New kesho mawashi

Recommended Posts

Interestingly, the Wikipedia page for Teshikaga mentions only one Notable Person from the town: Kotogatake Koichi, sumo wrestler.  In Taiho's Wiki page, it mentions Teshikaga as his home town (after moving from Sakhalin).

At least Taiho is still listed on Teshikaga’s Japanese wikipedia entry.

The image on the kesho mawashi seems a bit abstract to me. Anyone know what the three different shapes represent?

Supposedly, they represent two lakes in the town. The designer of the keshomawashi heard a schoolgirl say that the large lake looked like Taiho performing a dohyo iri, and the small one looked like Oho watching. Then the bird shape is the Peng, the bird that makes up the -ho part of their shikona.

Thanks for the wonderful explanation. I can get behind the two lakes and even the bird shape. I’m having a hard time seeing a dohyo-iri, but it wasn’t designed for me. Despite my lack of modern art understanding, it’s still a beautiful kesho mawashi.

Kinoshita last year had shown a map with the 2 lakes to  a middle school girl related to the heya, and she said: "Lake Kussharo looks like Taiho at the yokozuna dohyo-iri, and Lake Mashuu like the face of Konosuke watching this." Getting this surprising hint made him decide on the design. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20201125/sum20112518510006-n2.html

the map

with Lake Kussharo as this part of the yokozuna dohyo-iri

The shadow of the big bird (=Taiho) flying above, with the edge of the wing in the picture, is also meant to form the kanji 大 dai of Taiho, in the same dohyo-iri pose: the darker shadow with the lower edge of the lake and the tail of the bird as the legs

Slightly off topic:

I know that Makuuchi and Juryo rikishi wear kesho-mawashi for their division's respective dohyo-iri ceremonies. When a Makushita division rikishi is called up to participate in the Juryo torikumi, do those Makushita rikishi also participate in the Juryo division dohyo-iri?  Not sure if I have ever seen this mentioned before.

If so, I assume they would wear a borrowed kesho-mashi (or their own if they are former sekitori).

No. They are just visiting juryo. All they get is the fancy hairdo.

To complete the point, juryo visitors to makuuchi still participate in their own dohyo-iri and not the makuuchi dohyo-iri. The kesho-mawashi is for the purpose of the dohyo-iri and a sekitori symbol. Ergo, makushita rikishi do not get kesho-mawashi nor do they appear in the juryo dohyo-iri, and continue wrestling in their black mawashi and floppy sagari; the oichomage is a form of divisional respect as it were.

Thanks!

Follow-up question.

When a Juryo rikishi is called up to take part in the Makuuchi torikumi, do they participated in the Juryo dohyo-iri or the Makuuchi dohyo-iri? Based on the answer re Makushita rikishi, I am going to guess the Juryo one, but... ?

OOPS, ninja'ed.

Takanosho for sanyaku debut from a koenkai related person got a kesho mawashi with himself as original mascot character, designed by a friend: named NOBUDOG after his real and shikona first name Nobuaki, a Shiba-inu. Takanosho loves dogs, is born in a year of the dog and appropriately: "I want to run around (the dohyo)."

He plans to use it at the dohyo-iri starting on nakabi (day 8).

Hopefully pics of the complete kesho mawashi will appear before that. Maybe he brings it to NHK for the new sanyaku interview.

Asanoyama gets a new kesho mawashi from the Anekurahime shrine near his parents house, where Asanoyama as sekitori each year came to pray on New Year's day. On a dark green background, the Tateyama mountain range in the bright morning sunlight and in front the houou  鳳凰 forcefully flapping its wings. With the ozeki reserved purple tassels and fringe.

The kesho mawashi will get a purification ritual on New Year's day, adore the shrine tabernacle till the 4th and then will be delivered to the heya.

What was Terunofuji wearing today for day 15? It looked just solid black. I didn’t get a great view from the tv image, but it looked like there was something in it with a different texture.

Nope, but here, although the pictures don't work

Speaking of black...a vanta black kesho mawashi would be awesome.

I don't see anything about it on page 6 of this thread. It's talked about on page 11. It's too bad the photos from the older posts don't seem to work anymore.

It is an all black replica of the Terunofuji kesho mawashi on page 6. At least that page still has a working photo.

It is not black, but dark blue. And his shikona is written on it:

The new kesho mawashi for Takakento from his high school, Tottori Johoku, was presented to the public today. It shows the head of a kirin, as used in the local traditional kirin lion dance, on a dark red background, the school's symbol color. Headmaster Ishiura: "Fortunately it is in time for the haru basho. With the hope he may soar up like in the kirin lion dance." http://www3.nhk.or.jp/lnews/tottori/20210309/4040007496.html
