krindel 675 Posted April 11, 2013 I know Mienoumi did his kanreki dohyo-iri early, hence his not using the Kokugikan. Anyone know why Kitanofuji chose a hotel for it, however?
Tony 16 Posted April 11, 2013 I guess Kitanofuji chose an hotel because he wasn't member of NSK anymore.
Swami 245 Posted April 11, 2013 I guess Kitanofuji chose an hotel because he wasn't member of NSK anymore. In some ways I'm surprised that he didn't get the chance of doing his at the Kokugikan because he left the Kyokai on good terms as opposed to Wajima, and the fact that his two deshi Chiyonofuji and Hokutoumi are prominent in the Kyokai. Washuyama 641 Posted April 13, 2013 I wonder how long it's been since he's done any shiko?
Swami 245 Posted April 13, 2013 His last dohyo-iri would have been September 1985, ahead of his danpatsu-shiki. Swami

Dr.Radical 16 Posted May 4, 2013 On a (semi) related note, I went to Ueno (to see the pandas :D) and got this shot of my hand in Chiyonofuji's handprint.
Maguroyama 27 Posted June 6, 2013 Doesn't ANYBODY know if Kitanoumi's dohyo-iri will be open to the public? I can't find information anywhere.
Akinomaki 40,798 Posted June 9, 2013 60 in May Kitanoumi`s kanreki dohyo-iri is on June, 9th in the kokugikan, with Kokonoe (Chiyonofuji) and Takanohana as tachi-mochi and tsuyu-harai. Last such dohyo-iri was Musashigawa/Mienoumi in June 2007. The kanreki dohyo-iri took place today as planned with 2 riji as attendants. Over 1000 spectators. 9th of a modern era yokozuna, 6th in kokugikan, 4th of a riji-cho in office, after 25 years again, last was Futagoyama (Wakanohana I) in 1988. The first kanreki dohyo-iri was 1937 by Tachiyama.

Akinomaki 40,798 Posted June 9, 2013 First unryu dohyo-iri for him after 28 years: "I got a bit shaky, but I'm relieved I finished it OK. Other than at the training ground I was nervous, but the feeling as a former yokozuna came out. The shiko stamping made a fine sound, didn't it ?"Kokonoe, also at Taiho's kanreki dohyo-iri: "The 2nd time, having the chance to do that is not that easy. The images of wearing the yokozuna rope 10s of year ago come back to me. The shiko of the riji-cho was powerful."About his own dohyo-iri in 2 years: "I must b able to raise legs, I will train seriously !"Taka: "The yokozuna rope is really a fine thing. I did my part in a mood like visiting a shrine. Getting the rope fastened by my deshi is a pleasant memory. A day like rising to heaven."About his body of 85kg, different from the active days, laughing: "Half the physique. It's disheartening to have the that remain on photo."
Naganoyama 5,948 Posted June 9, 2013 Thanks for these. Did you find any larger pictures of this event?
Akinomaki 40,798 Posted June 9, 2013 I'm sure there will be some on the NSK Twitter - Yubinhaad will surely post them then.
Akinomaki 40,798 Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) The Kyodo pic a bit bigger Commemorative photo with the (once more active) 36th Shonosuke and a yobidashi (tate yobidashi Hideo?).Videohttp://www.fnn-news.com/news/headlines/articles/CONN00247655.html gone Edited June 10, 2013 by Akinomaki
Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) Nothing from the Kyokai so far, they'll hopefully catch up later. In the meantime... Posing for pictures in the shitaku-beya with some of the guests. Tsuyu-harai Takanohana-oyakata. Tachi-mochi Kokonoe-oyakata. Kitanoumi with the deshi who helped him into the tsuna. Kitanoumi holding court with the media. In the hanamichi... In action. The yobidashi involved is fuku-tate Takuro, by the way. Back in the shitakubeya after the dohyo-iri. Is that Kitanoumi's wife on the left? Rijicho and attendants answer more questions from the media. Handed a drink by Hakuho. Nothing to do with the kanreki, I just stumbled across it while looking for more pictures and thought it was cool. Kitanoumi in the old days, sitting round the chanko pot with the two Masuiyamas. Edited June 10, 2013 by Yubinhaad
Manekineko 200 Posted June 10, 2013 Hanamichi one is cool, you can see that all three tsunas have the same knot. :-)

krindel 675 Posted June 10, 2013 Hanamichi one is cool, you can see that all three tsunas have the same knot. :-) Interesting question popped up... If an attendant was shiranui-style, would he tie his tsuna in his own style, or in the style of the performer?
Tsubame 368 Posted June 10, 2013 Great pictures and nice video! I liked the moment at 0:30 in the video when Kokonoe straighten his tsuna... esp. when you know how loose sometimes swords fits their scabbards...
