Kanji of the year

Recommended Posts

Kanji of the year this time: - WA or RIN – as in Olympics: gorin - ring or circle:

a circle/group of persons in close relations, usually the Japanese people as a whole or from a region, becoming a WA to strive for a common goal or by sharing the same feelings:

to get/from getting the Olympics and Mt Fuji as world heritage and the RAKUten Eagels (team from the Tohoku disaster area) first yusho (they are the newest baseball team in the 2 top leagues):

RAKU (ease) and in e.g. tanoshimi (enjoyment, looking forward) was 2nd most popular kanji, BAI from bai-gaeshi (one phrase of the year) was 3rd with 7623 votes.

Determined with a poll by the Japan Kanji Ability Certification Association: 170 290 entries this year, 9518 selected WA. As always (started in 1995) it was written at the Kiyomizu-temple in Kyoto by the chief abbot on the “Kanji Day”, Dec. 12th.

Usually many people are asked to write/name one kanji to represent their year, prime minister Abe has dream (coming true: Tokyo Olympics), the kanji Hakuho and Kisenosato especially like.

Endo selected 縁, EN (not his from Endo), connection, destiny.

3rd was sen, fight, battle, with 4556.
As always (started in 1995) it was written at the Kiyomizu-temple in Kyoto by the chief abbot.

This year the most boring choice again, kin/kane, gold and money for the 3rd time after 2000 and 2012 - Olympic years - and money rules. http://www.kanken.or.jp/kanji2016/

Phrases of the year look boring as well, a baseball winner: http://singo.jiyu.co.jp/detail.html#prize01

The 30 nominations: http://gigazine.net/news/20161117-word-of-the-year/

Best dictionary new words of the year look more interesting: http://dictionary.sanseido-publ.co.jp/topic/shingo2016/2016Best10.html

Sanseido picked hobo-hobo as the one: hobo means nearly and hobo-hobo is even closer to 100%.

I expect rikishi's kanji of the year reports start after the Nikkan ozumo awards are complete.

Same procedure as every year:

It's not a huge surprise. There are only so many ways (in general) to write 金 in cursive, and the shogi pieces have to have different calligraphy for the same 金 in order to differentiate the corresponding unpromoted piece. The last one (2021) was closer to nari-gin
