubinhaad's descriptions as they are, but put some symbol (like the videoclips on the Sumo Reference pages, KUDOS to the person(s) responsible for that) and hyperlink the symbol to the animation. I'd extend a little bit, why not put a 3rd symbol and hyperlink this symbol to videoclips of real life sumo bouts, demonstrating the corresponding kimarite. This might take some time, but all 3 things together will be very educational. Finally, I'd suggest (of course it is the Rijicho's final decision) on the Front page, in the "Sumo Information Pond" to be created a forum "Kimarite" and when the next basho starts Yubinhaad's thread to be moved from the "Honbasho Talk" into the "Kimarite" forum. I saw that in the Sumo Information forum there is a thread started in 2002 by Manekineko and stopped in 2005. This could be moved there, too. Thanks to everybody who participated in this discussion and provided more links for me to visit and educate myself. :-) Regards, Achiyama Edited May 31, 2012 by Achiyama
