Ashikawazu 43 Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) Hi All! I've been asked to create a new topic for 2014 spilling over from The Wall 2013 to keep the threads separate. As requested: Hatsu 2014 Isiura, Onosho, and Fukuyamato (previously known as Kimishima), have all increased their streaks to 6 consecutive KK's. 3 members hit the wall this basho: Kotoseigo, Takei, and Kakehashi. And Horikiri gets special mention for picking up the Sandame Yusho. Congrats mate! Ichinojo, (the collegiate champ entry last basho) is looking strong, and already secured his KK, (and maybe a Juryo showing next basho? Another win should do it for sure). Koike at the lower levels of Sandame, has also had a good start at 4-1, and will still be a contender in the May basho. Everybody else still in reach for their KK's. (Except Yasui, who unspectacularly hit the wall in his 2nd Basho.) * Also worth mentioning that Koba and Onosho are matched up tomorrow. After Day 11: Ishiura, after a 0-3 start has rallied to 3-3 and still can achieve his KK with a win in his final matchup. Ichinojo, had a good win on day 11 against Ms1w Sakigake , to improve to 5-1, and unless there are some crazy banzuke happenings; will become a sekitori in his 3rd basho. Congrats mate! Onosho won his matchup against fellow wall member Koba, on day 10. And again on day 11 vs Ms23w Sasanoyama, to be the fourth member this basho to get his KK. Down in Jonidan, Yonamine has picked up wins on days 10 and 11 as well to secure his KK, and a place on the table next basho. Ashikawazu 43 Posted March 21, 2014 After Day 13: A bit of activity over the past couple days. Hirikiri had consecutive losses on days 12 and 13, and unfortunately hit the wall. Koba had a win on day 12, to move to 3-3, but took a loss on day 13 and also hit the wall after 5 KK basho. Fukuyamoto lost on day 12, but picked up his 4th win on day 13th to eek by with a KK. Onosho and Ichinojo both picked up more wins as well, to finalize their basho's with 5-2 and 6-1 records respectively. Ichinojo will definitely by in Juryo next basho. Ishiura remains the ultimate rikishi who's wall-fate is yet undetermined. Tomorrow he faces Mongolian Ms9e Sensho , who also 3-3 and will be fighting for his KK.
Ashikawazu 43 Posted March 24, 2014 After Day 15: Ishiura picked up a 4th win on day 14 to secure his KK, and along with Onosho and Fukuyamoto, increase his streak to 7 straight KK's. Koikie and Yonamine both lost on day 14, but had already secured their KK's to finalize with 4-3 records. Stay tuned for the Natsu 2014 Wall Edition!

Ashikawazu 43 Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) Musashikuni should be on this list. He has still not had a MK and he was on your list for his first two tournaments. :-) http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=12098 Thanks for the spot!!! I'm not sure how he fell off the list. Must have been an accidental drop when I transferred the table. Updated. Not sure how I could have missed Musashimaru's nephew! (Blushing...) (I dunno...) Ashikawazu 43 Posted May 20, 2014 (edited) After the half-way point at Natsu: Ichinojo is looking like the real deal; having secured his KK on day 10, with a strong showing in Juryo. As for the wall veterans: Onosho has secured his KK in upper Makushita. Ishiura has lost his first three bouts against the top ranked Makushita rikishi, he's bounced back with 2 wins, but faces J12e Sakigake 3-7 tomorrow. He'll need to gambarize to avoid the wall. So far our only member to hit the wall has been Fukuyamato 0-5, who eeked his way along to a respectable run of 7 KK's, but top Sandame ranks proved too much for him. Musashikuni is also doing well, at 3-2 looks like he should avoid the wall for at least another basho. Koike needs to win his remaining matches to avoid the wall.. here's hoping for him. Yonamine changed his Shikona to Shingaku, and it doesn't seem to have affected him too poorly, as he is currently 3-2, and needing just another win for his KK. As for our new wall members: Abiko, Miyauchi, Mizuta and Kotaro also have obtained quick KK's down in Jonidan. Kawabata is also doing well. At 3-2, but with a loss against former sanyaku Ms6w Tochinoshin, who is undefeated 12-0 since his return from injury and subsequent drop to Ms55. Everybody else is either 2-3 or 3-2, so all still have chances of avoiding the wall. Natsu wrap up: Ishiura, one of the longest members, found upper Makushita too tough, and finally hit the wall after 7 KK's from his debut. I think he is still somebody to watch in the future. He reminds me in a way of Ama due to size and style. Fukuyamato likewise hit the wall at Natsu in the upper Sandame ranks, after his 7KK run as well. Onosho finished strong, and will be our longest member for the upcoming basho. Koike pulled together another last minute KK winning his last 3 bouts, to secure his place next basho. Musashikuni after a 1-2 start, won all his remaining matches for a final 5-2 record, and a 5th consecutive KK. He's young but look strong.. with the proper tutelage from his uncle, he may go far. One to keep an eye out for. Ichinojo finished his basho rather nicely, taking the Juryo yusho with a 11-4 record in only his 3rd basho. Another rikishi not to take your eye off of. The shikona change for Shingaku didn't seem to pay out, and he lost his last two bouts and hit the wall with a 3-4 record. Abiko remained dominant at the lower ranks, securing his second KK and his second straight zensho yusho (can the term be applied to the lower divisions?). Miyauchi and Mizuta both at his heels with 6-1 records and their 2nd KK's. Kawabata, Narumi, Kotaro, Nakao, and Takoa all secured KK's as well to extend their streaks to 2 KK's. While Yamana and Seito both hit the wall with 3-4 records. However, with his favorite record of 4-3 he is absolutely crawling up the banzuke. Hopefully he can pick up one more win and hope to break into the paid ranks... Ichonojo is now an 'ace' but it really pales in comparison to what he's been able to do to the sekitori. Yes, he can't henka forever but he is clearly legitimate and the number of KK he can get is open ended honestly. The most likely way he'll run into the wall is the worst case: injury. Let's hope that doesn't happen. Kawabata found the Juryo crunch to be slightly too much. He'll get to try again next basho though, nobody will be surprised if this graduate of the wall makes it. Abiko has sort of kinda answered critics, pulling zenyusho from deep in Makushita. In winter, he gets to experience the Juryo crunch where he will no longer be peer-less. Either way the safe bet is he'll KK again and look to get into Juryo. Mizuta continues with an impressive .800+ average, it'll be good to see him in Makushita (hopefuly) Kotaro, like Mizuta is another one to watch, but was The Wall-gai last time due to a sleepy writer. Narumi has not had the success of the previous two, Onosho style, and is about to fall a division behind them Nagao is from my favorite ken, Gifu. Shiba, who is excellent, lost out on the Sadanme Yusho. Shodai has an almost identical record to Shiba, but is way down the Banzuke comparatively. Is this the different between Nihon U and Tokyo U of Agriculture? Truly, discrimination in Sumo knows no bounds ;) Shonannoumi welcome to Sandanme! Please get a slightly shorter Shikona! Shuji, full name Shuji Shuji. Takagi is another powerhouse, depriving us of the mega 6-1 playoff in Sandanme with other Wall participants. Congrats! Tamakongo found Sandanme a little tougher than the depths of Jonidan, but still passed by this time. Tagonofuji - the Wall waits for you... And let's welcome the fresh guys who can find the door in the wall: Ishii, Sakdahikari - from Mongolia, Takaguchi, Takumi, Takinoumi Enjoy your stay! Tak, Tak Tak..... One more change going forward: It'll take two basho to get on the wall. I don't want to spend time including every college graduate who can beat up on underweight high school students. Onosho came out on top, handing Abiko his 2nd ever loss! I'm not sure if video of this exists, it'd be nice to include here. The rest of the squad has split their bouts about 50/50, not an auspicious start by any means. One interesting point to watch is the glut of rikishi who were thrown up into the gut of Makushita with good records last basho. Asashosakari 18,998 Posted November 11, 2014 I believe Takagi's rank needs some further adjustment. :-)
Sumozumo 240 Posted November 12, 2014 Yes! Quite so. I've also tried to make the order a little bit more sane. By the way, here is the Onosho-Abiko fight. Abiko is no push over but things get a bit tricky at the end, its a good watch! http://www.youtube.com/embed/rLF0fDuZNHo?autoplay=

Of course anything can happen, but if the right things happen he can get in even with a 4-3. Abiko on the other hand, looked completely helpless against Keitenkai, so I'm doubtful right now. Takagi lost against Chiyosakae going for his KK, Chiyosakae having an uncharacteristically good basho. Shiba also came out on the wrong side of another undefeated matchup, to Tochimaru. Takagi and Shiba are both from Kise so unfortunately we won't be able to see them rumble. Nagao is our first rikishi in a lot of trouble, dropping matches against Sandanme lifers, including Genkaiho who has had 4 shikona changes (why?). Sadahikari had the misfortune of coming up against well known Ryuden in Jonidan to spoil his first KK chance. Somewhat surprisingly none of our players could come up with a 4-0 KK, so we probably won't be seeing any Yushos this time unless something substantially crazy happens. Also, it looks like the only candidate for addition to the wall is Otsukawa who is 2-2 now. If my query skills are terrible and someone has slipped through, let me know.
Sumozumo 240 Posted November 19, 2014 A quick update here: Onosho secured his 11th straight KK with a win over Ms1w Akiseyama. He's getting press now for his nearly certain Juryo debut next basho. Hopefully he can push for 6 wins, which he hasn't had since only his 3rd basho... Mizuta and Takagi round out our Makushita competitors who have been able to come to a 4-1 KK. So far, nobody in Sandanme has been able to reach 4 wins. Ishii has faced two rikishi from Sandanme but still has his KK at 4-1. Our lone loser is Tagonofuji with a 1-4 record. If he is truly 103kg like the db states, then its not really a wonder why.

Onosho has now broken into the paid ranks after very slowly KK'ing his way up the banzuke. I'm willing to bet 11 basho is the slowest to Juryo while still never MK'ing, but I'm hoping someone else will do the query and prove me wrong. Ichinojo may not be able to indefinitely KK but he's held on for at least one basho. Now we have two Wall wrestlers in the paid ranks which is quite rare indeed! Abiko somewhat surprisingly missed and will drop probably out of contentions for a Juryo spot next basho. Kotaro, Mizumi, and Narumi all have achieved 'ace' status! Senkoho 552 Posted December 29, 2014 (edited) two even more impressive examples, albeit from another era: Takanohana - 16 kk before Juryo Futagodake - 2kk + 1 kyujo + 19(!) kk before Juryo Edited December 29, 2014 by Senkoho
Asashosakari 18,998 Posted December 29, 2014 (edited) Senkoho has already covered the big 3 cases, so just padding it out with a few more from the 8-bout era: Sadanoyama - 17 KK + 4 4-4 Tatsumusashi - 12 KK + 3 4-4 Wakachichibu - 12 KK + 2 4-4 Wakamisugi - 12 KK + 1 4-4 Iwakaze - 8 KK + 3 4-4 Sadanoyama should have the longest run with continual gain in rank, at 23 tournaments (those 21 + 2 more KK in juryo) Edited December 29, 2014 by Asashosakari
