I wonder if any Japanese journalist asked Osunaarashi about the turmoil in Egypt.

The 'turmoil' is actually a celebration of his first basho at Juryo.

The NHK announcer yesterday said that he replied to that with a gloomy face: "Don't ask."

This will be used as an excuse if he does poorly in Nagoya.

There is a response however on his facebook page after last night's turn of events in Egypt.

Not sure though if he or his admin wrote this statement.

What statement ? (for those of us not on fb)

I hope he can focus enough to have a decent basho but that may be too much to ask. I was really looking forward to seeing how he would adjust to the new level of competition and the heavier schedule.

On the 5th Sokokurai only did light adjustments at the heya, no training bouts: “I don't know to what extent, but I think my condition has recovered quite better than I thought.”
He seems to have trained in 2011 with his first day opponent Tokushoryu, makushita then: ”I'll go with all my strength.”
About keiko: “I have gown tired, but I will do a bit tomorrow. I'm not anxious, I did all that was to do.”
Commentator Mainoumi: “From his way to fall down when being thrown I felt frailty. It will be hard to get kachi-koshi.”

Encouragement party at Otake-beya yesterday as a "chanko party".
Oosunaarashi: “My injured shoulder gives no problems at all any more. I have to do my best for the many folks who only can come to see the Nagoya-Basho.”

Encouragement:

A few pictures from an Oitekaze-beya keiko session.

The shisho (former Maegashira Daishoyama) oversees keiko. Also instructing the deshi is Nakagawa-oyakata (former Maegashira Asahisato) in the white outfit. And in the background in the white mawashi is former Juryo Daishodai, who as Asashosakari discovered now works as a coach at the heya.

Seems purple to me (but I'm a little colorblind)

Sokokurai finished pre-basho keiko today, at Arashio-beya with the makushita there, 16-0.

Oosunaarashi about Egypt: “Politics and sports are different things. Now for me the only thing is to concentrate with utmost effort on sumo.”
He plans to rise early and eat at about 2:30 a.m. during Ramadan, Otake-oyakata supports him: “We prepare something for him, so that he can eat anytime during the night.”
Usually morning chanko is at around 9 o'clock after keiko, and then at about 6 o'clock in the evening – he can eat after sunset at around 7:30.
