Jokoruu is not impressing me at all so far this basho. After his dismal results from M7 last time, I expected him to start better and prove he deserves to be higher. But, in the end, he has obviously hit his wall in Makuuchi quite hard, and seems to be struggling to do well even in the low ends of the top division.

Masunoyama is also doing quite badly, I think finally his opponents caught up to him and are prolonging the fights until he can't handle it. After 4 consecutive MK (and a fifth in the making), it is pretty obvious that if his condition is fixable, it should have been fixed a year ago... :-(

You think so? None of his three losses took exceptionally long. Just sloppy sumo, that's all.

Sokokurai got a kensho as well on day 3. A sample list of returning rikishi was on sanspo.

Shimizugawa getting banished by his shisho for bad behavior in 1927.10 and left with haigyou, but his father made an appeal for his reinstatement in his will and committed suicide. His banishment was lifted and he came back in 1928.10 as west juryo-end-tsukedashi 西十両尻付け出しand made it to ozeki in this thread, also with links about the below.

Of the 48 rikishi expulsed after the Shunjuen incident in 1932.1, about half came back in 1933.1, later yokozuna Minanogawa was a makuuchi separate rank幕内別席 and took the yusho 11-0.

Special is sekiwake Tamanofuji (now Tateyama-oyakata), (old topic), running away after one basho at jonokuchi, entering the self-defence forces, after military discharge starting new at maezumo.

Jokoryu's career trajectory so far reminds me of Futeno, another very polished college rikishi who got found out in lower makuuchi.

Jokoryu is wrestler belt boy but many of trics working on university level of sumo or in makushita is not working with heavy and very agressive rikishi at makuuchi level. He has to work and work to improve his ability to amortize attacks and also to handle 180 kg rikish in the case of jotsu battle.

Ishiura did it again .... won from a disadvantageous position after the tachi-ai. When he gets figured out round the top of makushita he should have problems but he may also transform into something else. Surprisingly effective sumo thus far.

Another one to watch for a definitely entertaining bout.

I hoping Ishiura will get promoted as fast as his uni mate Jōkōryū but I agree it will only get tougher when he meets opponents with longer mawashi and more established chonmages. It was the first time I have seen him get really pushed back but he still managed to do a Houdini and turn it around. Occasionally some of the university rikishi are a little burnt out by the time they go pro so maybe the time he took off beforehand will work to his advantage -and of course the Mongolian influence in his heya.I wouldn't mind betting that Hakuho can show him things that he is too big to do or shouldn't do as a Yokozuna.

I am also expecting big things from Endo. Having met him in Hong Kong he is arrogant enough and should flourish in the big pond.

the looks the part and he also does solid sumo this far. I am also expecting big things from him. But i said that for Futeno too i think .... :-P

btw .... how about that Satoyama win today?. A fine piece of sumo by both Sotairyu and himself.

Looks like kyujo for Tochinoshin, he couldn't walk out alone.

unfortunately it looks like he is done for the basho.

On the replay, it's not clear what he has done. It wasn't a usual knee buckling, it seems that something finally snapped under pressure. Odd

Could be anything from a twisted ankle to an unusual foot fracture (like Kotooshu had a couple of years ago), I guess. I blame my comparison between Tochinoshin and Baruto before the basho...

Edit: And it looks like Chiyonokuni will be taking the next ambulance...

Chiyonokuni seems to be hurt really badly too. What the hell is going on?

edit: he won the mono-ii decision nonetheless. He seemed like the stayed in a matawari-like position for too long "waiting" for Aoiyama to fall down. I also thought he won when watching the stream.

He is done for the basho though .... he couldn't even get up to the dohyo to accept the win. He went back to shitakubeya on a wheelchair. :-(

Chiyonokuni did a mata-wari on the dohyo, luckily winning after mono-ii – he couldn't have done a rematch. He even needed a wheel-chair – bad turf, Nagoya ?

Damn, a hyper extended knee/torn inner thigh or groin for chiyonokuni, as he ended up in a what was other wise a perfectly executed splits. beltless arm throw while in the splits? Crazy

An expensive shiroboshi. He's in a lot of pain.

Torn thigh muscle perhaps? He was essentially doing the matawari with most of Aoiyama's weight on his shoulders... Definitely a whole lot more painful-looking than Tochinoshin's injury. :-(

Tochinoshin immediately grabbed his knee with his incident. Though who knows until we get a report.

Toyonoshima has lost his mojo. That was weak.

During the recent Osunaarashi discussions about how far he'll be able to go, the adage that sumo success = talent + effort + injury avoidance came to my mind again. Chiyonokuni is rapidly developing into a case study about the importance of aspect #3, sadly. At one point he looked like a definite future meatgrinder mainstay at the very least. Now I'm worried he'll be the next Tamaasuka...

i was going to post something in that vein ....

As a fan i am really worried ... he should be looking better even when losing. He is not even a definite winner with a morozashi these days ... this is troubling.

Kyokutenho needs to teach a class on how to avoid injuries.

i would advise Kyokushuho to enroll in a class like that.

Reminds me of something-I think it was either Hayateumi or Takanowaka that was injured in the same way and never really came back after that. Edited by Kintamayama
