Video Stream - Kyushu 13,

Recommended Posts

The NSK should once again provide a live internet video stream of the action in ALL divisions every day of the Kyushu basho. The link will go LIVE at about 8:20 AM Japan Standard Time (JST) with the Jonokuchi division and continue through the end of the Makuuchi Division at about 6:00 PM.

The service is provided via Ustream using the following browser link(s) which should be active 24/7/365 on all major browsers and phone/tablet devices. Normally, it will be in Off Air mode except when LIVE streaming is activated. The mode switch is automatic.

Embed: http://www.ustream.tv/embed/15844301 (Recommended)

Normal: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/grand-sumo-tournaments

Pop Out: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/grand-sumo-tournaments/pop-out

The approximate start times for each division through day 12 should be:

Jk - 08:40 AM JST

Jd - 09:00 AM

Sd - 11:20 AM

Ms - 1:40 PM

Juryo - 3:05 PM

Mk - 4:20 PM

Dohyo-iri: Juryo 2:40 PM, Mk 3:50 PM

All times are +/- 15 minutes

Jonokuchi should start on Day 1 at about 08:20 AM. Days 13-15 have fewer matches per day, and they should start at about 10:30 AM

Ustream is an ad/subscription supported service. If ads become a problem, google Adblock Plus to get a free ad blocker for your browser.

Note that Japan stays on year-round standard time, so for those who have recently left daylight saving time, the Kyushu basho will start one hour "earlier" than the Aki basho.

Aki was the first basho using the Ustream streaming method. There were a couple methods developed to permanently record the stream. I leave it to others to expound on these methods.

Enjoy the basho!!

On the Friday before shonichi, the NSK shifted to a new static screen shot featuring the Kyushu basho. In the pre-Ustream days, NSK would activate the link with live dohyo shots on the Friday and Saturday afternoons before the basho for testing. They may do it again for this basho.

Edit: No pre-basho live test activity on Friday or Saturday. Day 1 scheduled to start at 08:45 JST.

Day 1 - Ustream went LIVE at 08:35 JST with Logo only.

== Live on the Dohyo at 0841. Video quality very good. Audio good on/off dohyo balance.

May be getting a slight echo on the on-dohyo mikes.

Araibira is up and running with near realtime posts of the videos in the Sumo DB. (Clapping wildly...) (Clapping wildly...)

Video quality very good.

Well, I'd call that okayish. Same quality as last basho. Room for improvement, but glad we have this stream...

I noticed that too. The wizard of sumo stream recording at work... :-)

The real test for the video quality will be in makuuchi anyway, the lower divisions were okay last time no matter how much they messed with the settings.

~530 kbit for the video track today, BTW.

I'm just watching the stream for the first time in a long time - and maybe it's just my feed or something about Ustream, but:

Where do all these ads come from? Totally missed the Tochiozan bout... How can I get the stream without stupid ads? (which run about 45 seconds every 10 minutes or so)...

Is this just on my feed? Or are other people seeing this too?

Anyone who isn't recording the action can just go to the Kyokai stream which has no adverts. I find this easier.

(Actually I do record the stream but I just connect it to my old DVD/hard disk recorder and watch it on the TV using time-slip)

I wish they'd settle on something. First day 360p, yesterday 240p, today back to 360p again.

Is there a way to change the size of the Kyokai stream's screen ? I can get it only very small or full screen...

What device/browser are you using, and which URL link?

I use Google Chrome and the URL is http://www.sumo.or.jp/en/index. Before I used VLC and it was great but I don't know how to use it now...

Go to the first post in this topic and use one of the three URL's suggested there.

Yes. One of your addresses has a better size for me. Thanks. But is it possible to use VLC (or WMP) ? When I put one of your addresses in "open network stream", it's not working...

Based on a suggestion made last basho (it was for recording, but can be adapted to viewing):

- download and install Livestreamer (current version 1.70, program homepage here)

- if I remember correctly, at the end of the installation it will ask you if you want to view the configuration file - if it doesn't, open an Explorer window and enter %appdata%\livestreamer into the folder bar, then open the file "livestreamerrc" in a text editor

- remove the # symbol from the line "#player="C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --file-caching=5000" or if you use the 64-bit version of VLC, remove it from "#player="C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --file-caching=5000" (adjust the path if you installed VLC to a different location than \VideoLAN\VLC\), then save the changed config file

- go to the folder where you installed Livestreamer and create a shortcut to livestreamer.exe

- right-click on the shortcut you created and go to Properties, then change the target field so it says "C:\Program Files (x86)\Livestreamer\livestreamer.exe" www.ustream.tv/channel/grand-sumo-tournaments best (again, adjust the path if Livestreamer was installed to a different location than \Livestreamer\), click OK to save the changed shortcut

Voilà, you should now have a shortcut that opens the NSK stream in VLC.

Thanks a lot :-)

Weird thing going today: The "worst" stream (240p) and the "best" one (live) are both 240p in resolution, but the supposedly worse one has the better bitrate.
