The Hanada Bros. managed quite well with all that hype.

Au contraire, the family pretty well fell apart, especially as Takanohana despised his elder brother and fell more and more under the influence of a guru of sorts; and the father, ex-Ozeki Takanohana, complained bitterly that much of the hype, far from bringing in the money, was merely creating problems -- the road outside the heya was thronged every morning with young girls who just stood there, waiting to glimpse their idols, and maybe get to talk with them -- but never buying sumo tickets and actually supporting sumo (I paraphrase but that was the gist).

I changed the topic title to get rid of the notification error.

Endo from a painter of his home town got an India-ink painting of a dragon (ryu) he had desired, returning a signed coloured paper. The oyakata being from the same town got for the heya a painting of the Chinese deity Zhong Kui for keeping away evil spirits (surely those causing Endo to get injured).

Asashoryu being the one with special impact for his decision to devote himself to sumo, a shikona with ryu seems to be most likely for Endo. Sho (different kanji) for the heya and oyakata (Daishoyama), but Daishoryu already is in the heya: a different first kanji with connection to home or his real name or what? He strives to become like Wajima, but kanji from that name won't fit easily. I think Takashoryu would be best.

Just out of curiosity, would it be syntactically possible to take the 石 ishi from Ishikawa and combine it into an Isshoryu-type shikona pronunciation?

Endo's daily rhythm is disturbed by too much extra events. He can't get the 2-3 hours nap after chanko when asa-geiko is finished. They are common for rikishi – and part of training. Endo (like many Japanese) sleeps in the train and tries to go to bed earlier.

Actually, the average number of wins for a rikishi making his debut at M3 or above for the past ten years has been 5,38 (5,84 if you only count rikishi who fought a complete 15 days). A total of 39% of those rikishi managed to get 6 wins or more.

So an expectation of 6 wins sounds right about average for him even if he's not Komusubi. I think the REAL expectations Kitanoumi has for him are actually much higher than that, they are just trying to not put too much pressure on him.

P.S. On the other hand, the numbers for people making their Komusubi debut are not that different, 5,53 average wins (5,70 out of those who didn't drop out) and a 46% who got 6 wins.

Reasonable expectations for Endo's first basho in j'oi really depend upon what type of rikishi one anticipates he'll be. As Krindel points out, the average of 5.38 wins for the first time in the top ranks means little, as that includes lots of rikishi with limited upper potential, and most of us don't view Endo in this light. For the most recent top ranked rikishi, their first basho in the sanyaku or j'oi went as follows:

All three of the most recent yokozuna, Asashoryu (K1), Hakuho (M3), and Harumafuji (a/k/a Ama)(M2) went 8-7.

For the most recent ozeki, Kaio (M1), Tochiazuma (K2), Kotooshu (M4), and Kotoshogiku (M3) went 9-6.

Chiyotaiki (M1) and Kisenosato (M1) went 8-7.

Three recent ozeki failed to kk on their first time in the top: Kakuryu (M2) 7-8; Baruto (M1) 5-10; and Chiyotaikai (M1) 4-11.

So, while admittedly this is a limited survey, 9 out of the last 12 ozeki got a kk the first time they faced the top of the banzuke. Therefore, I'd say the real expectations for Endo are 8 wins, not 6.

Endo is finishing his 5th basho in Makuuchi. He'll have 2 KK (at M13 (9 wins, withdrew) and at M10 (11 wins, with a sansho)) and 3 MK. His MK are 6 wins (M7), 6 wins (M1), and he's currently at 5 wins at M4 with 2 matches to go.

Still young and brash, with much to learn (only in Juryo for 1 basho, and at J13 at that) - but will Endo-mania begin to wane if he doesn't do something the next time he's ranked the upper half of the maegashira (next basho?)?
