Did the name of the university change under international pressure?

Under international laughter

On another note, just seen this on Wikipedia:

Quote

The English name of university had been Kinki University since its establishment in 1949 to refer to "the surrounding area of the capital city (Kyoto)". On May 20, 2014, the university announced that its English name would officially change to Kindai (近大?), to avoid the implications of the word "kinky", as the university is planning to globalize with the establishment of a new Foreign Language school. The name change took effect on April 1, 2016.

Yes; there is a Japanese male pop duo (SImon-and-Garfunkel type group) with the name "Kinki Kids."  Unsettling if you don't know the derivation.

Shimanoumi on the 7th got the standard kesho-mawashi from his (Kinki) university - now always Kindai. The 5th active rikishi to have one, following (Homarefuji), Takarafuji, Tokushoryu and Asanoyama - Tokushoryu  can be seen in one from time to time.

I'm really a bit sloppy in remembering details: actually all 4 Kindai sekitori appeared in the dohyo-iri in the university kesho-mawashi the first 2 days - I guess it's a tradition to use it every basho at least once (or only in Osaka as their home basho)  - I don't think those from other universities (or high schools like Saitama Sakae) are that constant - the other standard kesho-mawashi  aren't equally distinctive though.

I don't mean to use any profane language on this family friendly forum, but in my language, Kindai means "Get yourself f***** in the a**". Good thing nobody speaks Baluchi in Japan.

I believe there is also a gyoji name with Kindai in it. If the ending is pronounced with a nasal sound (Kin da innn), it would mean "This person gets f***** in the a**".

My humble apologies if this post violates any forum rules. I can assure you this post was made with a purely linguistic focus.

Shikimori Kindayu would better stay in Japan, should there be a kaigai koen / overseas jungyo in the area - or was that one  reason for one recent plan not realized

I noticed today that both Shodai and Nishikigi entered with Kesho-mawashi that featured both the Japanese and Mongolian flags. Does anybody know the story behind those and perhaps who sponsored them? I thoughts its interesting that Japanese rikishi wear these.

I did not get a screenshot, and cannot find a picture of these online. Sorry.

It's because they are doing the dohyou-iri next to Kakuryu so they have matching mawashi with him.

Mitakeumi got one from his middle school - Takakeisho will get a kesho-mawashi from his Ninagawa Gakuin primary school. A preparation school for Tokyo university, with plenty of wealthy OBs, who have formed a Takakeisho Ninagawa koenkai end of last year. N-sta had an image at 4:48h of how it likely will look: http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc428280/

In the dark blue school color, with the school emblem and name  仁川学院 https://www.nigawa.ac.jp/images/common/n-logo-sc.svg

He will get in in May, for the Natsu basho.

Ishiura got a new kesho mawashi from the Brasiian jiu-jitsu dojo Carpe Diem in Jiyugaoka (most fitting place in Tokyo - they have 2 more in Japan, 13 locations worldwide) - and he'd rather seize the day next basho or really drop to juryo. With the logo, his shikona 石浦 and the phrase in Japanese: 今を生きる  ima wo ikiru - live now. By introduction of a supporter, he came to know the sensei of the dojo while in jonokuchi and also trained there, in the No-Gi class (without dougi).

His son turned 1 on the 2nd and he'd like him to remember his father as doing sumo in the kokugikan - he himself has no recollection of his father's active career in ama-zumo (now the head coach of Tottori high).

IMHO, Ishiura's kimono design outshines the keshomawashi design!  Is that supposed to be Kira Yoshinaka's decapitated head?

I agree that the kimono is more memorable than the mawashi. I'm not sure that I would say that it outshines it however, maybe that it it is more striking!

Cheers, Getayukata

I think we have a new record number of pics for a kesho mawashi presentation - Takakeisho has inherited in full the popularity of Kisenosato

Kiribayama got his 3rd kesho mawashi: from the head of the Michinoku-beya koenkai and NWI holdings, trade partner of the Italian jewelry brand MIMI - with a black cockatoo as the MIMI logo, holding in its beak a FREE VOLA butterfly necklace for 660 000 Yen (plus tax). Maybe Kiribayama got the real one cheap: a present for his mother on Mother's day. The 4th kesho mawashi is in the making.

Takakeisho

For ozeki promotion he will get a 2nd kesho-mawashi from his high school Saitama Sakae, like Goeido did - with the school emblem, but in a color he likes - the standard one for juryo promotion is in the school color. Goeido got a black one.

Takakeisho selected ozeki purple as the background color for his 2nd kesho mawashi from Saitama-Sakae high.

This keshomawashi is featured on Chiyootori's instagram page, but during the recent Summer Tournament, it was Chiyomaru who wore it in the daily Top Division dohyoiri.  Chiyootori was in the Makushita Division and hence had no opportunity to wear it.  Apparently, stablemates - not to mention brothers - are comfortable in sharing their keshomawashi.

P.S., You can't tell from the photos, but the truck really sparkles in the light.

Like the one for Kise, it is a hand woven tsuzure-ori keshō-mawashi for about 3 million yen, only allowed for ozeki and above.

Aminishiki is still receiving new kesho-mawashi in the autumn of his career, this one was presented at Isegahama-beya's pre-basho encouragement party. Paying homage to his home prefecture of Aomori is an apple and a warrior figure which is paraded through Aomori during the Nebuta Matsuri, an annual summer festival. Also, his family's fishing background is represented by the rough sea, a squid and a salmon. The embroidery of the design was done by artist Moko Kobayashi.
