Sasanishiki 57 Posted May 19, 2004 I'm here to comfort you and tell you that I don't care either. I can't see it, I'm not from Europe. I have no sense of nationalism stirred by a pop song of dubious quality. Why does this contest attract so much attention? From what I've seen in the past the songs are suually terrible!! Tokimori 0 Posted May 19, 2004 I care a lot! I really liked Serbia Montenegro's song. I think it's a wonderful spectacle and wouldn't miss it for the world. :-P I think that I'm in a minority in this forum though. And yes, Sakis was pretty good. He was 4th or 5th in my list. Not better than his third place though.
Naifuzan 1 Posted May 20, 2004 It's a pretty big deal in swedish media as well. I myself couldn't care less. I like almost all kinds of music, except for pop. My little brother is a huge fan tho. He sings karaoke to the songs from the swedish competition all the time :-P
Jesinofuji 11 Posted May 20, 2004 There was a song contest in Europe? :-P
Takamueda 0 Posted May 20, 2004 The Greek and the Swedish song were my favourites when I saw the song (And Max of course, although he sang very poorly). I didn't like the song from Serbia&Montenegro, so I was surprised seeing them on place #2. In Germany Max was nearly the only name the persons in the media spoke of. "The best German song since years", "He has good chances to win"... Everybody was disappointed about his 8th place, but I wasn't remembering Corinna May and Lou who got the places 17 and 21 in the last 2 years.
aderechelsea 125 Posted May 20, 2004 i would suspect Swedish members to care about this contest more ...... i heard most of the songs (whether i wanted it or not) and i have to say the Turkish song was closer to my taste in music....it wasn't even pop. at least it starts to fade in interest here ...... in a week i think everybody will forget about it and i will find my peace..... (Cheers...)
Fujisan 533 Posted May 20, 2004 The eurovision song contest is a farce, theres no other way to put it. Very few countries vote for the best song, they vote for their compatriot countries and if you haven't figured that out, then your probably convinced Santa claus exists aswell. Tokimori 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Very few countries vote for the best song, they vote for their compatriot countries and if you haven't figured that out, then your probably convinced Santa claus exists aswell. People in Balkan have the same cultural influences. That's why they vote for balkan music. Nothing strange with that. Same thing with every cultural area all over Europe. There is always somewhat of an unity over the best songs that aren't from your near countries. There are always some songs that are liked in almost all countries. They get 6-8 points in all the votes, except their compratiot countries. These songs win. (Cheers...) I think that it is good for Europe that the western cultural values isn't always the best. It is an analogy with the widening of the European Union! (Sign of approval) Ok, maybe I'm reading too much into this... But I am a ESC freak! (Cheers...) aderechelsea 125 Posted May 20, 2004 Norway's crappy song took zero points from all the countries and had to wait for Sweden to get their only points.I cannot believe this was for "same taste" in music..... (Cheers...) we got 12 points from friendly or neighbouring countries and from England that is the home of Vodafone , Sakis Rouvas's main sponsor..... :-D . before every contest i know that we are going to get 12 points from Cyprus as we will do the same...... Ukraine took 12 points from all the ex-Soviet Union countries and their neighbours.Their song was not THAT good ...... (Cheers...)
Tokimori 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Why not, aderechelsea? Are you a specialist in Swedish music taste? (Cheers...) Ukraine's song was good, absolutely. Why did it otherwise get so many points from countries outside the former Soviet Union? The 12-pointers are always the same in many countries, I know. But they are not the important votes. The important votes are the 6-10p from countries far away.
aderechelsea 125 Posted May 20, 2004 yeah but if this happens every time then Spain for example will never win because it doesn't get 12 points for free by anyone..... picking up 6-8 points from every country will get them nowhere. Greece for example took points from all the countries but lost due to lack of many 12-pointers. (good thing we lost though because i couldn't stand the fiestas here.....) Tokimori 0 Posted May 20, 2004 I don't agree with you. :-) Greece didn't get 12-pointers because their song was not as good as Serbia or Ukraine. Sweden gave Serbia 12 and Ukraine 10. You can't really say that depended on closeness to their countries. But yes, there is probably a slight advantage to come from a country with many neighbouring countries. You still have to have a good song to win this. At least a better song than the rest... :-)
Kashunowaka 300 Posted May 20, 2004 Ok, maybe I'm reading too much into this... But I am a ESC freak! :-) And here Aderechelsea thought I was brave for defending Asanowaka. :-)

Kintamayama 45,095 Posted May 20, 2004 (edited) But yes, there is probably a slight advantage to come from a country with many neighbouring countries. You still have to have a good song to win this. At least a better song than the rest... :-) OTOH, we won it three times(back to back once) and we don't have a single neighboring country in the contest (Cyprus isn't exactly neighboring and never gives us points, like Greece) and we are not really very popular in Europe in all aspects.. Yet, three times.. Nevertheless, since the splitting up of the USSR and Yugoslavia, it's become a bad joke, IMHO, since they are actually voting for themselves while voting for each other.. Edited May 20, 2004 by Kintamayama
Tokimori 0 Posted May 20, 2004 Kintamayama: Exactly! That shows that it's not impossible to win no matter how few neighbouring countries you have.

Manekineko 200 Posted May 20, 2004 One - I don't care much about Erovision song contest Two - I didn't like the Ukranian song, and that is the only one I heard Three - didn't Serbian emmigration in Sweden vote for their song? At least the "Swedish" commentator that announced the votes was of Serbian heritage, and said "Srbija i Crna Gora" perfectly. ;-) Four - I don't care much about Erovision song contest, so I'll end this here. I'm only semi sorry I haven't heard the Serbian song, since you say it was good...

Hmm, so you mean the 12 points Spain got from Andorra were hard earned?... (Oops! ) yeah ok........ wrong choice of country but even that makes my point that countries vote the good songs rarely but rather prefer their "friends"......
