Which are your fondest Sumo bouts?

It reminds you how much HMF has bulked up in the last few years.

I'm not sure about fondest, but during my most recent melacholic Asashoryu bout browsing I found these two beauties from Kyushu 2005. THE MAN HIMSELF against his two successors.

That second YouTube screen grab is in an unfortunate stopping place.

The last match I can remember that shocked me this much was one back in the very early 90s (can't remember who) where one rikishi leapfrogged over another at the charge.

I expect this was the matta between Kyokudozan and Asanowaka. Asanowaka's astonishment at the disappearance of his opponent was comical.

As was the bout where Yoshikaze pulled Yamamotoyama's mawashi exposing his generous oshiri. I was in stiches already and the replay had me in (puerile) tears of laughter.

Among many memorable bouts, the slap fest between Musoyama and Chiyotaikai (the Musashigawa victor spitting blood as he returned to his side of the dohyo) is a standout.

I think its more likely to be Mainoumi vs Kitakachidoki from January 1992:

I gather that this is a relatively rare technique so that is very likely to be the match that I remember. I thought it was a complete leapfrog but it has been 20 years so my memory may be playing tricks on me. Thanks for the video.

I have to say I really miss Asashoryu and his unbridled agression...

I miss his skill but not his attitude.

Asashoryu could have have been a tremendous role-model had he chosen not to be a bully.

Thank you for that Muso

Thanks so much for posting that one. It really was an extraordinarily brutal match. I haven't seen it since the Eurosport broadcast at the time when Syd Hoare memorably said, "They're going to need ropes around the ring!" I believe they were both told off afterwards.

One bout I pretend to remember vividly from Eurosport days of yore is Chiyotaikai vs. Musashimaru in his inaugural Ozeki Basho:

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi_basho.aspx?r=8&b=199903

Taikai's trademark bull rush tachiai was stopped short on Musa's brow, forcing him to go kyujo with a broken nose. The funniest thing about that was Musashimaru's priceless "did a gnat bite me?" look while collecting the kensho.

(good thing there isn't a video around - it might not have been quite as funny as I remember)

Mainoumi not only employed that leap, but also quite often clapped his hands as he rose from the tachi-ai to startle his opponent.

Thanks a lot!

Now I see it was before collecting the kensho that Musa checked his brow for gnat bites. B-) (And the bout took much, much longer than I remembered.)

Watching these bouts and also watching Araibira's national art of Sumo series has really put things into perspective for me, i only had the recent past to go on but now i'm recognising old faces although sadly not their names, the crowds seem more lively and active in the old days, and more numerous but then i should know that, i've read about the attendance problems for a while, but it's brought home to me more when i see the past.

, Natsu 2014 Shohozan vs Harumafuji, just reinforced my admiration and respect for the yokozuna.

Edit: and of course a turnaround... Shohozan's first and only

, Aki 2013 again Shohozan vs Harumafuji Edited by inhashi
