It's Official! Harumafuji is the 70th Yokozuna!

Recommended Posts

I remember watching sumo on eurosport back in the day and the commentator sometimes referrred to him as "Little Ama"....

Little Ama has now become the "Big Harumafuji".

Maybe a silly question, but is the fish of the same kind as used by an ozeki promotion?

Red sea bream, the standard celebratory fish.

I hoped for a shikona-change to amayama. B-)

Good luck Harumafuji!

Or... Haruma-zuna! (I made that one up all by myself...)

Sounds logic... that's why they always use the paper to hold that smelly fish.

He always be Ama to me. When I am cheering him on at a basho, I can't bring myself to yell Harumafuji; it's always Ama. Of course, no need to cheer him on as much I guess, as he isn't supposed to the underdog anymore..

I felt the same way about about Akebono and could only bring myself to yell Taikai. Afterall, he kept it so much more real under that shikona.... ;-)

I am sure he was not serious. If it was, they'd have made a perfectly copied plastic food replica by now anyway it's the Japanese way. :-)

Tospo speculates about Harumafuji becoming Japanese national. His wife said they also consider this option.

Being married to a Mongolian woman, at first it seems natural that they return to Mongolia after intai.

Hakuho and Kotooshu are said to have declared the intention to become oyakata, both married to a Japanese.

Kakuryu also showed interest in becoming oykata, Baruto is likely to to return to Estonia and e.g. engage in managing a farm.

Harumafuji has fallen ill and missed asageiko today. His chronic ear problems are acting up, says the report. He had a severe headache as a result of the blocked ear, causing him to got to the hospital for a checkup. It also could be a result of fatigue as a result of the various functions he had to attend these last few days in his new capacity as a Yokozuna. "I'm OK. I'm used to it. I will be training tomorrow," he said. "Pus accumulates in his ear about 3-4 times a year.. He will have to control it himself," said Isegahama Oyakata.

. "Pus accumulates in his ear about 3-4 times a year.. He will have to control it himself," said Isegahama Oyakata.

Huh? I sincerely hope there was something lost in translation here. I don't get it. Both sentences... Either way, a blocked ear is certainly out of his control, and if its an infection, like, it's his fault?

Did this quote go through the usual Japanese-Hungarian-Esperanto-Punjabi-English route?

Damn you, Babelfish!

Translation correct. I don't use machine translators, that's why I screw up here and there and everywhere. He doesn't mean that Harumafuji has to operate on himself or something-just that he has to take care of it himself, i.e. take the medication. Nobody is faulting him. Since it's chronic, the Oyakata is sure the new Yokozuna knows how to deal with it.

Harumafuji has fallen ill and missed asageiko today. His chronic ear problems are acting up, says the report.

Now they are calling it a pimple or even a small tumor (didn't he have one of those a few months ago?). "It hurts inside the ear.." he said.

A cyst, maybe? Those are quite common in people with chronic ear infections...

Actually, having personal experience of this condition, it is possible that quite a few of his ups and downs in power levels can be attributed to it, it tends to cause low level fever over periods of weeks, which should cause a lot of trouble in an athlete...
