Mark.Buckton 68 Posted May 19, 2013 Nice long battle between Kakuryu and Okinoumi! I won't spoil it by revealing the result best match of the day. by far ... longer fight in makushita but with more in for the Ikemen VS Kakuryu fight as the girls I was with called it......... perhaps the atmosphere really did make it the best today. Treblemaker 254 Posted May 19, 2013 Dohyo-iri's: Was able to tune into the Video stream live for a change (here, it's at 3:00 a.m.! 13 hrs behind!), and caught the Yokozuna dohyo-iri's. Was actually quite surprised at the changes to each man's routine. (I hadn't seen them live since, say, January). HF still does deliberate and slow individual components, each one a move all their own (and briefly separated from the moves that come before) (and he's keeping his toes down, for now), while Hakuho seems to have sped his up, to the point where he's doesn't stop between the second and third stomps, the rising from the crouch is faster, and the whole thing looks like more fluid, almost like he was in a rush... Neither does straight-arm claps (which I always preferred to the bent-elbow style - Hak used to. Not sure which former Yok did it that way, but it was always impressive.). Asashosakari 19,654 Posted May 20, 2013 Booty calls for Juryo soon (Dribbling...) Tough two remaining bouts though, should be Sasanoyama next and a very motivated top makushita or even low juryo for the last one.
kuroimori 1,634 Posted May 20, 2013 Darn Slippers, Episode 35 One of the MIB just didn't put his darn slippers on and went in his socks on the dohyo for a mono-ii - his mom will not be amused I guess...

Tsubame 368 Posted May 20, 2013 (edited) Did had Kotoshogiku his fist down before tachi-ai? Doesn't look so... Edited May 20, 2013 by Tsubame
ALAKTORN 346 Posted May 20, 2013 ^He didn’t. Myōgiryū is looking to get an Outstanding Performance prize if he keeps it up.
aderechelsea 125 Posted May 20, 2013 they need to move for the tachi-ai in synch .... it doesn't really matter if a rikishi (especially an Ozeki) has his fists on the ground. and for his match against Kakuryu ... he was actually a bit slower in the tachi-ai than Kaku. If someone should be screaming for a "matta" it should have been Sogiku. But i am glad that nothing was called and the bout was fair and square.
aderechelsea 125 Posted May 20, 2013 random video that includes the Rijicho and portrays this. Back then there were more standing tachi-ai's than you can count.

As far as I remember, both rikishi have to have both fist on the ground before the match starts! well ... if you didn't like the old video just check a currently active rikishi. Toyohibiki .... i doubt he even touches ONE .... let alone BOTH hands on the dohyo before his bouts get under way. and btw .... If there was a statistic for "most total minutes spent in the dohyo for someone's bouts", i don't think anyone can compare to Asasekiryu or maybe Kotonowaka. Tsubame 368 Posted May 20, 2013 Didn't say I didn't watch it, but you can't blame ME for that the shinpan or gyoji don't call a matta... Both hands have still to be on the ground...
Igordemorais 75 Posted May 20, 2013 Not necessarily. If they are close enough, and you display your intent through your eyes and swinging your hands forth after you touch the ground, the other guy will be able to read it. A tachi-ai is an unspoken agreement, focusing on the hands to minimal detail will make you lose your damn focus and aggressiveness. Look at him in the eyes, unless he's being a clown like Kisenosato, you'll know it's coming
Kintamayama 45,526 Posted May 20, 2013 Depending on the general boredom, the shimpan will suddenly decide to be very strict about both hands being on the dohyo, as we witnessed a couple of years ago, resulting in countless mattas and general annoyance. Regulation say fists two on floor, no matta what. Enforcement says not so much.

dingo 1,294 Posted May 20, 2013 That was some slapfest between Takanoyama and Akiseyama! But even more than the slapping I'm astounded that somehow Akiseyama didn't manage to put any power or even weight (which he looks to have a lot of) behind his pushes and slaps and didn't move Takanoyama even by and inch... if it had been a heavyweight makuuchi rikishi, Takanoyama would probably have flown out of the dohyo after the first push. And each time I see Daikiho on the dohyo I'm surprised how smallish he looks next to his opponents. Somehow he strikes a much bigger stature on his solo photos.

Koorifuu 1,020 Posted May 20, 2013 Hasn't Matta just had a great season with Chelsea? Sorry, it was up there and I just had to bat it :-P Those sound like words of doom to me, and this was almost the last place I hoped to be reminded of this! Either way. Akiseyama and Takanoyama had a legendary bout. The epithom of flabbity and a skinny dude having what looked like a drunkard quarrell. It was barely sumo for the most part.

If there was a statistic for "most total minutes spent in the dohyo for someone's bouts", i don't think anyone can compare to Asasekiryu or maybe Kotonowaka.I'd say the current "most likely to induce a long bout" rikishi are probably Asasekiryu, Tokushinho and Yoshiazuma. krindel 675 Posted May 20, 2013 Kyokutenho looked so lackluster today, that, as his fan, I really hope it was a case of him helping fellow old-dog Wakanosato rather than an indication of actual energy levels available...
shumitto 418 Posted May 20, 2013 Kyokutenho looked so lackluster today, that, as his fan, I really hope it was a case of him helping fellow old-dog Wakanosato rather than an indication of actual energy levels available... Kyokutenho has clearly lost something in the past two months and his loss to Wakanosato shows just that.
