torquato 1,075 Posted January 11, 2014 The switch to a graphic showing the 08:45 AM start time is also very encouraging. True. Should be a later time if sticking around from end of last tournament. However, the description 'November tournament' is still there... And when I last checked the embedded video was gone on the NSK site... It's like last time when they switched the stream services over to ustream. No information whatsoever of what is going to be planed... That's annoying, even more so if someone want's to earn money whith it... Well, we only can wait and see what's going to happen... Cross fingers...

Asashosakari 18,974 Posted January 11, 2014 I wonder what the time-delayed viewing option will be like. If they simply slap the full 10-hour recording on there it'll be next to useless as it's impossible to seek to specific matches or rewind by only a few seconds on a file like that. I certainly don't think it's worth $10/day anyway, but I can see a bunch of people who thought it would be worth it ending up rather disappointed.

Gernobono 463 Posted January 11, 2014 http://www.sumo.or.jp/en/kyokai/information?id=26 what bothers me most: "At the same time, the Internet streaming services we had previously offered for free are now only available through purchase." hope they do not mean what they are saying

Looks like I'll be making more use of Jason's channel after all.
Kaioshoryu 62 Posted January 11, 2014 Wow. What a terrible bussiness move by the NSK. Instead of helping to spread the word of sumo outside Japan, they seek to limit the possibilities for foreigners viewing.
Asojima 2,873 Posted January 11, 2014 Bad sign. The embedded placeholder for the stream on the Japanese version of the NSK site has been removed and replaced with a pointer to the pay-per-view notice.
Bugman 384 Posted January 11, 2014 Bad sign indeed. :-( I suppose i could look at it in this way, i've watched Sumo for the best part of two years for free, and thats something to be grateful for, nothing lasts for ever, neither good nor bad. I'l read up as much as i can, i won't lose my interest.
kuroimori 1,634 Posted January 11, 2014 Wow. What a terrible bussiness move by the NSK. Instead ofwhereing to spread the word outside Japan, they seek to limit the possibilities for foreigners viewing. The NSK obviously give a sh*t about the foreign sumo followers. Terrible English on the new website "Have you ever seen the Sumo?", etc. makes me think that they just think it is just a tourist attractions for foreigners. It seems even a boycott of the PPV system will have any effect, because the NSK will have some revenue after Jatsu 2014 where there was none before. I was thinking about a purchase when I realized - bad english once again - that "seasonal" does not mean the whole season of 6 tournaments but just one! Greedy chubby jerks!
torquato 1,075 Posted January 11, 2014 Terrible English on the new website "Have you ever seen the Sumo?", etc. I found the 'servise' actually quite funny... Nothing new with the NSK... They have now changed and expanded the text. It now clearly says: "At the same time, the Internet streaming services we had previously offered for free are now only available through purchase." Well, folks that was it for me.
Andonishiki 169 Posted January 11, 2014 the magic wand to solve this could be ..... a proxy ISP address.... not sure, if this is really possible and if it should be discussed in an open forum though.
ALAKTORN 346 Posted January 11, 2014 “Video Viewing Period The videos will be available for viewing until the day before the next tournament begins. (Example: Videos of the 2014 January Grand Sumo Tournament will be available for viewing until the day before the 2014 March Grand Sumo Tournament begins, or until March 8, 2014)” This is also terrible. They won’t be doing any real archiviation.
Asashosakari 18,974 Posted January 11, 2014 I was thinking about a purchase when I realized - bad english once again - that "seasonal" does not mean the whole season of 6 tournaments but just one! That was my first thought, too. $120 for a full year would be something I'd seriously consider (I've paid as much for a season of MLB.tv before and didn't regret it), but for a single basho it's just not worth thinking about at all. Smacks of "we just want to cover costs, and we might have a better chance finding a few suckers who'll pay through the nose than getting a large customer base at a more reasonable price". Kaioshoryu 62 Posted January 11, 2014 So it's 120 $ to watch a single basho, and if you want to watch all days of all basho in a year it's 720 dollars?? 720?? That is just totally ridiculous.
Andonishiki 169 Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) I wonder what NSK will do if almost noone pays for this service... but if they receive hundreds of angry/disppointed letters from abroad, talking about a sharp decline of Sumofans ? Those people are not going to visit a basho anymore when they visit Japan next time. I guess quite a lot of foreign sumo fans travel to Japan quite frequently and spend quite a bit of money while visiting Sumo... unfortunately my 4 years working for Mitsubishi in Tokyo told me one thing.... most Japanese managers don`t give a flying f... about anywhere outside Japan. Only if it really hurts their wallets, they are forced to care. Edited January 11, 2014 by Andonishiki

I agree, apart from the fact that they are shooting themselves in the foot with this, the price is preposterous. All that money just for the single camera / no replay / no commentary / no info cards internet stream??? That's more than you need to pay to watch every single Champions League match in full HD TV coverage...

There will be some revenue now compared to zero when the stream was free. Now the only option is to protest against either the paywall itself or the outragious pricing scheme. Uriahnate 1 Posted January 11, 2014 Man this sucks .You know they would make more $$ off us if they had a better way of selling merchandise like shirts and banzuke posters or whatever .I would love an official shirt with Kisenosato handprint . I don't know but I got the feeling that isnt something the JSA does , or does well .

Not legal but legit.not at these horrendous rates, then it would be better to try this with the NHK / BS coverage.Hell, I am even considering to get myself another JSTV trial subscription to at least get the NHK Makuuchi broadcast. Asashosakari 18,974 Posted January 11, 2014 the difference is that the japanese fans still have nhkThat's why I wrote "hardcore fans", the ones who watch the lower divisions. But sure, it hits the non-Japanese fans even harder since we can't even watch the top ranks for free (or inexpensive) now.
