Bugman 384 Posted November 25, 2012 (edited) I'm curious to know what bouts stick in your mind the most from the past, i have a very short career as a Sumo fan so the bout that excited me the most was very recent, day 15 of the March basho this year when Hakuho took on kakuryu, i was seriously pumped for that one and it's just stuck there in my mind as the most exciting i have experienced. i'd love to know what bouts stick in your mind as epic or especially memorable. Here's the Hakuho-Kakuryu bout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87FftEBmXzc Edited November 25, 2012 by Bugman
Akinomaki 40,777 Posted November 25, 2012 The bout which sticks in my mind the most is this last yusho for the injured Takanohana in the playoff against Musashimaru, with the devil face he makes after the win. The one Koizumi himself presented the prime ministers cup and said he was deeply moved that Taka had endured it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnELKB4ldSc The most fond bout would rather be the first yusho by Konishiki.
Naganoyama 5,948 Posted November 25, 2012 (edited) My favourite bout, for emotional rather than technical reasons, was Kyokutenho's yusho play-off win http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UIZ3k1jJdM Actually, it is more to me than just a bout, it is one of my all-time favourite achievements in sport. shumitto 418 Posted November 25, 2012 Aminishiki circled around Kaio and defeated him by okuridashi, back in Natsu 2007. It was the first recollection I have of how much skill there is or can be in the sport. Maybe if I watched it again today it wouldn't look as amazing as it did the first time but that was my impression.
Mukonoso 273 Posted November 25, 2012 (edited) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALboAIaleTo&feature=colike I like this one because I've never seen a move like this before in sumo. The last match I can remember that shocked me this much was one back in the very early 90s (can't remember who) where one rikishi leapfrogged over another at the charge. Kaikitsune Makoto 209 Posted November 25, 2012 (edited) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq3o0qdY7T4 Kaio clinching his 3rd yusho in Nagoya 2001 beating yokozuna Musashimaru with his trademark powerful uwatenage on day 14. My ultimate favourite and great come back after severe back problems in Natsu 2001 (making him kadoban in Nagoya). Jakusotsu 6,049 Posted November 26, 2012 (edited) My first time ever in the Kokugikan, and Kyokutenho hoisted Asashoryu out with tsuridashi - ah, sweet memories... http://www.banzuke.com/~movies/natsu2004/day11/asashor_kyokuten.rm (and the pain sitting in the rafters with no zabuton to throw) Edited November 26, 2012 by Jakusotsu
Azumashida 1 Posted November 26, 2012 One of my favorite bouts is at 13:12 in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7rARRegtqY (Kotomitsuki had never faced any joi-jin until that point, and he got to face Yokozuna Musashimaru on day 11 of Kyushu 2000 while both were at 9-1 and aiming for the lead in the yusho race... unbelievable bout - I then realized that Kotomitsuki was the real thing)
Maguroyama 27 Posted November 26, 2012 Easy! The regulation bout between Akebono and Takanohana in Natsu Basho 1997. Akebono was one behind Taka and had to defeat him twice, which he did. It was his first yusho in ages. And I was there in the Kokugikan! I couldn't find the bout on Youtube, only the play-off, which wasn't nearly as great (although exciting because Akebono won). Swami 245 Posted November 26, 2012 Many great Chiyonofuji bouts - a mighty uwatenage victory against Tochinowaka in May 1988 just prior to his 53-bout rensho. Also ozeki Hokutenyu shoving then sekiwake Onokuni down by oshitaoshi on day 9, Nagoya 1985 en route to his second yusho. Swami
kuroimori 1,634 Posted November 26, 2012 Gotta be this one , even though the gyoji blew the call - he probably didn't expect this amazing comeback move
Gaijingai 1,597 Posted November 26, 2012 I was working in the Shibuya section of Tokyo in 1988. Above the Shibuya train station was a SONY Jumbotron - Huge! It was day 12 of the autumn basho. I was passing by after work and looked up. There about to start was Konishiki and Onokuni...two Ozeki's who were the largest men in sumo. At trhe tachiai I could almost see the Jumbotron move. Everyone in Hachiko Park stood still watching, entranced at the screen and the bout. When it ended 5 seconds later, it was like someone waved a magic wand and we all turned, came back to life, and walked on our ways. Gaijingai

Igordemorais 75 Posted November 26, 2012 Kyokutenho`s win got me screaming around the house Harumafuji`s victory over Hakuho to earn the title and the rank of Yokozuna too But the bout that got me hooked to sumo was Takanoyama x Miyogiryu , July last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt6yutY5KpM

That was pretty cool. I don't think I appreciated E. Honda enough when Street Fighter II first came out. I'll have to break it out and play it again.
yorikiried by fate 2,029 Posted November 29, 2012 I'm not sure about fondest, but during my most recent melacholic Asashoryu bout browsing I found these two beauties from Kyushu 2005. THE MAN HIMSELF against his two successors.
