Fukurou 534 Posted July 23, 2012 Related to the Kotooshu kyujo discussion, could the Nagoya basho have revealed they key to Kotooshu's seemingly every basho collapse? Participating in a basho with a broken foot didn't seem to bother Kotooshu too much. He completed the basho, and had 9 wins (with wins over 2 of the 4 ozeki he faced). I assume he had to concentrate quite a bit about what he was doing in order to compete with the injury. Setting aside sympathy for his situation (practically forced to participate because he withdrew on day 15 in May), could it be that he's easily distracted, which eventually leads to him falling apart at the end? Could his main problem is that he just needs to concentrate more on what he's doing on the dohyo?
Kuroyama 715 Posted July 23, 2012 I think it's generally accepted that his main problem is mental, not physical, but I'm always wary of psychoanalyzing people from a distance.
shumitto 418 Posted July 23, 2012 (edited) ... but I'm always wary of psychoanalyzing people from a distance. While I second that, I would like to add that Kotooshu seems to aim for survival only. As long as his permanence is guaranteed for the next basho, it is good for him and he doesn't bother to do more. Could his main problem is that he just needs to concentrate more on what he's doing on the dohyo? To what gain ? 10 or 11 wins pro basho will maintain him just where he is, while a Yokozuna promotion is not on the cards. botev1921 33 Posted July 24, 2012 It is pretty obvious he has no aspirations to become yokozuna, so what's the point in pushing too hard. This might shorten his Ozeki career!
