New kesho mawashi

Recommended Posts

Tomokaze on the 2nd at the Seto lodgings of the heya got a maneki-neko kesho-mawashi by mother and daughter artists Chabo and Hiromi Arita http://ome-nekomachi.com/, mother Chabo does the cuddy toy part, daughter Hiromi the ink painting. Last year the 2 got the top prize at the yearly (since 1999maneki-neko exhibition in Seto https://www.furoneko.com/manekineko100/artworklist/.  For this year they want to have sumo related items on display and thought of giving this one to Oguruma-beya, who stays there. They produced the very unorthodox (almost real) kesho mawashi in 1 month, Hiromi did the embroidery. The title of this artwork is  いただきます "Itadakimasu" - unfortunately it is not made for use at the basho, just to fulfill the dream of the artists to have a real rikishi put it on. http://www.chunichi.co.jp/article/aichi/20190703/CK2019070302000049.htm

the cat is luring sumo style, by presenting food: a big omusubi (an onigiri), coming out of a fusuma door. The design below with the tassels represents rice ears in an abundant harvest.

Kotonowaka II yesterday got the traditional Saitama Sakae high kesho mawashi for juryo promotion from head coach Yamada - the 20th orange one the school gave to an OB. He aims to get the 2nd one as well, that for ozeki promotion - that might be the 3rd by the school then.

Enho today got a visit from Koto-san, who designed the new kesho mawashi he has used at the dohyo-iri for the first time on this day 6. Koto-san is an artist sponsored by a support organization due to a development disorder. The organization had set sports as subject for their SOMPO Paralym Art Cup in February. The idea to design and give a kesho mawashi to a rikishi came up, in corporation with a sponsor of Miyagino-beya it led to this one for Enho 炎鵬, the phoenix 鵬 in flames炎

Enho had invited her for today and definitely wanted to win - she saw a splendid kainahineri against Yago. He was surprised to actually meet an acquaintance from teaching practice at a middle school attached to his Kanazawa gakuin university.

The question that crossed my mind was: did Ami-chan (as fans sometimes call him) get a chance to wear this new keshomawashi before he withdrew (potentially retired)? (Weeping...)

fyi, I appreciate all your hard work, the pics threads in particular.  Sadly, there are so many other things that I pay attention to during any given tournament, that I usually don't get around to reviewing those threads until after each tournament.  Please forgive me.

Despite my ignorance, I was merely trying to draw attention to the shame of such a valuable artefact being made, and only getting limited exposure.  Next step: Sumo Museum at best.

Kotonowaka II today at the jungyo in Murayama, Yamagata - the home pref. of father Kotonowaka - with the new kesho mawashi he got for juryo promotion from Oh-ban Holdings, a Yamagata pref. based supermarket chain. The company president (on the left) is the head of the Sadogatake-beya koenkai http://www.oh-ban.com/sumo/

Yamagata is the nation's largest benibana producer - the kesho mawashi shows this flower. The oyakata also got one like this for juryo promotion from his hometown Obanazawa city.

New juryo Asagyokusei received a kesho mawashi from his Kindai high school mentor, which simply shows the motto of Mr. Okutani: 志固精 (not to be found in dictionaries - from the kanji it means devotion with firm will). Tamaki is the first rikishi Okutani had raised as coach. http://this.kiji.is/542316186391774305

Saitama Sakae High should develop an electronic loom or 3D printer to churn out all the keshomawashi that they inevitably have to present their graduates!! ;-)

This kesho mawashi is for the product Shark Bay salt  sold as Ako no amashio (natural salt), salt from Australia produced the way of Ako natural salt - since salt has profound connections with sumo.

Nice little bit of a connection for Western Australia and sumo. Living here in WA, this is something that could've been celebrated a bit, but as we have a new direct flight to Narita from Perth with ANA, this is something that we could maybe use to publicise those flights, as well as Shark Bay.

Seing the kesho-mawashi of Takanofuji, i wonder what happens with them, because they are hardly used. Given the prices of even basic kesho-mawashi, it looks like a huge waste of money.

I think heya tend to hang onto a few for mae-zumo purposes and such. Not sure though.

Then all kesho mawashi for those who made it to juryo just for 1 or 2 basho are a waste. These belong to Takanofuji and he may decorate his future shop with it - or even sell them on the net.

Thanks, a long lurking question answered. I expected at least some of the school/university standard-mawashi to go back after one-time use.

Next for Kotonowaka II, a kesho mawashi from Kurayoshi, the hometown of grandpa Kotozakura. It shows of course plenty of sakura blooming, also pine trees, in front of the local Utsubukiyama (204m, thus a bit small to call it Mt.), beneath a blue sky - with some Utsubuki park dango as well wiki/打吹公園だんご, famous local sweets kouendango.com/. The Tottori pref. sakura friends association had asked the citizens and corporations for donations to make it. Yesterday at the heya was the presentation. He plans to use it in the doyho-iri from days 1 to 5. https://www.nnn.co.jp/news/191224/20191224003.html
