wanderer 159 Posted May 18, 2013 Looks like this tourney is over for Baruto. Took a bad fall and seemed to be in serious pain. Seems like his weak leg buckled under Kisenosatos weight when he tried to throw him, not only cost him the match, but possibly aggrevated the injury. Hopefully just got the wind knocked out of him and the knee just hurt for a moment, but guess we'll find out tomorrow. :( This could have still been an okay tourney for him, losing only to Ozeki and a Komosubi would not be too horrible at this point. But it will be hard to take on the rest of the pack if his leg doesn't hold. Fingers crossed for super-heavy icing to heal the knee so that he can keep going. I’d prefer that he takes the time he needs to fully heal the injury before coming back, he aggravated it once already and now it doesn’t look good either… stay put for a year if that’s what you need, then come back. He’ll just break himself beyond repair. He should have done this last year immediately after the injury. He could have taken the better part of the year off and still come back in Maegashira, would have had an easier time getting back into shape and there would have been a chance to get back into Sanyaku rapidly. That didn't look good, now Baruto's career is real danger. Once again, it is my thought that these giants carry little too much weight and their knees get busted. 175kg Kisenosato on top of his own 200kg is no joke. Good luck Baruto. wanderer 159 Posted May 18, 2013 Is it only me or Kisenosato this basho looks quite different. His raw power would show itself only in fleeting moments in the past. This basho he seems to be in control of his power and looking just like toying with his opponents. Is this the breakthrough basho for him we have been waiting for about 65 million years? Masumasumasu 902 Posted May 18, 2013 It's so much of a 'non-issue' that the broadcasters get into an argument over it at 00:30. (Murray is such an ass)

shumitto 418 Posted May 18, 2013 Random thing I just realized (although I find it was alluded to a year ago) - Kyokutenho has a very realistic shot at becoming the all-time leader in sekitori appearances. He was at exactly 1500 at the start of the basho, and only needs another year; Terao leads with 1589. In between are only Kaio (1577, despite many more sekitori basho) and Takamiyama (1535). Kaio's 1444 makuuchi appearances (Tenho 1260 before shonichi) and Oshio's 1891 career appearances (Tenho 1660) are probably out of reach though. While we are at it, it has been mentioned a couple of days ago during the Japanese broadcast that Kyokutenho has faced in Chiyootori someone who is younger even than his own sumo career. That is not something we see everyday in Makuuchi.
Benevolance 2,511 Posted May 18, 2013 Is it only me or Kisenosato this basho looks quite different. Kise is fighting much better this tournament. If he'd fought like this a couple years ago, he could have legitimately made ozeki. :D
bettega 431 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) I think that Osunaarashi touched the ground first - but I'm his fan (Maybe some kind of "third-world complex") and it's ok to me =] Edited May 18, 2013 by bettega
torquato 1,075 Posted May 18, 2013 The explanation of the Endo-Osunaarashi bout mono-ii was very peculiar. Below juryo they usually don't call the rikishi by name, but say east/west-side rikishi. The head shimpan called O. by name, but he called him Ooarashi 3 times. I'm not an expert and wasn't aware of this practice, but could it because both rikishi are listet on the east? saying 'nishi' sounds awkward and 'higashi' would be unclear. @bettega I thought so too. Kintamayama 45,527 Posted May 18, 2013 Jokoryu just got screwed in his match with Chiotairyu. "I was sure I won it. I was convinced I won it. What can I do.." said Joukouryuu. "I was sure I lost.." admitted Chiyotairyuu. He lost, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

When I watched above upload I realized that I do miss the cozy/boring NHK-style broadcast from time to time. (Haven't checked if NHK is available again thru KeyholeTV) Dunno if it is only for the replays and nice analysis from Mainoumi or the fear of some emergency broadcast change due to some important parliament debate or a live coverage of a 5cm tsunami - maybe it is just a high level of natsukashii-ness. aderechelsea 125 Posted May 19, 2013 (edited) Kaisei was either extremely unlucky or extremely absent-minded. he tried to keep his foot on the tawara while pushing Ikioi easily out of the dohyo but he must the scraped the sand with his toe or something. "unfair" but fair at the same time. Edited May 19, 2013 by aderechelsea

Bugman 384 Posted May 19, 2013 (edited) How does Toyonoshima survive these kinds of hurricane attacks without serious injury? A larger and lesser rikishi would have limped away from that. Edited May 19, 2013 by Bugman
