Yokozuna/Ozeki preperandum - Hatsu 2014

Recommended Posts

Kisenosato for his yokozuna run started keiko at the heya. Emphasizing the basics, like during the jungyo. “Returning to square one again, building a body that won't get injured.”
Having a young rikishi stand before him and doing suri-ashi according to his movements:

Harumafuji is uneasy about his right wrist, having it heavily taped. He did 12 bouts with Homarefuji and each time when clashing into him showed an expression of anguish. He'll likely will prepare for the basho elaborately taking care of the wrist.

Harumafuji' lend his chest in butsukari-geiko with Takarafuji, Homarefuji and Terunofuji.

His kanji to represent this year is 安, AN yasu, from relief, security (and Ama 安馬) - without big injury securing his yokozuna position, getting 2 yusho out of the 6.

Very long interview with Kisenosato at http://t2.pia.jp/interview/sp/kisenosato.jsp
Mentioned was an injury to his right ankle during his first yokozuna run.
Waking up without pain happens 3 days a year.
Which is your favourite place ? - The keiko ground, maybe?
What is your dream for the future ? - Rather than the future, I'm trying to spend each day with great care.

Kotooshu does 500 push-ups every day, ordered by the oyakata for prevention of another dislocation, to train the muscles around the shoulder. On the 18th during keiko there was still some pain. He mainly did the basics but also started light butsukari-geiko, little by little heading for recovery. Kotoshogiku is recovering well, but was in bad shape that day and rested.

A tsunauchi was carried out at Miyagino-beya yesterday, preparing Hakuho's tsuna for the upcoming basho.

Strands of hemp, waiting to be woven into a tsuna.

Surplus sections of the tsuna are cut into smaller pieces and given as a good luck charm to various connected people, heya supporters and koenkai members etc.

Harumafuji twisted his (always sore) left ankle during keiko on the 22nd, it swelled up. He will be there but may skip keiko at the keiko soken tomorrow.

Kisenosato was 12-5 with Takayasu. He has some minor problems with his lower back.

Kotoshogiku and Kotoōshū got into sweat doing keiko at the heya today, both did dumbbell training and then tachi-ai impact checking with the young ones, but they can't do proper sumo yet.

Why am I so scared one of the rikishi could hurt himself.

Honestly I’m more worried than I am excited / hoping they’d win.

Endo is participating? Endo? Really? I like the guy, I think he's skilled as all get-up and think he's got the talent to be great in sumo. But when I think "Strongest rikishi" he ain't in the top 10 by a mile. Not yet. Hell, he's not even top 20.

Did he had a choice? Think not :/

I like the fact that Baruto is participating.

The rikishi should watch some arm wrestling videos and learn some technique (if they haven't filmed the show already).

I don't usually partake in training coverage, but I just have to mention Tokyo Sports's report that Harumafuji's morning practice back on the 25th (first after the banzuke release) attracted exactly one reporter, namely that very Tospo guy writing about it. The other beat reporters - mostly following Kisenosato's every which move it appears - ended up not missing a whole lot as Haru's twisted ankle limited him to working out with weights for the most part on that day.

Hakuho finished keiko for a year with which he is content.
After scrupulously doing the basics, 20 with Daikiho and lending his chest to the young ones.

Hakuho plans to go to the new and closer Tagonoura-beya to complete his basho preparations by degeiko with Kisenosato.

Kisenosato only pauses on New Years day and continues keiko each day otherwise – the oyakata's idea. Yesterday he was 17-8 with Takayasu, losing 4 in a row once.
