Looks like I'll have to update all of my Excel web-scrapers... not sure if the sumoDB will need to do the same...

Hmm, some new stuff though-for instance, the kyujo page now has all rikishi injured, all divisions, in English as well.

Yeah, and I'm sure the format will change several times during the next few basho as they iron out the details...

On the other hand, it does work better in some ways and simplifies my spreadsheets.

But no idea if the format for the torikumi will be identical before & after the bouts are run... should be an interesting Aki...

End of an era...IIRC the goo site started at the beginning of 2004, so almost 10 years.

Looks like the tabled data is missing from the banzuke topics.

Real names are reversed now in the English-side rikishi profiles; previously in Western order, now surname-given name. Shikona kanji-only and given name-only changes are now displayed on the English side (Kotooshu, Hochiyama), although the given name changes can't be tracked back even on the Japanese side (Hochiyama). Looks like my bimonthly data grab will still be useful...

I really like this new layout. Granted, it needs some adjusting here and there but overall it looks good. I just wonder why the lower rankers (makushita and below) are clickable on some pages while on others they are not.

Oh hey, the beginnings of an English version of the tokoyama listing (not linked anywhere yet) - real name readings of the tokoyama were the one thing that couldn't be found anywhere before.

In general, most things that didn't exist on the English side before don't exist now either, torikumi and hoshitori are the notable exceptions. (And actually having links to the lower division rikishi profiles.) Remains to be seen if that's going to change further; for now it looks like they've mainly just ported over the existing page content into the new design.

Looks like an over-designed piece of crap to me, but that's what's fashionable on the Web these days, I suppose. On my machine, the longer name/rank combinations tend to get cut off on the right. And it'd be nice if they'd get a fluent English-speaker involved.

You can really fuck play with it: If you move your mouse quickly over the main menu labels, you can unfold all associated subthingieswhateverthenameis at the same time. If you keep doing this for a minute and then stop, all the folding and unfolding will continue forever. Cute.

Generally, I'm with Kuroyama. The previous version was functional, stable, informative. No need for a change, especially when the change incorporates design concepts that I would call - with a lot of goodwill - "Pagemaker 1.2 Look and Feel".

I will need to write a new grabber. I can already see that my grabber can't read anything now.

Probably next basho (and perhaps next few too) will be run by me manually, because I won't be able to write a new grabber so quickly. But we will see.

The hoshitori/torikumi layout looks mostly geared towards the Japanese side (except for the inexplicably wide kimarite column), which looks rather messed up with the longer romaji shikona. That definitely needs to be addressed in some way, but as mentioned above I think their main goal for now was to port the existing content, and for that making the English side look good was probably not a high priority.

In a way, the new site looks a bit like a modern version of the pre-goo site, all just a little bit too overloaded compared to the fairly clean goo layout.

Edit: While I'm at it, maybe somebody wants to relive the experience of the really old site version, too.
