Bushuyama intai

Recommended Posts

Bushuyama has decided to call it a career

according to Nikkan Sports.

From now on he will be known as Onogawa oyakata.

One of my "grey" favourites. Glad to see him stick around, and good for him to be going out with a kachikoshi.

Interesting to see him go out at the same time as same shusshin, same class year Takamisakari. (Assuming he sticks to his word and won't fight in makushita.) Let's hope Wakanosato doesn't make it a trifecta...

One of my all-time favourite rikishi. A real gentleman, completely honest, filled with honour and respect toward his every opponent, even when they henka'd him. They don't make many like him. Was never spectacular but at his best he was very solid and strong. One of the ones who really embody what sumo is supposed to be (in my opinion).

Cheers to the lad.

does he have a kabu already ?

i am creating (right now) the rumour that he retired in order to help Musashimaru with the new heya.

It's in the first post. ;-) Onogawa-kabu, though just borrowed from Kitanoumi. I'm actually a bit surprised he's staying in, I've heard multiple times that he's not quite the networking type (everything from "he's a bit of a loner" to "he's a grumpy guy that nobody really likes" - take with a grain of salt, of course). Doesn't matter to me anyway - as the Panda said, his sumo was always of the upstanding type.

That thought crossed my mind, too. I've seen the same speculation about Miyabiyama, BTW. Edited by Asashosakari

Maybe this topic should be moved under "Ozumo Discussions", where those intai discussions are usually found.

After all those basho in makushita I thought he was looking for something outside Ozumo before calling it a day. And then this. What a good surprise indeed !!! And some years ago he didn't look good enough even for the 30 basho needed, let alone getting a kabu itself.

By the way, Takamisakari is already officially retired.

And on the English-language side of things - http://sumo.goo.ne.jp/eng/ozumo_meikan/rikishi_joho/rikishi_120.html

The intai list (such as it is at this time) shows both Bushuyama and Takamisakari's retirements as of Jan 27, and Hokutokuni's retirement as of Jan 20.

Bushuyama (Onogawa-oyakata) had his danpatsu-shiki at the kokugikan today, about 300 cutting. Next in line for that ceremony (tomorrow) Takamisakari (Furikwake-oyakata) making a cut.

Interesting. One of the most emotional rikishi on the dohyo apparently didn't cry at his danpatsu-shiki.

Emotional? He always looked sad, but I think that was due to the unfortunate shape of his brow.

I was refering to his occasional to display of joy or disappointment after winning or losing a bout.
