So Aran was East 16. And Tochinoshin stays in Juryo. Wakanosato at Juryo west 5, Takanoyama gone to beyond the curtain (Makushita west 2)..Amuuru at Makushita 9.

Not sure if this is the right thread to discuss it, but does Takanoyama (or anyone demoted below Juryo) lose privileges and personal assistants? Does he have to serve higher ranked rikishi now?

Yes.

Probably not.

I so hope Takanoyama bounces back next basho. I just like this guy a lot.

And wow, Endo now rubbing shoulders with rikishi like Ikio... I'm looking forward to him being seriously challenged.

Takanoiwa is one of the unluckiest rikishi. With a kachi-koshi as juryou 2 in last september, we could expect that he will be promoted. Takanohana-beya will wait to celebrate his first makuuchi rikishi.

Getting to makuuchi with an 8-7 from J2 is likely, but far from certain, as you can see here. But he sure is looking unlucky as there have been only two cases since Nagoya 2010 and guess who the other case was? Right, Takanoiwa again two basho ago. Plus, last basho he really has to fault only himself, going from 7-3 to 7-8 at J1e, a streak of losses which hurt even more after the non-promotion now.

They lose the privileges (salary, silk outfits, attendant tsukebito) but unless the circumstances are really unusual they never go back to doing menial tasks.

Takanoyama is back where his sumo belongs.

"but unless the circumstances are really unusual they never go back to doing menial tasks." Not sure where you got this Orion. This is a popular gripe with guys going own to makushita, particularly in the smaller heya.

Depends on your definition of "menial". I've never heard of a former sekitori being ordered to go back to scrubbing toilets, or even doing a senior's laundry -- but of course customs and attitudes vary with the stablemaster, especially in the newer heya.
