Retirement is close ? What motivation or real chance he has to come back from Juryo to higher ranks of sumo if knee is still busted, he doesnt want (or is not allowed) to have surgery ? How often does it happen that ex-ozeki continues in Juryo anyway ? Not often, I guess.Plus, he said repeatedly to Estonian media( already few years ago ) that he is tired from life in Japan and homesick .He already bought a farm here, I think his family is running it now.

It all depends on the prognosis of his injury. If the rest + any surgery needed can get him up and running by next basho, he can make a killing in Juryo / lower maegashira. A healthy Baruto from M15 would actually have a pretty good shot at a Yusho even, if you think about it.

Then again if his injury is not healable by then, it is very likely he'll choose intai, I don't see him spending a full year more working his way up again...

I see a huge Baruto Intai or not intai mega-thread coming up...

(just when the Kyokai wants us to rather discuss the yokozuna-run of local hero Kisenosato)

But coming back to the topic of absences, when will the non-sekitori kyujo list be online?

Thanks for refreshing my memory on this one!

Onoe-oyakata about Baruto: “He's not in a state to be able to do sumo. Whether he feels like entering later only he knows.” - kyujo the whole basho will mean dropping to juryo, he had no keiko bouts at all before the basho.
Baruto: “If being asked 'Isn't it painful?', that's not so. I don't want to enter in a halfway fashion. I need a bit time.” About entering later: “It's not necessarily no, but I'm afraid for my knee. I don't want to drop, but when thinking about the future, presently I want to heal the injury.”

I hope he sits out the whole basho. Skipping the first week or 10 days and then try to collect three wins against the basho's underachievers only makes sense if he's actually in condition to fight and unlikely to re-injure himself, and I have severe doubts about either aspect.

West Jonokuchi 18 TAKACHIHONOMINE (last 5 basho: 4-3, 1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 0-0-7)

I guess the hernia he got from carrying his shikona around was worse than I initially thought.

Keitenkai seems to be a real James Bond fan lately:

0-0-7, 0-0-7, 0-0-7, 0-0-7

Oh, have to change my pick for the Pick The Yusho Winner Game

Maybe Kaio's heya branchout is imminent...

If rikishi change shikona to induce good luck, "Keitenkai" must be among the unluckiest shikona changes in history... :-(

Anyone has any idea how long he'll still be out?

September, at least.

One of the unfortunate aspects of sumo is that the public isn't given clear medical reports. I'm not a medical expert, but based on what I've seen in baseball and the early reports about Baruto (which indicated swelling for weeks after the last basho) he would benefit from surgery. In fact, he probably should have had surgery last month. Or even earlier. And he should have sat out a basho before this one. Regardless, if he doesn't have surgery I doubt he'll be able to wrestle again (or, slightly more accurately, be able to wrestle again without significantly aggravating his current injury within a few matches).

If he does have surgery, it's likely he'll have to miss the next basho too, which would drop him out of juryo (and the paid ranks). Plus, even with surgery, that knee is always going to be weak and vulnerable. In essence he'll become a better version of Aminishiki. So, if Baruto wants to go through the rehab and become a jo'i mainstay for a few more years (let's be honest: he's never going to be an ozeki again) he can certainly do that. But my guess is he's had enough, and I hope he's saved sufficient money that he can retire and live the type of life that his years in the spotlight in Japan have made possible. I don't mean to be a gloomy Gus, but there is no point in sugar-coating things either.

Given how completely wrecked Aminishiki looked at one point long ago (circa 2004/05), I'm inclined to say Aminishiki himself is already that better version of Aminishiki - in his current condition Baruto has a long way to go just to match that, let alone be even better still, being already on the wrong side of 28. :-s Even with surgery he might not end up being much more than a better version of Tochinoshin, I fear. A big slow guy with iffy knees is a prime target even for mid-maegashira opponents.

Officially it's ligament damage to the left knee and 2 weeks to fully recover for Baruto.

Recent local news from Baruto is that he is planning to compete this basho. He is determined to stay in Makuuchi and will aim for 2-3 wins at the later part of the tourney. He's coming in "cold", but hopefully he'll be against sufficiently weak rikishi so he can get the required wins with minimal strain.

Fingers crossed for good match-ups and no complications. :)

Personally I would think a drop to Juryo wouldn't be that bad as it would allow more recovery time and then a better "ease in" period when returning. However I have a feeling that his stable is putting some pressure on, probably convincing him that it's not good for someone who was the top Ozeki a year ago to fall so far so fast. Baruto is fairly humble himself so I don't quite see him being that adamant about staying in Makuuchi. He has had plenty of experience falling to Juryo and coming back amazingly strong.

Unsurprisingly, Tochinoshin is kyujo for Day 6. Torn cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament of the right knee. :-(
