Bugman 384 Posted September 17, 2013 Thanks Kinta, Shohozan is a real handful isn't he? Love his power and he always looks so small when at the Tachi-ai compared to his opponents.
Benevolance 2,510 Posted September 17, 2013 Thanks Kinta! i like Myogiryu's posture and balance, but i like Chiyotairyu's speed and power, if only we could merge them together! You're in luck! We did! And we called it Endo!
Asashosakari 19,648 Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) i like Myogiryu's posture and balance, but i like Chiyotairyu's speed and power, if only we could merge them together! You're in luck! We did! And we called it Endo! Only if Endo gains about 20 kg without losing any of his speed... Endo won't be overpowering anybody in sanyaku, heck, he's had his hands full just with the 3 lower maegashira this basho so far. Purely in height/weight terms Endo = Kitataiki. Doesn't exactly strike fear into the hearts of the high-rankers, does it. As a more charitable comparison, he's also about the same build - if less muscular for now - as Kakuryu and indeed Myogiryu. Both are renowned for their technical brilliance, which is pretty much what you need if you're built like that and surviving in sanyaku. Endo ain't Chiyotairyu, not by a longshot. Bugman 384 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) I can't really explain why, as you all probably know i'm not technically minded, so i can't say with confidence whether the Sumo itself has been of a high level but this is the most fun basho i've had in a little while, whether it's Kinta being even more on fire than usual with the jokes (i been laughing all the way through these) or the excitement of the bouts i can't say but i'm having a great time, thank you Kinta. Overall, I think Endo has the better shot of becoming ozeki, but Myogiryu should be a real cautionary tale about expecting too much too soon. (Tochiazuma, too.)

I was able to watch the live stream on days 1-4 without Kinta's comments, and it's my impression, too, that this is the best basho I've sen in a while. Thanks in advance to Kintamayama for keeping me in touch during the upcoming days.
Akinomaki 40,756 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) The NHK news7 video nearly always shows 3 bouts, today with a slowmo for Kotooshu-Myogiryu (in a bad angle though): Day 4: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20130919/k10014646471000.html Day 3: http://www3.nhk.or.j...4609731000.html Day 2: http://www3.nhk.or.j...4577771000.html Day 1: http://www3.nhk.or.j...4557131000.html Usually the videos are hidden from the site outside of Japan, but I (and everybody else should be able to as well) can see them as the result of the following actions: From the “Watching region blocked video” topic: - installing https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/stealthy/ into Firefox - after Firefox restart setting the Stealthy preferences to a proxy server in JP, switching Stealthy on - trying (has to be in vain: seems an Internal Server Error has to appear) to display the NHK page - switching Stealthy off - opening the NHK page after that had the start button for the video displayed - clicking on it showed the video, full screen is available The effect still lasted for me on the next day – until I pressed reload on an NHK page: never do that, then all is gone again. I had to deactivate Stealthy, restart Firefox, activate it, restart, then I could continue with trying in vain and the error part again Edited September 18, 2013 by Akinomaki

ALAKTORN 346 Posted September 18, 2013 Completely off-topic except that it pertains to video - a milestone was reached yesterday: One of the comments in that video says “Asahimaru(winner) retired by Detached retinas.”… is that true?
Kintamayama 45,501 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) Completely off-topic except that it pertains to video - a milestone was reached yesterday: What was the milestone? I have no clue.. Edit: Oh, right-400,000..Amazing. All because Yahoo sport linked it to the article about Wakakirin being thrown out of sumo for poting smok. Asashosakari 19,648 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) One of the comments in that video says “Asahimaru(winner) retired by Detached retinas.”… is that true?He did, but (as far as I know) it wasn't related to that bout. Edit: Just realized that video in fact wasn't linked through the DB yet. That oversight has been rectified now. :-) Edited September 18, 2013 by Asashosakari
Benevolance 2,510 Posted September 18, 2013 Ha! Chiyotairyu ain't Chiyotairyu. At least as long as the marriage is looming. Just jump on the Jokoryu Homasho Goeidou Endo train, already!
Tamaikazuchi 4 Posted September 19, 2013 Two extremely close calls this Basho so far that I don't know if I agree with. Shohozan and Harumafuji, watching the High Def broadcast, I would argue that should be Haru's win, or a redo at the least, was suuuuper close. Then again with Osh and Myogiryu, in the slow mo replays on one and and one angle only, Osh's hand touches before Giryu's face. Another redo I'd think, unless Giryu's topknot brushed just before Osh's hand hit. Awesome Basho so far. And Kinta, even though I have access to the NHK broadcast, I still watch your vids every day. They are essential. Thank you!
Treblemaker 254 Posted September 19, 2013 Rashi still hasn't figured out the tachi-ai yet... With a body his size, coming in hard and low would do some real damage, but I think he's afraid of messing up his hair. He also has a tendency to lock his knees and stand straight upright. That Osh bout was worth the price of admission. (Considering I didn't pay nothin', I can safely say that.) Osh looks good. A lot of people look good. Lots of slapping and pushing... would love to see Taikai in his prime take on some of these guys. Impressed with Endo, but still early in the game for him. Let's see how he is a week from now. This is shaping up to be one of the better basho of late. Kinta, thank you very strong (as my aunt used to say).
yorikiried by fate 2,029 Posted September 19, 2013 Shohozan and Harumafuji, watching the High Def broadcast, I would argue that should be Haru's win, or a redo at the least, was suuuuper close. Go and review the day 2 vid. Harumafuji's heel is already touching the outside sand way before Shohozan is anywhere near the ground. I hate to say it, but they got that totally right. (Admittedly, it would have been nice to see a discussion just to give credit to HF's rank.)

Bugman 384 Posted September 19, 2013 Haha the lap-dancing joke cracked me up. (Laughing...) Ok i'm going to say something (possibly) controversial here, Asahisho should be politely asked to stop his giant salt throw, i'm convinced other rikishi are slipping on it.
