Demise of Sumo Mailing List?

Recommended Posts

Informative as the Forum is, it's always great to have additional sources and perspectives. Unfortunately, we're about to lose one of those. The owner of Sumo Mailing List is no longer able to provide that service to all of us. If we can't identify a replacement, SML is toast.

So here's a request: anybody out there, or anybody you know, who loves sumo and is tech-savvy enough to be willing to pick up the task of looking after it?

I'm sure all of those on the List will be more than grateful!

Well, there's still the ancient newsgroup rec.sport.sumo, which (apart from Kobayashi Toshiharu's usual banzuke and results posts) is currently populated by one vocal member only.

You can either access it directly with email clients like Outlook or Thunderbird (set up a newsgroup account), or use agents like Google.

Do those on the list even realize the list might be gone soon? And would they be able to tell the difference? I read it through the web only so I don't know if messages are still going out, but they certainly still seem to be coming in, and if anybody's actually wondering why the list traffic has dropped to nearly zero over the last three months, they're certainly not bothered enough about it to send a message and ask.

I actually "follow" sumo forum through the list feed. I'd prefer it if sumo forum had a follow every post option.

So I have been seeing postings, and didn't put together that they were only the sumo forum mail.

IMHO, wee really don't need two separate discussions as much as a mailing list/forum choice.

I must admit I'm not sure what you're referring to here.

I've asked sumoforum to email me each new topic first post - which is all that's available. I then subscribe to interesting topics (such as this one) so I get all subsequent posts as emails.

Why you may ask. Because I can follow a whole bunch of mailing lists at once in a reader, but have to visit each forum separately to follow that way.

Ah, I took your previous post to mean there's some gatewaying of the Sumoforum through the SML server going on. (Which Joe was considering at one point but never implemented AFAIK.)

There's a cryptic "Notify me of new comments" feature on the notifications control panel, but having activated it a few hours ago it didn't actually do anything upon your post being made, so I guess it's something different than a "notify me of everything" feature.

Don't know if that helps, but there's a RSS feed for the sumoforum (button at the lower left). Never tried it, though.

Works well. Use it all the time.

Hmm, looks like I might have made a timely download of the SML archives earlier today...it's 404'ing for me now.

I just wish the list wasn't broken. I haven't received a message from SML in months. A bit of digging showed I can send to the list, and it goes through fine, I just can't receive. And the list owner has been unable to fix whatever the problem is. :(

Because ability to post anything on SML list has been intermittent over the past few months, I think a lot of Listers weren't even aware that the owner isn't going to maintain it any more. Those trying to find an alternative option haven't been able to access Joe's list, so nobody's been "notified." Sounds from an earlier posting (now displaying a 404 notice) like it really may be too late to save it. It's a shame, as there was a lot of sumo knowledge among those on the List, in addition to what's here.

My alternate address where I received sumo ML died on me this summer. I tried to resubscribe to the list with a new address last week, but since it was one of several lists/Forums where I had to change the address I didn't really notice that I received no confirmation nor posts...

Then get in touch with Joe Klemmer at joe.klemmer@gmail.com He has a lot going on in his life right now that is not good, so it may be several days before you may hear from him. You may need to e-mail him 2 or 3 times. Ask how he is doing.

That would be wonderful! Also removes a great burden from Joe.

if you can continue the List, I think many of us would be really, really grateful, me included! Arrigato!!

Hard to avoid noticing that, after a brief flurry of "so good to know the list will continue!" comments, the SML has gone right back to being almost exclusively Kobayashi results posts...

Anything but that... (I'm not sure I have send access anyway as an inactive member.)

Seriously: I've rarely come across any place on the internet that engenders such passionate pleas for its continued survival, yet which is in actual fact in almost complete disuse. Sometimes it seems the remaining list members are more fans of the list itself and of certain other list members than they are fans of sumo, and than they are fans of talking about sumo. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm really struggling to identify such a place as one that provides "additional perspectives" about sumo, as the OP would have it.

With Joe struggling to maintain the list any longer, I was sort of expecting some honest appraisal of what the SML is actually supposed to be used for before somebody gets drafted into maintaining it (because, you know, there's little point in investing the work if nobody's going to use the place), but it seems all anybody's asking of the SML nowadays is to serve as a security blanket... It's there, and people feel good about that, but that's about it.

I'm very happy to have it back; the traffic is just about as much as I can manage while sumo is happening just down the road -- I've also had a number of personal messages from lurkers.

Sumo Forum traffic is about right for me too, though in a different way; during a basho there's a long line of "Sumo Games" posts that I can just scroll down without opening. That's nice and tidy.

Hey, if it works for you, then everything's great.
