How far reaches your east? Takanoyama? (A brave rikishi...)

"East" Europeans is kinda unneccessarily specific. It just rubs it in that there aren't any West Europeans in sumo. But actually, I think the Czech Republic is in Central Europe (and Georgia of course in the Caucasus which really isn't very European - it's more the history).

I don't see a particular mystery. Three are out with injury, three are out of their depth.

Amelia (Earhurt) can't really be judged by this basho due to his inexperience and the training he missed beforehand due to the ear problem.

Love it.

Hope that one takes off!

The definition of Eastern Europe is more politically- and economically-oriented than anything else, I guess. So it is fine to place the Czech Republic into it. As to sumo, all but Baruto are ranked too high for their own good. In the next basho, with most of them swimming in calmer waters and probably having better results, you will entitle your thread "Europeans on FIRE".

My theory for the ozeki injuries is that now with Hakuho looking more and more defeatable and with the banzuke quite messed up, people are fighting to the max, which they haven't done in a while.

... and with the banzuke quite messed up ...

What do you mean?

I mean that the disparity betwen the ozeki and the lower ranks, especially the komusubi, seems to grow more and more, and I suppose some of the ozeki think of this as an opportune moment for an ozeki run. At least Kisenosato seems to fight all out and definitely hopes for a run.

On a second thought, this is not really a problem of the banzuke, besides, "messed up" might not be the most accurate wording.

Komusubi is a meatgrinder rank. Any rikishi who can spend more than a year in Makuuchi will make it to komusubi through banzuke luck. Once there, 80% of them will be ground to a pulp.

Interesting thought. In a way, I think, it's just a reflection of having a bunch of ozeki who are, bar Osh, all in or approaching their prime, unlike the last half-decade with Kaio/Chiyotaikai/Kotomitsuki as the faces of the rank. Having 7 top-rankers (perhaps soon 8 if Myogiryu keeps it up) who are clearly superior to the rest of the field might be a bit on the high side, but the level of dominance in itself isn't abnormal, I would say.

To extend your notion that the ozeki are seeing an opportunity now - maybe it's all in the scheduling? When Kise/Giku/Kaku were still sekiwake, we could expect to see many of their matches against ozeki in the first week (and almost all until Day 10), which made it much harder for an ozeki to put together a strong start and maybe get into that yusho-chasing groove. Now the scheduling protects the most deserving 7 rikishi from each other until the second week and the dynamic of the basho seems to be completely different.

Hakuho being mortal now definitely helps, too, I agree. But I think it's also a morale booster to the ozeki to know they can now start 8-1 or so and be in a real yusho race, instead of finding themselves with two early losses against tough opponents and have to chase down Hakuho (who's getting the most protected schedule of them all, after all) for 10+ days.
