New kesho mawashi

Recommended Posts

Name of the person is 七條 (on which I commented) not 七条 (for which you are giving the example). Even though it (条)is simplified version of the same character(條), sometimes different writing as it is with Watanabe, for example, have different historical backgrounds. In this case, both names read the same, but the sumotori's has a different origin of the name.  Moreover, only half of these names with 条 come from Kyoto. The same goes for 小路 - very few of the names stem from Kyoto

I still don't quite understand your argument. Where is this 七條 coming from then? As far as I can tell the name is most concentrated in Tokushima, which aligns with the second origin entry in 七条, with an place name origin in Tokushima that has ties to Kyōto.

For -小路, by my count from that page, it's 16/53 disregarding the variations.

Day 1 of the Haru Basho and many rikishi sported new kesho mawashi.

Shimanoumi with a JoJo inspired one apparetly.

rX6WSwq.jpg

Shin-Ozeki Mitakeumi used his new one he got from the head of the Osaka koenkai of Dewanoumi-beya.

BePOBMi.jpg

Shin-Juryo Atamifuji sported a very fancy red and white kesho mawashi with a mountain motiff (obvioulsy). (Sorry for the quality of second photo, I took a screenshot of the Abema coverage).

Also shin-Juryo Shimazuumi's kesho mawashi (I'm sure this design has some sort of significance probably to his shusshin but I'm not so good in that department to understand it).

If you know more new kesho mawashi that I didn't get, please add to this discussion! And if you understand more about the designs and motiffs of the kesho mawashi I presented here, please share it with us! (I'm still a realtive newbie at this, I would love to learn how to search more for info in the japanese-speaking sources).

Yes, it's from his hometown koenkai in Nishinoomote on Tanegashima, the character seems to be a city mascot (and holds a matchlock gun, also known as a tanegashima).

Also visible are some Anno potatoes, which he asked to be included as they are cultivated by his parents.

In the past days, Shimazuumi used another kesho mawashi:

ler709N.jpg

I should also say that he used on Day 11 a white kesho mawashi but I didn't found a good enough picture of it other than this one:

Also Atamifuji did indeed receive the Hiryu High traditional kesho mawashi, again the photo is extremely pixalated so a more detailed photo accompaning is Midorifuji's Hiryu High kesho mawashi. Again, sorry for the quality of the photos, I will keep looking for better ones in the next days, I just find important to document these.

Wakamotoharu for makuuchi promotion will get a kesho mawashi from the local Onami 3 brothers koenkai, the design is from one of grandfather Wakabayama, a lion dance depicted on a dark blue fabric. o

At last the kesho mawashi is ready - Wakamotoharu used it today, tomorrow is the death anniversary of Wakabayama o

The father with the kesho mawashi of Wakabayama - side note: at a recent interview Wakamotoharu denied that he'd take that shikona, Wakatakakage may use it for ozeki promotion o

Kotokuzan received not one but two new kesho mawashi in advance for Natsu.

The first one was given by Ariake Harbor company, a passenger ship company based in Yokohama, which is Kotokuzan's shusshin (Kanagawa-ken, Yokohama-shi). The design is based on official artwork from the cruise ships.

DpCnkox.jpg

The second one was given by Kate of Tokyo Co. Ltd., which I understand is a beauty company that sells the products of other smaller companies related to beauty and fitness (Foodizm is one of those companies, it produces plant-based foods). Kotokuzan received it because of a school-times contact that he had at Kate of Tokyo. The eagle is a philippine eagle, national bird of The Philippines (he was born in the Philippines, but his official shusshin is Kanagawa-ken), and the background is the rising sun of the japanese flag.

Apparently I was very wrong of the donor, my poor japanese skills didn't help. From the Tachiai blog post about it, it is actually from a confectionary maker, called Ariake, and the artwork is from the Yokohama Harbour World line of sweets.

I completely misunderstood and mistranslated the initial japanese news, and I am sorry, I will try and improve my japanese skills.

It shows Nerimaru, the official mascot character of Nerima ward, where Tochimaru is from - it's from his local Nerima koenkai. People tell him: "Looks similar"  http://hochi.news/articles/20220508-OHT1T51132.html

The Tokitsukaze pair Shodai and Yutakayama today came to the dohyo-iri with kesho mawashi from confectionery maker Fujiya, showing their characters Peko and Poko. The connection to Fujiya is that several graduates of Yutakayama's university Tonodai are employed there. http://hochi.news/articles/20220508-OHT1T51173.html

Tochimaru's second kesho mawashi is from his high school, Adachi Shinden High School, the same one that Chiyotairyu frequented.
